This morning was kinda different, because the trainer wasn't there, so we had to make our own class. Sometimes he has the men and women do different exercises, so I asked to try the "lunge and butt" stuff that the ladies do (while the men are usually blasting the upper body). So we did three sets of this:
  • "Circle lunges" - doing lunges front, front angle, side, back angle and back (right leg), then back, back angle, side, front angle, front (left leg). Work your way from one rep to five reps (five mini sets)
  • Backward leg extensions
  • Backward straight leg raises
  • Backward leg "pulses"
The last three are all on your knees and work the glutes. Fifteen reps for each exercise.

Then we did three sets of three ab exercises, 10 reps each: V-Ups, Toe touchers and bicycles.

I feel like a got a good workout and it was something that I hadn't done before, so that was good. Also, the circle lunges: HOLY SHITE. Those are KILLER.

You do now.  And I could introduce you to, oh, I dunno, 250 people at my gym (including me), who work out every single day, quite intensely I might add, all while watching that little TV on the treadmill.

Most people don't know what true intensity is.  It isn't something that can be explained very well.  It needs to be experienced.  True intensity makes your body and mind feel so overwhelmingly uncomfortable that it's only natural that most people don't want to go into that zone.  It's a dark and scary place!  So when you say that 250 people are working intensely while wathing TV, that just tells me that those people are in the majority of those who don't know what intensity is.

Come on over to the WOD-January thread.  When you look at those workouts it is of primary importance that you realize that most of them are done with a stopwatch.  If I was coaching you through those workouts I wouldn't expect you to be able to go straight through without a rest.  I would let you rest.  But I would let you rest 5 or 10 seconds at the most.  Your body would feel like shit and you'd be sucking wind and I would say, "Go!"  You would not feel ready to go, but you would do it anyway.  There is a puke bucket in the corner and it's taunting you, but you keep plugging away.  In the end you would just lay down on the floor for a couple minutes because that's all your body has left.  After a few sessions like that you would begin to understand intensity.  And if you were a willing enough self-motivator with the requisite masochistic streak, you would be able to maintain that level of intensity without further coaching.

How many of those 250 people are yelling and grunting on the treadmill?  How many of them finish their session and just lay down on the floor?  None.  I know.  I've seen the treadmill crowd at many gyms for many years.  I know exactly what they are all about.

OK, never mind, no one works out as hard as you.  Have a nice day.

I would not suggest that I am doing high intensity most of the time

I do a lot of work at Threshold, but that is not the same thing

heh heh...Quitter!  Typical of someone who thinks they know intensity...
No, but seriously.  You're being melodramatic.  Anyone reading this stuff can clearly see that I never made such a claim.  My claims were pretty specific.

I have an uncommonly lengthy fitness and athletic resume for someone who was never a pro at anything.  Sparing you my resume I'll just say that I have learned and experienced, and observed, a lot over the years.

Is it impossible to have true intensity while looking at the glowing box?  No, I suppose it isn't impossible.  Improbable, yes.  I stand behind my previous claims that most people do not know what true intensity is.  They've never been pushed that hard, or had a reason to push themselves that hard.  And they've never learned how to push that hard.  And perhaps most significant, most people don't have the specific mental fortitude to push that hard.  *Not to mention the physical preparedness and genetics to recover well.  Maybe once or twice a trainer will push them beyond anything they've ever experienced, and it will leave an impression on them, and they may not want to  explore that zone again.

*The physical preparedness and genetics plays a big role.  If someone pushed way beyond their comfort zone and they have a hard time recovering, they are less likely to try it again.
.
SO...KirksNoseHair... I detect that you think I sounded arrogant and condescending in my messages.  (I'm so perceptive!)  Well, I suppose I probably did.  I do tend to be that way.  But I don't mean any ill will.  I talk a little smack in person with my friends as well.  But I'm old enough to know better, i.e. I'd better be able to back up my smack most of the time!  And I can.  And I do.  And if we were close, geographically, I would gladly train with you for a few sessions.  It would be good for both of us.    Kirk, do you have a comfortable income?  If so, I can probably recommend a new gym for you that is different than anything you've done before.  It's more expensive than other gyms, but you will get the best, most stimulating, most interesting, most intense workouts you've ever had.  I qualify it with a probably because I don't know where you live.  But if you give me a city or a zip code I'd be happy to send you some linkage.  If nothing else you can just look at the linky out of morbid curiosity.

I heart Mudguts - fabulous reading! I think you have a flair for the dramatic as well! Of course this does not mean that I do not also heart KNH - because I do. But as I've expressed in this thread, MudGuts' opinions on intensity are something that hits home with me, based on recent personal experience. This is also NOT to say that I claim to be in the level of shape he does - very far from it, actually. OK, anyway...

MudGuts: I live in the Chicago area. Please send the link to this gym alternative you speak of. PM is fine. Thanks!

I have an extremely comfortable income (more comfortable than most) and chronic Hepatitis C.  I have nothing to prove to anyone.  I'm pushing 50 years old and I'll be lucky to live to to be 60 with my disease.  Bottom line, I'm very sick.

I was once a champion power lifter and held the dead lift record in the 198lb weight class for a short while.  I know plenty about working out, I don't need any help or advice in that area, all I'm trying to do now is outlive my mother so I can support her until she dies.

I exercise under the extremely close supervision of my doctors.

You go on with your bad self, man.  It's all good.  When I was a young, healthy man, I was just as gung-ho as you are.  But times have changed for me.   I'm not the droid you're looking for.

Yeah, candidly speaking I really am pretty badass for a 41-year-old.  I routinely embarrass guys that are 10 even 20 years younger than me.  But I've never been a champion power lifter, so YOU go on with YOUR bad self, MAN!

P90X has arrived!!! Time to read the fitness and nutrition manuals, watch a couple of workouts to start mentally getting my mind wrapped around this thing and prepare for monday. BRING THE PAIN!!! I'm so ready to do this!

Did not work out today, will be tomorrow and take Sunday off and then come Monday, it's P90X for at least the next 90 days then re-evaluate at the end of that. If it does what everyone has told me it does, then I'm sure I'll repeat it a couple of times until I do something else.

I did plan on working out today but I sprained my ankle this morning, ugh it freaking hurt.
BRING IT!!!

Good 40 minute elliptical session this morning. My quads were pretty blown from those lunges yesterday, so I took it easy at first, but ended up at a decent cardio level (level 8). I didn't do any intervals as I hadn't done a straight cardio workout for a while. I'll do more intervals next week. I'll take tomorrow off (and sleep in!) and get back at it with my training class on Monday. There will be some diet challenges later today as we have a couple parties to go to, but I plan to weather the storm!

aredore, definately let us know how the p90x treats you. would actually love to try it myself, but i cant afford to buy the dvd's, and cant find the exercises on the internet, but if its really all that worth it, i might get it in the future, or 'find' it at least.

I've talked to a few friends that did it and said it's worth it. 2 things that really sold me on it...

1. They showed a guy that has done it 3 times. 1 time = 90 days, so 270 days basically. But they showed him where he started at 275 lbs (I weight a bit more than that at the moment) but they showed him at 90, 180 and 270 day intervals. It blew me away. Yes I know it's an infomerical but I'm buying in to the pics I saw.

2. I actually asked a couple of trainers and they said quietly to me that they've heard nothing but positive things and that it was the real deal.

Of course the key to it is changing your eating habits as with any lifestyle change.

I spent a couple of hours yesterday figuring out my new eating plan because working out is not really a problem for me once I commit fully to something. I just have the problem of 8-9 months down the road hitting a wall. But that has always been because of lack of support from others. But I have to find a way to not let that beat me. That's why I failed in 2009, I did great for like 8 months and then I just fell flat on my face basically. I was down 30 something lbs and of course like the stories go, I put it all back on plus some.

I did something I've never done before this time though. I actually wrote down my goals on a piece of paper and I'm going to put it up somewhere that I can see it all the time. Somewhere that I see it everyday, so either at my desk at work or in the room where I'm doing P90X everyday, or maybe both.

One of the things in the P90X dvd you're supposed to watch before you start the program is they talk about and show during the workouts that between every set, there is a water break and write down your reps. They give you a sheet and encourage you to write down each set of reps at every short break. I'm buying into everything they say on this program and I'm going full force for the next 90 days, starting tomorrow. So we'll see what happens.

Trust me, I'll be updating here very often to keep everyone updated on it all because I know several people have told me they really want to know if it's worth it.

2010 is the year I will BRING IT damnit :)

So out of curiosity and since I'm starting the p90x tomorrow, I went ahead and did the X-Stretch today (it's an every sunday thing) ... wow even the stretch is intense to me. Because I'm a big guy currently and I am not as limber as one would want to be. But either way, I did all 52:27 of it and as close to form as possible.

Tomorrow the real pain begins! heh

Total body training class this morning, with no cardio at all, so I survived without the threat of regurgitation. We did chest, back, shoulders, legs and abs. We also did bicep and tricep supersets between all exercises except for abs. Pretty good burn, but I feel like I didn't go quite hard enough.

I'm going to do the elliptical with intervals again tomorrow. The soreness in my quads is almost gone.

My Story...

I'll preface this by saying I'm about 5'8".  I was around 148 and did a several month long "bulk".  Got up to around 180.  Since then I've lost about 20 lbs slowly.  A week ago I started a cut that will hopefully get me to around 145 and around 10% BF I'm hoping.

I'm on a carb cycling diet.  I basically get all my carbs in my first two meals of the day and then cut them out the rest of the day eating only fats and protein.  I do get protein with my carb meals as well.  I have two "refueling" days of the week where I eat carbs with every meal.  I do weight workouts 4 times a week and do 20-30 minutes of PWO cardio after.  I also have 2 HIIT sessions a week.  LET'S GO!!!

Oh yea, I only eat very low GI carbs such as oatmeal, brown rice, and quinoa.  I generally get my fats from stuff like almonds, avocado, and olive oil.

Well, I didn't hit my goal in 2009, but I did loose a shit-load of weight.

Got 15 more pounds to loose to hit my goal, then maintain.

And, no MudGuts! I'm not looking to be He-man! LMAO! I'm just looking to be toned and fit. nothing more.

P90X Day 2 - PLYOMETRICS.

Ugh!!! That is super freaking intense. Probably the most intense workout I've *ever* done in my entire life. You want to know how good or bad of shape you're in? Heh, find someone who has that disc and go through it, 58 mins of pure cardio, whew!!!

Of course I have to still modify a few of the moves but I burned 759 calories with an avg heartbeat of 138 and a max of 160.

KirksNoseHair

580 Squat
295 Bench Press

Interesting numbers.  You were all legs and core.

Yeah, I have a strong back and legs, my bench was always a bit weak, and it prevented me from winning a lot of events.  Don't forget, this stuff is with a full suit and wraps, and we're talking 10+ years ago, long before I got sick.  I couldn't touch anything like that now.

When I do benches these days I'm doing sets of 8 reps with 205lbs, I don't do swats or dead lifts any more, except for stiff-leg dead lifts (with very light weight) for hamstrings.

These days I'm focused more on cardio, especially now, since I'll be going on some fairly challenging hikes in the rockies in June.  We're climbing at least one 14,000 peak, maybe two.

I went to renew my gym membership for the university gym a couple of days ago. I haven't been back since because I've been burdened with an assignment in for the end of this week. I might find some time later this evening to go, but I'm not really looking forward to it as I haven't been in a month.

Wish me luck.

Had to skip the workout yesterday for work related reasons, but was back in training class this morning. A nice change of pace with a serious blast to the chest and back. I still wish we'd get some more cardio in there, though, just to push the intensity up a bit. I'm on the elliptical tomorrow morning, doing the aforementioned intervals.

I lost a few pounds this week, so things are again moving in the right direction on that front. I have set some pretty aggressive goals for the first half of the year. I'd like to lose about two pounds a week, which would get me in my target weight neighborhood by mid-July or so. I've resolved to cut a few things completely out of the diet, namely alcohol and processed/refined carbs. I'm excited about the goals as I usually suck at goal setting, and these have me very motivated to achieve them. As aredore said, it's time to BRING IT!

The trouble is that we now have had nearly 12 inches in the last week and it is not clearing

We are not used to snow so the infastructure is failing

The country is running out of grit so whilst some of the main roads are passable, all the side roads just have packed ice on them and are very dangerous

I rejoined "Gold's" gym on Saturday, at a new location, and got a great deal.  $25 per month and I can bring my wife in on weekends for free (she digs yoga) plus, when I travel, I can get into any one of over 25,000 Gold's Gyms nationwide.

The one I joined is brand-spanking new, all new equipment, big huge swimming pool, massive free weights area, every machine you can think of and the bonus is it's about a mile from my house.  Nice.

That's an awesome deal.  I remember when I belonged to Golds I was paying $52 a month.  Now I'm happy with my $19.99 a month black card for Planet Fitness.  Although I might just get it changed to a regular membership for $10 a month as I don't really have a need for the black card benefits.

Yeah, Golds had 3 deals, one for $10 a month, one for $19 and one for $25.  The $10 was not worth it due to the restrictions, the $19 forced you to lock in for a year (with my illness, I may end up having to quit if I get sick again and don't want to pay for something I'm not using) and the $25 allowed me to quit when I want, plus go to any Golds, anywhere in the country, any time.  That sealed the deal for me.

Just finished Day 3 this morning and I'm feeling very sore from yesterdays Plyo X. Man that work out is KILLER!!! This morning was Shoulders, Biceps and Triceps.

Tomorrow is 92 mins of Yoga. I have a small idea of what I'm in for and yet I don't. Should be interesting for sure!

Oh and yes I've been eating very healthy and sticking to the plan as close as possible. Will be interesting to see my weight this Monday when I weigh in, I'm weighing myself weekly.

I just spent all of '09 losing wight and I lost 80 pounds. The thing to do is think of it as a lifestyle change and not a diet. What helps burning fat is speeding up the metabolism and I did this by going for a walk before I ate a meal. Its best to walk at least a half an hour a day. The first week is always the hardest and if you can get through that it just gets easier.

I hope that helps anyone  :)
and good luck

FlashFire, that's amazing! Congrats!!

Chiming in here after a couple times in 2009. I did really well that year, lost 20 pounds just by walking, jogging and light weight lifting along with eating right. But I fell off the wagon for a few months and now I've gained about 15 back. So like a few people here, I'm restarting. Eating has been solid for two weeks, walking everywhere, and going to start into jogging and weights again tommorow. Just sucks in the FREAKING COLD Canadian weather. Damn you Canada. I'm around 210 and would ideally be around 180.

So yeah, I'm forcing myself to join the club of posting what I've done here every day. Keeping a personal journal too, but the internet is nice for having people judge me if I fail. So yeah, if you guys want, be pals and yell derogatory comments at me if I don't post on a given day. Looking forward to it!

Just completed Day 4 of the P90X - Yoga 92 mins, ugh. I don't think I did a single move correct but Yoga is really interesting and I feel fairly relaxed too, which you're supposed to from what I have heard.

Intervals today were good; a nice challenge. I did the same as last time: 10 minutes at a good pace, 20 minutes of intervals (30 sec on/90 sec off) and 10 minutes at pace to finish up. That last 10 minutes is harder than it sounds! At least I had some Opeth in my ears to help me grind through it!

My chest and arms are pretty sore from yesterday's training class, so that's a good thing! Diet is going pretty well also. Just have to stay consistent!

As long as others are sharing numbers, I might as well too. I'm currently at 295 and want to get in the 240-250 range this year. Hopefully this will happen by mid year and I can assess where I'm at overall, as I still don't know what my ideal weight should be. I'm a bigger guy overall, so I won't be anywhere near the BMI level (215 or something silly like that - I'm 6'2"). I've set monthly goals to get me to 250 by mid July. Let's do it!

Hell yeah, I just joined that earlier this month as well...  I moved up to the Northern part of Manhattan and didn't have a gym for two months until I heard about that place.  It's certainly no frills, but it provides everything you need for super cheap.

Also, I know this is sort of odd, but if all of you who are posting in this thread took it upon yourselves to take a picture of your physique each day and post it in here, many of you would stay more motivated, and motivate others, each day to get that exercise in.   Accountability is one thing that really gets people going with weight loss.  I hope all of you meet, and exceed, your goals for 2010 and keep the weight off for years to come!

If you really want one, I can attach it... But I'm not needing to lose weight my friend, i'm 6'0" 171 pounds about 7% body fat.

What I was suggesting was something that has been shown to help people in the past.  If people on the forum want to get a group together and set up a private account to share, that would work also.   It is also a way, just on your own, to keep yourself motivated... A person doesn't really see the results since they happen so gradually, but if they have pictures to compare from day to day, in as little as a week, you can see results and helps you remain excited about what you're doing.

But I have to admit that you mentioning pictures reminds me of that makeover pic you posted a few years back. That was quality.

Seeing progress usually helps, I would check the scale every day. btw the best time to check your weight is when you get up. And living in a cold climate really doesnt help. Its been brutal were I like since October.

Glad I was able to help.

OHHHHHH MAN!!!!!!!! I had completely forgotten about that thing... I'm going to have to see if I still have that... Rocking New Jersey blue eyeshadow is definitely my shade!

No worries Bails... damn winkies!!!

Today I took a nice hour for myself and did some yoga with this instructional dvd by a certain Rodney Yee. I never expected him to own me after 15 minutes:P

I had a stretching class yesterday. It was mostly females, but what the hell.

I went thinking it would be fairly easy, but I was definitely wrong. It hurts like a bitch and it requires a certain level of balance, but when it ends, you walk out of the room very relaxed and even your breathing is different.

Funky: Physio? Is that a personal trainer? Damn Brits....

PlainClothes: Good thought on the stretching. When done correctly, stretching is a decent workout in itself. And it has become essential for me in order to get to the intensity level I want in my workouts. I feel so "loose" after giving the quads and hams a good stretch. And yeah, it hurts like hell!

Today was a total body workout with some tough spin bike intervals thrown in for a good heart pump. I still have some DOMS from Wednesday's chest and arm stuff, but nothing major. I call it a "good sore".

Probably going to do some more cardio tomorrow morning, then take Sunday off. Seems to work well for me, and I need at least one day a week where I'm not waking up to the damn alarm.

Man KenpoX yesterday was awesome, funnest workout in P90X so far. This morning was YogaX, whoa I thought that would be much easier, holy fuck I sucked, doing the plank every minute or so is not the easiest thing for a big boy like moi lol

After day 5 though, I must say I already feel like a million bucks from P90X, totally exceeding my expectations!

Bring it!

The two of you doing P90X at the same time is getting pretty entertaining. So much so, in fact, that I may try some yoga because of it. My only option at this point is WiiFit yoga, but that may be a good place to start for a yoga newbie and relatively out of shape mofo like me!

Nope: It is a pysiotherapist who is doing some treatment on my long standing foot injury

Might need to get some work done on the shoulder as well

OK, then PT or physical therapy is what we would call that over here. Disparaging Brit remark withdrawn...

Why is this on page 4? Are you people slacking?!?!?! GET UP AND GET AT IT NOW!!! :) :) :)

P90X Day 6 and the end of Week 1, 11 more to go. Today was Kenpo X, man that was intense and fun!!! Time flew by on this one for sure!

I gotta tell you for those of you curious about P90X, I'm in decent shape but I'm very overweight and so I push myself as hard as I can to do as close as possible to what they do and I'm burning a ton of calories per workout. After just 1 week I already feel amazing! I seriously have noticed a lot more energy already and I can BRING IT more each day. I just finished a super cardio workout and feel like I could make it through one more. When I started on Monday, not sure but maybe part of it again. But today man the blood is flowing and the intensity just gets more and more each day for me. P90X is the real deal but you gotta be prepared to BRING IT seriously.

Man I feel freaking amazing!!! Keep it up everyone!
BRING IT!!!

I say this in all seriousness... if you have Wii Fit, do Super Hula Hoop and the Step stuff for 30 mins a day and then bump up to 45 then 60. It really will help you cardio wise. I know it sounds silly but it does work to a certain degree. Then you can start building up and working on doing more actual workouts with weights and going for walks, etc...

Super Hula Hoop will send your heartrate pretty far up and that's a good thing!

Did 40 solid, medium intensity minutes on the elliptical this morning. It was a good workout, but I think I should have pushed myself a bit harder.

And LOL at the machine saying that I burned 1102 calories during the workout. Riiiight.

Standard session today. mostly on chest

It is definitely the chest work that is affecting the shoulder so used the Smiths machine and kept it light weight
