Yeah, vocals on Salty Dog kinda reminds me of Peter Gabriel.  Real good stuff.

Procol Harum's one of those bands that I find are way too under-rated...I'm glad that they've had a great pair of songs covered by TA.  I'd love to hear someone do a take on "Repent Walpurgis" one of these days...

I'm looking forward to hearing this one once my copy of the album arrives. The original version is a really great song!

              Thanks gang!

As I wrote on the liner notes, singing this song was very special to me as it was one of my dad's favorite songs of all time (as it is mine)

I guess it marks my first truly solo full lead vocal performance?
(excluding the Best Of Times demo that's out there and various "shared" lead vocal parts through the years..)

Not to diss MP's vocals in the past.. but I'd almost swear he took vocal lessons prior to this album because his leads and backgrounds on this entire record are FAR AND AWAY the best he's ever sounded...

Haven't heard this yet, but it's cool to hear that MP's singing some full lead in songs.

Hey......  did Crazy Horses ever see a release!?  I only heard it that one time on the Eddie Trunk show and have been crazy about that tune!

With that said, i'm surprised i didnt see Paul Gilbert as a Surprise guest at PN 09 at LA to play this song live.  It would have been pretty "crazy" no?

Yeah, I didnt count Crazy Horses as Neal sings the Pre-Chorus on that one...

Actually, there are MANY songs I've sang lead parts on (even others on the new TA like "Out Of The Night", "Set Us Free" and "I Need You") but in all the other cases, somebody else also sings on the song as well....

A Salty Dog is 100% MP from start to finish....(and it's such a "naked" vocal as well...talk about jumping into the fire!!)  : )

Very impressive singing I have to say, and it's a challenging song to sing too. The tone of Mike's voice is something I don't remember hearing before, and he sounds really good to my ears. Sometimes in the past his tone has been a bit too nasal for me (Constant Motion for example), but this is very enjoyable. More please.

Listened to the covers for the 2nd time and yea I have give a big pat on the back to MP for his vocals on this track. It feels very emotional. Although my favorite MP vocals on the TA album are his vocal lines on 'Set Us Free'. I dont think I've ever heard him sing like that before.

And anyone notice the chord of 'Day Tripper' in the 'I Need You cover'? Good stuff.

I guess we'd never really heard the "mellow side" of MP's voice, until The Best of Time demo and now A salty Dog. I find it quite soothing, specially in the Best of Times ( The fleeting winds of time passage ) .. heck I even prefer it to JLB's version..!

Definitely agree with the kudos for mike's vocals on this song.

In fact, his vocals for the entire album (even the ones recorded in the tiny supply closet at the venue in germany ) are probably the best I've ever heard him.

Two thumbs up for MP on this release.

EDIT: I was equally impressed with Pete's vocals this time out too.

I've always liked MP's vocals. Not that he's among the finest vocalists out there, but that he knows what works in a song. He's a natural arranger, which explains his ability to toss in some great vocal lines, be it with DT or Transatlantic. Pretty cool to hear him tackle a fully lead vocal in a song like this!

And since I'm in a praising kinda mood... his drum performance on this album is jaw-dropping. Absolutely outstanding stuff. And I stand by my opinion that the last three minutes of "Is It Really Happening" are the best three minutes Transatlantic have recorded.

To these four amazing musicians: A tip o' the cap. To a job very well done!

It was a very good cover..........Mike, you did a great job... and captured the Gary Brooker vocals well...

I would like to see more more of you singing in the future.... With either DT, more Transatlantic.... even the project you, Michalel Akerfeldt, and Steven Wilson were at one point thinking about doing.

I didn't have a visual of Fred Norris playing audio of barking dogs intertwined with the vocals.  Nicely done.

I still remember the dodgy vocals on LSFNY (there can be no piece of miiiiiiiineeeeeaeaefef)

Mike's vocals have improved over the years.

Funny enough Styx did a pretty good cover of Salty Dog as well on their "Big Bang" CD.

I just listened to this. This version is amazing.

I opened the forum to read it to make sure that it was really Mike singing. I always loved Mike's singing voice, but I never heard him sing like that. I was really pleasantly surprised when I heard that track. I really love it. '

I also love his part in "I Need You", although it's pretty  simple, it is so beautiful. "I Need You" is my favourite part of the new TA, especially the Beatles part, I can't stop listening to it.

Really good job by Mike on both.

In fact, I think all his TA work as been very good. I think his voice fit this style of music more naturally than, say, metal.
