Another "Desert Island" thread inspired by my own "DT or TA" thread
-
Thursday, October 29, 2009 10:38 AM
Responses to my prior thread got me thinking of another desert island idea. Forget about choosing between DT and TA, but let me ask you all this- if you had to be stranded on a desert island with the entire discography of ONE artist only, who would it be? It certainly couldn't be TA in this case, because they only have 3 albums. You'd have to pick someone who's been around a long time and has enough music that you wouldn't burn out from it TOO quick.. would it be DT for most of you? I have actually given this a lot of thought myself and my conclusion might surprise some- but I think if I could only listen to one artist's discography for eternity, it would probably be Elton John.

The Beatles I'm expecting this thread to be filled with DT, PT, Opeth and Zappa.

Rush , no doubt about it . They're the soundtrack of my life since I'm seven years old , so I could easily go checking for some coconuts listening to Rush .

I would have to go with Gov't Mule. They have so many live albums with featured artists that it would be like having a bunch of different artists. They also do quite a few covers, so it would be like having multiple bands to listen to.

Rush, no contest. I have been a fan for 18 years and they have been my favorite band for almost as long. Plus the diversity between all their albums is incredible. So I dont think I would ever become bored, even if they were all I could listen to.

Funny you should start this thread... Just 3 days ago, Mikael Akerfeldt and I were doing an interview together (we've done at least half a dozen together throughout this tour) and I stated in it that Opeth's catalog would be in my Top 10 "Desert Island" catalogs... For the record, a few others that immediately come to mind for me are: The Beatles, Frank Zappa and Neal Morse (Solo, SB & TA) MP

Portnoy Neal Morse (Solo, SB & TA) That would've been my first choice, but I didn't know if it was "allowed" :P

That would solve your DT or TA dilemma.... MP

HAHAHA... good one MP... but you are not an "artist" per se, but rather, a KEY band member in all the projects you've immersed yourself in... but I'm guessing that if I checked on amazon or Itunes by artist for "Mike Portnoy", nothing under your name would come up.. LOL... go have a solo career first and then come back to me hahahaaha.. That being said, if it makes you feel better, if the question was "Pick one band member of any band and all the projects they've ever done to take with you on a desert island", it would either be you or Neal Morse for sure.... if I pick you, I get DT, TA, LTE, and Neal Morse solo... if I pick Neal, I get TA, Neal solo, and the first 6 Spock's Beard albums.... decisions, decisions... (but I'd prob go with you)....

Just the 5 albums post- Spock's Beard. MP did not play on Neal's first two non-prog (or less-prog, anyway) solo albums. Btw, if you don't have these, buy them both immediately. They are brilliant in their own right, albeit they are more "pop" or "songwriter" oriented.

Gragh impossible for me to pick between Meat Loaf and Dream Theater... can I pick half of eaches Discography and call it Meat Theater instead :P I guess at a shove I'd probably pick Dream Theater just because some of Meats 80s stuff isn't great wheras for me Dream Theater is more consistant and they also wrote Octavarium.

If I could pick "Mike Portnoy", I totally would. But in this case, I may have to go with Dream Theater. Can't live without my Images & Words.

Good question with one artist discography. I'll have to think about that but Im also leaning on Rush at the moment.

Mr. Cymbal thinks it's good to see that Mike Portnoy rocks with the dancing banana! Mr. Cymbal always considered him as a close friend. Mr. Cymbal his choice though would probably be Radiohead, Pink Floyd, Zappa, Mike Portnoy and his catalogue ór Jordan and his stuff.

the KEY BAND MEMBER/SOLO thing works a lot better with JAZZ musicians as a good percentage (and depth) of jazz is under the artist name rather than the bands (if they have another name for them) names. I've known the answer to this question for quite awhile and it is and may always be Marillion.

LOL, Virra I was thinking about it today and on some days I think Opeth would be a contender too. In fact, since I'm not as intimately familiar with every song they have (despite owning all of their albums) they might be a better choice.

Damn...this is tough...bc of all the things you have to take into consideration... 1. Has to be a pretty large catalog...thus to avoid burnout. 2. Has to be pretty varied...so it can satisfy me when I'm in different listening moods. 3. Has to be something I listened to for a long time...so that I KNOW I will still be listening in a long time.. if I am going to go with one right now...it is KEN ANDREWS... Failure, On, Year Of The Rabbit, Solo...maybe even throw in the Replicants cd... there's at least 10 cds there and I am ALWAYS in the mood to listen to anything by Ken Andrews!

Casaroli ytsebam Everyone carries CD's to desert island, but no one carries a disc-man or batteries :P Nor food! Nor women! Picture this: It take Pain of Salvation's Remedy Lane to the desert (now known as an habitated island by me), and i play it in my cocontus built disc-man... i go to the beach... sunset... "This heart of mine" starts to sound in the background and i have no woman to cuddle with!! Bad Desert Island! By the way, this Desert Island thing, reminds me of Cacophony \m/

Definitely Rush, but if Porcupine Tree keeps up this pace for another 5-10 years, they will give them a serious run for their money. Or can I just cheat and say Steven Wilson and anything he has played on?

Re: Another "Desert Island" thread inspired by my own "DT or TA" thread

Portnoy DTFan93 Responses to my prior thread got me thinking of another desert island idea. By the way, not to sway the jury here...but according to your question: Couldn't *I* be a Desert Island artist in order to incorporate DT, TA, LTE, NM, OSI, etc etc?? That would solve your DT or TA dilemma.... MP lol Ya know, Mike, it's funny you mention that, because if you look at it in that light, should any of your performances with Dweezil and co. from this past summer ever see the light of day in any official sense...I'd be able to pick you...thus getting all of the DT, LTE, etc stuff AND be able to include some Zappa too.

Do official bootlegs count? If so, definitely King Crimson for me.

Definitely Chick Corea - with over a hundred albums and heaps of different styles, I probably wouldn't get bored with it as fast.

Definitely DT. 2nd choice though, would be BTBAM. Their last two albums are complex enough so I could listen to them for quite a while without getting bored, and I could listen to their heavier, more metalcore earlier albums when doing manly desert-island type things like building a raft, or holding my fist toward a lightning-filled sky as the ocean mist tossles my manly beard in the wind, thunder trembling the earth aside my booming man-yell, as the storm paints a fierce contrast upon the expression of rage and insanity on my face, and I grab a harpoon to vanquish the whale... Sh*t, I think I confused BTBAM with Mastodon. They can be my 3rd choice.

If I'm going to be stuck on a desert island with CDs, at least give me enough of them so I can build a raft.
Good? Bad? I'm the guy with the gun.

Crimson Claypool Do official bootlegs count? If so, definitely King Crimson for me. +1, although leaving DT behind would be difficult I have pretty much every song nailed into my head so I can just sing it to myself while I'm waiting for passing ships =)

This is my forum of choice after all... probably Dream Theater. they would be at the top of my list for this Deserted Island shtuff. the rest of the list would probably go as follows: 2. Avril Lavigne 3. Insane Clown Posse 4. Creed 5. Cradle of Filth 6. The Monkeys 7. Backstreet Boys 8. Don McLean 9. Miley Cirus 10. Starland Vocal Band

First off you would be alone so you would want something uplifting, not depressing. So Floyd is out. There are days when you wouldn't feel good, and when you're sick nothing sounds worse than death metal (or any heavy music for that matter)...so cross off all those bands. You would need music to chum in fish and birds so you could slay them for food, and music to keep you bustling while you toiled away carving eating implements, and thatchery for your huts... And lastly you would be alone and craving a female so music with a nice female voice would solve that issue. So I'll go with Heart. Or, since Steve Perry sounds kinda female, maybe Journey.
