I was at the San Francisco show last night and it was fantastic. I was surprised to see the show not sold out considering the fact that it was only a 1000 seat venue. The crowd was tame, but like someone else mentioned this music does require attention and sitting and reflecting on everything that is happening. It truly is so much to take in and being able to catch all the subtleties requires close attention. It was an honor to see these gentlemen on stage.
When it comes to seeing your favorite bands in concert, school and work be damned. You can always make up for it some other way. Can't make up for a missed concert. -astrotrain_jlr

Frisco show was fun. It'll be interesting to see how the band gels in the coming weeks, as, while the San Francisco show was great, the band is DEFINITELY still working out a few kinks here & there. And, as stated above, Mr. Trewaves is a spark plug live, and it's a treat to watch him and Mr. Portnoy groove off of one another for 3+ hours. Definitely an awesome cap on my 1st trip to Frisco!!! :-)

I sat in front of a guy who drove to LA from Seattle and then back up to SF on the way home and he told me that the band had the Downey theater for FOUR DAYS to do their rehearsing before the show. It's a small show tour. All the people there are big enough fans to understand that there might be a few kinks compared to a DT tour with all the production with the screens and lighting and whatnot. I thought it was funny when Neal Morse forgot his line for a bit, and anyway point is I think the band might not be perfect at times because.... It's a 3 hour set! not that it's underrehearsed.

Actually, the band rehearsed for 5 days in nearby Whittier in a studio. The costs of renting the theater for a week would have been about 20 times the cost of the studio. Oh, and there were also some rehearsals poolside!

That was one hell of a concert. My brother and I had to miss the Downey show as our cousin got married on Saturday. We had to be there for that. Luckily for us, we were able to take off a bit of work to go to the show in San Francisco. We drove up Sunday to our friends in Santa Cruz, had dinner and beers and made it to the show right at 8pm! Why do people in the Bay Area complain about LA traffic when there is plenty of traffic up there too? The concert was fantastic. We were lucky enough to get 2nd row right in front of Neal & Roine. The set list was more than one can hope for. I figured we would get Whirlwind, Stranger in your Soul, We all Need some light and another epic. I was surprised that we got 2 + Bridge Across forever. For the most part the band was really tight. I know this is a 'side-project' and they played alot of material, so you have to forgive the occasional mistake (there were only a small few). Surprisingly, or not so surprisingly, the complex parts were all nailed spot on. The only bummer was Roine forgetting the lyrics to we all need some light. He tried to read them off the music stand, but he had it too far away. (I play in a cover band and our bass player/singer uses a lyric stand.... it's harder to remember lyrics than one would think. They are all such talented musicians and performers, and in my opinion Transatlantic music easily ranks up there with all-time classic prog (i.e. Close to the Edge, Selling England by the Pound...). It was a real treat seeing this show. I am so glad I didn't miss it!
And all the science I don't understand It's just my job 5 days a week

spocks_brow Anyone have a review for that bootleg DVD? I picked up the DVD at the San Francisco show and watched it yesterday. I found it quite entertaining. It has a lot of footage of the guys goofing around before the shows--some really funny moments there. Most of the music on it is just excerpts from various shows. I think Duel with the Devil and Shine on you Crazy Diamond are the only full songs on it. There is one spontaneous Neal Morse song, No Separation (not the song that is on "One"), that as far as I know, has never been released. It sounds like it was something he was going to use for Snow, but didn't make it to the album. One of my favorite moments on the DVD is where they are trying to convince Pete to play Shine on you Crazy Diamond for the encore. He wasn't too thrilled about it! All in all, I wouldn't call it a concert DVD--more of a "life on the road" DVD--fun to watch. It was $20 and I would say it was well worth it.

Just got back from the Chicago show. OH MAN. The Whirlwind was WAAAY better live than on cd, but I still think it should have ended with "is it really happening?". The band did an off the cuff Beatles cover for Mike's birthday which was a lot of fun. Stranger in your soul seemed to give the guys a bit of trouble, but by the end it was giving me some major goosebumps. After the show I met some other prog nerds, including one of the guys on this forum from Brazil. I can't remember your name right now, but you said you were headed to NYC. I was the guy with long red hair. I also briefly met Neal Morse and Daniel Gildenlow. Both very nice and willing to give some time to the fans. Daniel took my fanboy-ish gushing pretty well and was very funny. Great show, great experience.

Very excited to see the band in Montreal tomorrow... Er, today. Montreal ought to be in raucous form with the Habs-Caps game also going on in town. Yowza! I'll be upstairs at the Metropolis and really looking forward to it.

Well, it looks like with a 3.5 hour set that starts at 8, I'll be able to catch all of the concert, then sprint out quickly to start my walk back to Grand Central Terminal. No chance for any autograph signing afterwards, blehh!

Well the Chicago show was downright awesome. My friend who is a HUGE prog fan introduced me to transatlantic about a week before the show. Having been to every DT show to hit chicago for the last 6 years as well at LTE (when the keyboard broke), I could not pass it up. The show rocked. I was not familiar with any of the songs and that really didnt matter. Every 30 minute song was just downright good. This was a show to remember for sure. It being at the park west helped too. As the show ended we were on our way out and we were stopped by security to let the band pass! I was right up front and was trying to get a highfive from the band! Pete Trewavas and Ronie Stolt hooked me up but portnoy and the rest just walked right past :( Oh well. It was awesome and worth every penny. I saw the guy from brazil who was in line with me at the LTE show right up in front again. Hooray!

Best spot to be is in the cocktail booths or by the bars. I saw LTE and was literally on the stage. Needless to say, no matter who is there again I will never be in the pit.

Setlist no different than the other gigs so no surprises but still, incredible energy at the end there for SIYS. Cool to see Nick D'Virgilio hanging out at the soundboard with Rich Mouser while I was walking out.

Just got home from Montreal by Greyhound (stuck at US customs for 2 hours, thanks random Cambodian guy with rotting fish in his suitcase and two english girls with expired visas). (Warning: setlist spoilers below) The show was completely stunning. I have never before felt the urge to get up and clap my hands off as much as I did at the end of The Whirlwind, it was simply earth shattering. The closest I can remember to that was Genesis playing In The Cage and The Musical Box playing Supper's Ready, but this was beyond either of those. Pete's playing was monstrous and he is so energetic on stage, and I love how his voice complements Neal's during harmonies. MP was kicking ass as usual (more on that later), Neal had a slightly rough start with the vocals but picked up pretty soon and by the time we got to Dancing With Eternal Glory he was leaving the whole concert hall (except the wankers next to me who wouldn't stop talking and clearly had no interest in the show) with dropped jaws. I also loved seeing Daniel shake his tambourine and shred away in the back there, and was pleasantly surprised that I could clearly pick out his voice from the harmonies whenever he sang. All Of The Above was also amazing, they made it look so easy even though it is probably their most technically complex epic. Neal was having the time of his life with this one, and he was in absolutely top form. We All Need... was OK, unfortunately Roine was having a bit of an off night, kept forgetting to switch effects and ended up forgetting pretty much half the lyrics to this, but it was still really nice. Great 12-string playing by Neal here. ....and I had to leave after that, because the stupid Greyhound (that actually got me home 2 hours late) was leaving at 11:05pm. I literally sprinted to the bus station the second WANSLN ended, and made it just in time. I am pretty bummed out about missing SIYS but it is my least favorite epic (that doesn't say much though, I still love it), and I think seeing The Whirlwind and AOTA is in itself more than worth the price of the ticket and the journey. It was a great evening, my seat was perfect (though it seemed like pretty much any seat upstairs was great), the sound was really good apart from Roine's guitar and vocals not coming in on cue a couple of times (not his fault although he did make a few mistakes as I already mentioned), and one of the best parts of the show was MP's solo singing parts. I am admittedly an MPvocals-skeptic, basically after listening to BC&SL I decided that I would prefer if he didn't sing, but he kicked ass through and through tonight. I LOVE his part in Set Us Free. I also shared a smoke outside with a nice (read: cute) girl from Guatemala during the intermission, which is always a good thing (apart from the whole getting cancer part). Oh, and I simply could not resist buying the Whirlwind box set during the intermission, my brother already has it but I just couldn't stop myself, and it was only $25.

Montreal show was INCREDIBLE! Just stunning. So many killer moments. The crowd went nuts after "Is It Really Hapening", and gave countless standing ovations after virtually every song, and many other moments throughout. The guys were having fun (I've seen Pete five times live now and have never seen him so into it!), and the crowd loved it. It was a personal thrill for me to finally see Roine and Neal live - especially from the second row! Met several forumers as well, which is always nice. Snagged the venue poster as well, which will go up on my wall when I get home! It was also quite handy to be able to pick up the Agents Of Mercy disc as well as Neal's "So Many Roads" which I still hadn't picked up. The merch guy was swamped but did a great job. And what a setlist.... the only way to improve it would be to add the rest of their songs ;) I have a newfound respect for "Dancing With Eternal Glory", which I found a bit of an anti-climax on the album. It came across beautifully live, and Neal is just a fantastic live performer. It was hard to know who to watch! Each one of these guys steals the show in their own ways. During the quick vocal-switch section of "Stranger", it was like watching a tennis match. BRAVO, Transatlantic. You guys were awesome, and we absolutely loved the show!
