Hands down to JLB - Thursday, October 08, 2009 6:32 PM
I'm just very pleased to hear James has regained A LOT of his power in his voice back. Since i missed this tour's concert in holland, the next one i'll definately be joining just for the sake of hearing James singing that good live again!
James, i'm impressed!

Yeah. He DOES sound so much better on this tour. He still has one or two 'off' nights, I guess probably like the third show of three nights in a row or somethng, but the vast majority of the videos out there show him seeing in absolutely sublime form.

Props to JLB.

Yes, his voice is so powerful!

However, I must say, I still notice a lot of intonation errors, is it a matter of not being able to hear?

intonation problems okay, but i'm talking about the power in his voice that's back. i'm really happy for him that he's doing it again.

it has to do with the fact that a voice isn't as easy to tune as an instrument. Hell, even singing on a colder than usual stage can strain the voice a bit, but enough to sing a bit out.

It's the most delicate instrument there is, so being a little out is more than understandable.

That's great to know.
Does anyone know if he is doing some kind of treatment or exercise routine?

James is frickin awesome.

I notice sometimes when I sing through a busy enough arrangement, I have trouble hearing myself, but I don't have perfect pitch or whatever it is.  I rely on the notes around me to make sure I'm in tune.   I wonder if he sometimes can't quite hear himself in the mix, due to maybe the in-ear monitor mix for that particular part of the song, or something, masking his vocal.

That said I think he sings just fantastic.  But hell yeah, that one recent vid of him tearing up "The Mirror/Lie" was frickin awesome.

Of course I had no doubt James would sound awesome , but it's great he gets what he deserves !!!

Having a sour throat myself after Wednesday's show I have much respect for James and taking care of his voice !

Google "james labrie warmup" and you'll probably find a video of him explaining what he's been doing and does daily.

Whenever I've seen him live he's only been amazing.  And that's 14 times.  Even on the SFAM tour he was fantastic.

James is the man...one of my top-3 favorite vocalists of all time...

I dare say that he may be what brings me to DT's music over almost anything else..(by a super slim margin of course)

He's the reason why I love Images and Words and Awake. Without him, those albums wouldn't be nearly as powerful as they are.

James won't let a little food poisoning ruin his sound.  When I heard the Stargazer cover I was like "Holy shit, he sounds like 'Awake'."

I think a big part of this improved singing is the songs that Dream Theater are writing now.  The vocal melodies are sung in much lower registers than on the albums from the 90's and it's pretty well established fact that when you get older it gets harder to reach those higher notes.

That's not a slam on JLB at all, I have always thought he was an incredible talent, and I still think that.

I've seen Dream Theater live 7 times and while he did miss an odd note here and there, for the most part he was spot on.....

What I'm really glad he has gotten away from is the screaming thing he used to do.....to try to reach some of those high notes, it just didn't really work.  I'd rather have him just sing a lower note in the same scale....

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooo! I love JLB screaming high notes:

"I am the killing haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand"
"I'm asleep yet I'm so afraaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaid"
"Praying for time to disappeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeear"
"I'll try, I swear I'll tryhaaaaaaaayhaaaaaaaaaaay"
"sex is death and death is sex", "enough to staaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay"
"In spite of circumstaaaaaaaaaaaance", "Your endless sacrifiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice"
"Does following faith lead us to viiiiiiiioleeeeeeeeeeeeence?"
"Oc-ta-va-ri-AA-um"
"One man rises aaup standing in their waaay"
"Fly now be freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee"

Man, that's why I love his voice. I consider this to be an important stylistic signature feature of DT. Does anybody feel the same?

I agree 100% I love his high screams and it's part of what separates him from other vocalists.
