I was at the San Francisco show last night and it was fantastic. I was surprised to see the show not sold out considering the fact that it was only a 1000 seat venue. The crowd was tame, but like someone else mentioned this music does require attention and sitting and reflecting on everything that is happening. It truly is so much to take in and being able to catch all the subtleties requires close attention. It was an honor to see these gentlemen on stage.
When it comes to seeing your favorite bands in concert, school and work be damned. You can always make up for it some other way. Can't make up for a missed concert. -astrotrain_jlr

Frisco show was fun. It'll be interesting to see how the band gels in the coming weeks, as, while the San Francisco show was great, the band is DEFINITELY still working out a few kinks here & there. And, as stated above, Mr. Trewaves is a spark plug live, and it's a treat to watch him and Mr. Portnoy groove off of one another for 3+ hours. Definitely an awesome cap on my 1st trip to Frisco!!! :-)

I sat in front of a guy who drove to LA from Seattle and then back up to SF on the way home and he told me that the band had the Downey theater for FOUR DAYS to do their rehearsing before the show. It's a small show tour. All the people there are big enough fans to understand that there might be a few kinks compared to a DT tour with all the production with the screens and lighting and whatnot. I thought it was funny when Neal Morse forgot his line for a bit, and anyway point is I think the band might not be perfect at times because.... It's a 3 hour set! not that it's underrehearsed.

Actually, the band rehearsed for 5 days in nearby Whittier in a studio. The costs of renting the theater for a week would have been about 20 times the cost of the studio. Oh, and there were also some rehearsals poolside!

That was one hell of a concert. My brother and I had to miss the Downey show as our cousin got married on Saturday. We had to be there for that. Luckily for us, we were able to take off a bit of work to go to the show in San Francisco. We drove up Sunday to our friends in Santa Cruz, had dinner and beers and made it to the show right at 8pm! Why do people in the Bay Area complain about LA traffic when there is plenty of traffic up there too? The concert was fantastic. We were lucky enough to get 2nd row right in front of Neal & Roine. The set list was more than one can hope for. I figured we would get Whirlwind, Stranger in your Soul, We all Need some light and another epic. I was surprised that we got 2 + Bridge Across forever. For the most part the band was really tight. I know this is a 'side-project' and they played alot of material, so you have to forgive the occasional mistake (there were only a small few). Surprisingly, or not so surprisingly, the complex parts were all nailed spot on. The only bummer was Roine forgetting the lyrics to we all need some light. He tried to read them off the music stand, but he had it too far away. (I play in a cover band and our bass player/singer uses a lyric stand.... it's harder to remember lyrics than one would think. They are all such talented musicians and performers, and in my opinion Transatlantic music easily ranks up there with all-time classic prog (i.e. Close to the Edge, Selling England by the Pound...). It was a real treat seeing this show. I am so glad I didn't miss it!
And all the science I don't understand It's just my job 5 days a week

spocks_brow Anyone have a review for that bootleg DVD? I picked up the DVD at the San Francisco show and watched it yesterday. I found it quite entertaining. It has a lot of footage of the guys goofing around before the shows--some really funny moments there. Most of the music on it is just excerpts from various shows. I think Duel with the Devil and Shine on you Crazy Diamond are the only full songs on it. There is one spontaneous Neal Morse song, No Separation (not the song that is on "One"), that as far as I know, has never been released. It sounds like it was something he was going to use for Snow, but didn't make it to the album. One of my favorite moments on the DVD is where they are trying to convince Pete to play Shine on you Crazy Diamond for the encore. He wasn't too thrilled about it! All in all, I wouldn't call it a concert DVD--more of a "life on the road" DVD--fun to watch. It was $20 and I would say it was well worth it.

Just got back from the Chicago show. OH MAN. The Whirlwind was WAAAY better live than on cd, but I still think it should have ended with "is it really happening?". The band did an off the cuff Beatles cover for Mike's birthday which was a lot of fun. Stranger in your soul seemed to give the guys a bit of trouble, but by the end it was giving me some major goosebumps. After the show I met some other prog nerds, including one of the guys on this forum from Brazil. I can't remember your name right now, but you said you were headed to NYC. I was the guy with long red hair. I also briefly met Neal Morse and Daniel Gildenlow. Both very nice and willing to give some time to the fans. Daniel took my fanboy-ish gushing pretty well and was very funny. Great show, great experience.

Very excited to see the band in Montreal tomorrow... Er, today. Montreal ought to be in raucous form with the Habs-Caps game also going on in town. Yowza! I'll be upstairs at the Metropolis and really looking forward to it.

Well, it looks like with a 3.5 hour set that starts at 8, I'll be able to catch all of the concert, then sprint out quickly to start my walk back to Grand Central Terminal. No chance for any autograph signing afterwards, blehh!

Well the Chicago show was downright awesome. My friend who is a HUGE prog fan introduced me to transatlantic about a week before the show. Having been to every DT show to hit chicago for the last 6 years as well at LTE (when the keyboard broke), I could not pass it up. The show rocked. I was not familiar with any of the songs and that really didnt matter. Every 30 minute song was just downright good. This was a show to remember for sure. It being at the park west helped too. As the show ended we were on our way out and we were stopped by security to let the band pass! I was right up front and was trying to get a highfive from the band! Pete Trewavas and Ronie Stolt hooked me up but portnoy and the rest just walked right past :( Oh well. It was awesome and worth every penny. I saw the guy from brazil who was in line with me at the LTE show right up in front again. Hooray!

Best spot to be is in the cocktail booths or by the bars. I saw LTE and was literally on the stage. Needless to say, no matter who is there again I will never be in the pit.

Setlist no different than the other gigs so no surprises but still, incredible energy at the end there for SIYS. Cool to see Nick D'Virgilio hanging out at the soundboard with Rich Mouser while I was walking out.

Just got home from Montreal by Greyhound (stuck at US customs for 2 hours, thanks random Cambodian guy with rotting fish in his suitcase and two english girls with expired visas). (Warning: setlist spoilers below) The show was completely stunning. I have never before felt the urge to get up and clap my hands off as much as I did at the end of The Whirlwind, it was simply earth shattering. The closest I can remember to that was Genesis playing In The Cage and The Musical Box playing Supper's Ready, but this was beyond either of those. Pete's playing was monstrous and he is so energetic on stage, and I love how his voice complements Neal's during harmonies. MP was kicking ass as usual (more on that later), Neal had a slightly rough start with the vocals but picked up pretty soon and by the time we got to Dancing With Eternal Glory he was leaving the whole concert hall (except the wankers next to me who wouldn't stop talking and clearly had no interest in the show) with dropped jaws. I also loved seeing Daniel shake his tambourine and shred away in the back there, and was pleasantly surprised that I could clearly pick out his voice from the harmonies whenever he sang. All Of The Above was also amazing, they made it look so easy even though it is probably their most technically complex epic. Neal was having the time of his life with this one, and he was in absolutely top form. We All Need... was OK, unfortunately Roine was having a bit of an off night, kept forgetting to switch effects and ended up forgetting pretty much half the lyrics to this, but it was still really nice. Great 12-string playing by Neal here. ....and I had to leave after that, because the stupid Greyhound (that actually got me home 2 hours late) was leaving at 11:05pm. I literally sprinted to the bus station the second WANSLN ended, and made it just in time. I am pretty bummed out about missing SIYS but it is my least favorite epic (that doesn't say much though, I still love it), and I think seeing The Whirlwind and AOTA is in itself more than worth the price of the ticket and the journey. It was a great evening, my seat was perfect (though it seemed like pretty much any seat upstairs was great), the sound was really good apart from Roine's guitar and vocals not coming in on cue a couple of times (not his fault although he did make a few mistakes as I already mentioned), and one of the best parts of the show was MP's solo singing parts. I am admittedly an MPvocals-skeptic, basically after listening to BC&SL I decided that I would prefer if he didn't sing, but he kicked ass through and through tonight. I LOVE his part in Set Us Free. I also shared a smoke outside with a nice (read: cute) girl from Guatemala during the intermission, which is always a good thing (apart from the whole getting cancer part). Oh, and I simply could not resist buying the Whirlwind box set during the intermission, my brother already has it but I just couldn't stop myself, and it was only $25.

Montreal show was INCREDIBLE! Just stunning. So many killer moments. The crowd went nuts after "Is It Really Hapening", and gave countless standing ovations after virtually every song, and many other moments throughout. The guys were having fun (I've seen Pete five times live now and have never seen him so into it!), and the crowd loved it. It was a personal thrill for me to finally see Roine and Neal live - especially from the second row! Met several forumers as well, which is always nice. Snagged the venue poster as well, which will go up on my wall when I get home! It was also quite handy to be able to pick up the Agents Of Mercy disc as well as Neal's "So Many Roads" which I still hadn't picked up. The merch guy was swamped but did a great job. And what a setlist.... the only way to improve it would be to add the rest of their songs ;) I have a newfound respect for "Dancing With Eternal Glory", which I found a bit of an anti-climax on the album. It came across beautifully live, and Neal is just a fantastic live performer. It was hard to know who to watch! Each one of these guys steals the show in their own ways. During the quick vocal-switch section of "Stranger", it was like watching a tennis match. BRAVO, Transatlantic. You guys were awesome, and we absolutely loved the show!

Wait... They played Duel With The Devil after Light? Oh god. I thought they finished after that and went into the encore with BAF/SIYS. I am really kicking myself now. That must mean the show went until midnight.

CharlesPL Montreal Set lists? The Whirlwind intermission All Of The Above We All Need Some Light (Roine vocals) Duel With The Devil Bridge Across Forever (Neal/Roine) Stranger In Your Soul (with Neal/MP drums and Pete on keys with Daniel playing his bass from behind!!) Incredible setlist. :) Roine's solo in "Duel" was jaw-dropping. Edit: The "Stranger" instrument swap was just for one part of the song, obviously :p

y1fsm8s Tang Daobo Chicago show was kick A@@! Park West sound wasn't the best, but I'll never get that close to these talented musicans again. To see (and feel) their musicianship up close was the treat of a lifetime. Well done gents! Were you up in the pit? If so, the pit is the WORST place to be at the park west. You get nothing but amps. Best spot to be is in the cocktail booths or by the bars. I saw LTE and was literally on the stage. Needless to say, no matter who is there again I will never be in the pit. We were sitting on the bench seats towards the back of the first floor, and I thought the sound was awesome. The fun of sitting on the bench seats was that I could feel every note Trewavas played vibrating through the seat cushions. We also had a spectacular view of Portnoy. It was fascinating being able to see every single little thing that he did. I definitely enjoyed Whirlwind live much more than on the album. Especially the slow build in "Is It Really Happening". Man, it was like a musical orgasm! Also loved hearing Roine Singing "We All Need Some Light". He's got a fantastic, quirky voice.

I was at the Chicago show and had a great time. As Transatlantic obviously doesn't come around very often, I feel lucky just to have been there. Here are the most notable things for me: The sound wasn't the best, especially in the beginning. Pete's bass was WAY too loud and it was difficult to hear the vocals and keyboards. This was fine for me as I knew the music and could mentally fill in the blanks, but my wife was very bothered by it all. She's not a big fan in the first place but having an unbalanced mix wasn't very pleasing. It definitely got better as the night went on. I was sitting in the balcony on stage right so it could have just been speaker placement/room characteristics... Mike was PHENOMENAL. He kept up an incredibly frantic amount of energy all night long. I've watched the making of DVD and Whirlwind Drumming, but his energy in the live setting just rocked out every possible moment of every song. He also had a very good time the whole night. Jose was behind the kit and was occupied most of the night by putting Mike's vocal microphone back within reach after being flung out of the way. There were a few times where he would go to sing and his mic would be very low or even off completely. He gave a look at the soundboard but otherwise he wasn't fazed. I saw the Radio City Hall and don't remember Mike playing with as much energy, although this is most likely due to my seats at Park West being much closer than those at Radio City. Neal had a few keyboard issues and even made reference onstage to the Chicago curse of LTE. Mike even said, "We can jam if you want us to..." I'm not sure how long it's been this way but he's no longer playing a Fantom onstage. Instead, it looks like he's got a laptop and is playing all samples from the Mac. It hiccupped a few times but not enough to disrupt things. After the show, Neal came out to the merchandise booth to sign stuff and then all sorts of mayhem ensued as a ravenous crowd of people began to block the exit. He then moved up by the soundboard but the same sort of bottleneck took place. Meanwhile, Roine, Daniel, and Pete came out. Pete was great, just milling about, signing things, and talking to people. Apparently it was a tight race to get his US Visa before coming over. Eventually, all band members moved out to booths by Colin from Neal's European band into the lower seating area and all remaining fans were assembled into a line snaking around the venue. We all got our turn to walk through, say hello, and get autographs and/or pictures. By the time I got through the end of the line Mike had even come out so that was a very special treat. Personally, I didn't care much about autographs so it was just nice to shake hands and give some appreciation. Mike even let me take a picture with him regardless of security yelling that no more photos were allowed. Everyone was really great and the whole night was a wonderful experience for me. On a side note, Rich Mouser was talking to a bunch of guys about the new Spock's Beard, which he had a burned copy of at the board. I didn't get to hear all of the conversation but it was apparently very interesting. I don't know if they're planning on officially filming/recording any of the shows (I would assume so), but Martin Kornick was there with his camera and setup. I guess Neal is asking him to film at all of the shows so it will be nice if the impromptu version of "Birthday" shows up as bonus footage. Anyway, that's all I can think of for now. Just thought some of you might be curious.

One other thing I forgot to mention about the Chicago show - Portnoy held up some Happy Birthday signs made by some audience members. He and the rest of the band were very entertained by one which said something to the effect of, "Happy Birthday to a long-haired, blue-bearded Jew". Neil even briefly improved a little song with those words.

The lighting was pretty dark throughout so even being that close a lot of my pics weren't as good as they should have been. But these are a sample of my best. http://www.flickr.com/photos/bri-griffin/sets/72157623913361908/detail/ It was an incredible 3 hrs of Prog epicness!! This show is in my top 5 of all time......and I even got one of Mike's sticks to boot......Thanks Mike!!

josh_b55 I was in the 4th row. I was 4th row too, which seat were you? As other mentioned, the Montreal concert was amazing. The band were having fun on stage and really into it. This band suits Peter Trewavas playing extremely well. Don't get me wrong, I am not taking anything away from Marillion (he would not still be in the band after almost 30 years if he didn't enjoy it) but yesterday he was all over the place. His playing was so solid, a good groove and moving a lot on stage. I guess I could say the same comment for the rest of the band too! It was nice to finally see Neal Morse and Daniel Gildenlow in Montreal. MP mentioned: "Who would have thought, Transatlantic live in Montreal, miracles do happen". Well I guess he's right, I never thought I would see them live in my hometown. Now we need two more miracles: POS and Morse live in Montreal.....never know.
Why do the Gods, sit back and watch, so many lost What kind of mother, leaves a child in traffic, turning tricks in the dark What kind of God? H

So I've got about an hour and a half of video from the Montreal show. Quality isn't the greatest, unfortunately, but it's better than nothing I guess. I'm currently uploading the rest of the videos. Unfortunately my internet is really slow right now, so it is taking forever. The ones that are done will appear in this playlist. http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=EB3B36C0082748A2

Derango .I was just wondering what was so glorious. And if the intro was as glorious as I think it will be in my head It was how the orange light was pulsating right when the song starts taking off and the keyboard kicks in, with the angle of the camera. Just one of those moments.

The Whirlwind was awesome live, and the rest of the set was amazing, as expected. I wonder if I'll ever see anything that will top that? Maybe next time TA goes on tour? =P

If you actually have the full songs (mainly interested in DWTD and SIYS) and there is any way I can get them off you, please let me know. I really really hope TA will tour again, very soon.

spocks_brow Anyone have a review for that bootleg DVD? It's very good. Lots of funny footage (MP is a nutcase... and does great Yoko Ono and Derek Sherinian impressions!), but the part that really floored me was how unprepared they were to go on and do "Shine On You Crazy Diamond", and they pull it off! Such pros, all of them. You'll note that Neal has to bleep MP a few times All in all, an enjoyable viewing. Different from what you may expect.

YEah, it helps to put into context that this was only a few years after Derek had left the band, so all the stories of the "Nightmare Cinema" and "Nicky Lemons and the migraines" era of Dream Theater were still fresh in MPs mind.

Salmacis The Whirlwind intermission All Of The Above We All Need Some Light (Roine vocals) Duel With The Devil Bridge Across Forever (Neal/Roine) Stranger In Your Soul (with Neal/MP drums and Pete on keys with Daniel playing his bass from behind!!) Incredible setlist. :) Roine's solo in "Duel" was jaw-dropping. Edit: The "Stranger" instrument swap was just for one part of the song, obviously :p Same incredible setlist in Philly. A huge thank you to the band and everyone responsible for bringing us that show. Those who said Mike is phenomenal are right on. He's (impossibly) setting new highs for energy, crowd interaction, and multitask vocals. He seemed to really feed off the club setting, and I'm already dripping with anticipation for DT in Massachusetts this summer. One funny thing, one of Mike's drum mic stands kept getting loose and making the mic hang wrong. One time this happened, Jose fixed it right before "I believe we have the greatest hope", and Mike changed "hope" to "Jose" or some shortened version of the name, pointing the stick at him. The crowd loved it. The crowd also went bonkers over A Man Can Feel. It's really sublime, live. I wonder if they were expecting such a strong reaction when they wrote it. I didn't realize how much I loved that part until last night.

I cannot wait for the london DVD/CD to come out (even though they haven't even recorded it yet). Roine's new Duel solo MUST be recorded. It's freaking amazing.
