Dream Theater Book - Lifting Shadows - Ordering And Book Details - Tuesday, September 08, 2009 2:11 PM

Hi All

Just to let you all know that the second edition of the Dream Theater biography, Lifting Shadows, is now available to pre-order!

Full details of this updated book can be found at www.liftingshadows.com

IMPORTANT - If you ordered the first edition, then please do not order until you recieve your discount code which will be sent out to you via email later this week.

For the second edition of Lifting Shadows, I've tracked down and interviewed even more people involved in the Dream Theater story. The text has also been thoroughly revised and updated. So there's also a detailed look at the making of the Black Clouds & Silver Linings album, which includes all new interviews with the band. Plus I've also added an appendix which covers the numerous side projects, such as Liquid Tension Experiment, Transatlantic, OSI, G3 and other solo albums, with interviews with the likes of Neal Morse, Jim Matheos, Tony Levin and the DT guys.  This is edition is also around 40% longer than the original.

As you might know, the original, two book, one CD special edition set has now completed sold out. As that was sold strictly on the basis that it was a limited print run, the publishers have rightly decided not to reissue that. They are however producing a new limited edition version as there are people who want something more special than just a hardback. So there are two versions of the book on sale.
The Classic Edition of the book is a standard hardback version. If you imagine the “Words” book of the first edition, expanded by 40%, with 8 pages of colour photos.

The second of these is the Limited Edition book, which is bound in real leather. This contains the same text as the Classic Edition and also has 8 pages of colour photos. The print run is limited to 2000 copies and each copy is hand signed by myself.
The books are being published by Essential Works who printed the first edition of the book. All sales of the book will also be made via their website.

The book is priced as follows:

Classic Edition:

This retails at $28.95 in the US, £17.99 in the UK and EU plus shipping.
Those of you who bought the first edition will shortly be receiving an email from Essential Works offering you a 25% discount off the retail price as a “thank you” for your support in getting the first edition off the ground.
But even if you did not buy the first edition, for a limited time, those of you pre-ordering will be entitled to a discount of 15% off the retail price.

Limited Edition

This version retails at £30 in the UK and EU, and $50 in the US plus shipping.
Due to the high production costs, low production run and the price already being kept as low as possible, there will be no discount available for this version of the book.

Full details of all the ordering process, details of shipping charges, a list of FAQ and other details on the book can be found at [size=3 font="times new roman"]www.liftingshadows.com

Thanks again for all your support!!

I’d also like to ask a small favour – if you could help spread the word of this release through other forums you may visit, through any of your Facebook / MySpace pages I’d be really grateful!

Rich

Here's a small extract for you. This is a small part of the section where JP talks about the story behind "The Count Of Tuscany" :

“We then pulled up at this vineyard and it was unbelievable,” continues John. “It was breathtaking and was a combination of an old castle with servants’ quarters and vines with a more modern distillery section. We went in there and met his brother and he was a total character right off the bat. He was smoking a pipe and speaking with an English accent, even though he was Italian, and he was telling us story after story about the wars and the land. So we did everything from look at the grapes on the vine to going down into the cellars to taste the wine right from the barrels. It was really interesting but there were just so many bizarre things that kept on happening. We had this Hannibal thing in the back of our heads and any time something freaky happened we would just look at each other and be like ‘Well, it’s been nice knowing you!"

I'm sorry if this has been answered before, and I can't find it on the site.  Any idea when or around the orders will be shipped?  Was going to buy this for a friend who's birthday is Mid Nov.

Thanks

By the way, there is also a decent FAQ at the www.liftingshadows.com website which will answer most of your questions. I will try to help where I can, but most questions will be in the FAQ and specific queries about your order should be directed to Essential Works who will be able to help you.

Here are a couple of extracts from the second edition of the book for you!

Firstly, a section from the appendix (which covers the side projects) on the Chicago LTE show, when the keyboard broke down mid-set

With the keyboard written off, and Jordan feeling disappointed for himself and all the audience, he decided on a radical and unexpected solution – wandering onstage and trying to persuade John to let him use the guitar.
“I decided that rather than just have the disappointment of having the keyboard go down, I would just go out there and do a bit of jamming on the guitar,” smiles Jordan. “So I remember getting the courage up to go out on stage when they were playing. When I walked on stage, John was doing this thing where he was playing so fast, playing with two hands on the fretboard and was looking down. And as I got close to him, I realized he was really wrapped up in his own world. He looked up and was like ‘What the hell are you doing here?’ So I kind of said ‘Give me your guitar,’ and he realized and thought ‘OK what the hell’ and passed his guitar to me. He went over and played bass while Tony was playing the Chapman Stick. I hadn’t played the guitar in a long while and his guitar was like some wild animal and was screaming. I was doing my best to control the beast and play some riffs. I think I did a few good ones but I could definitely have done with some practice. It was one of the most dreadful nights of my life but I think the fans got a kick out of it, and we all ended up having some fun.”
“If you can’t play keyboards, alright play my guitar. That’ll work,” laughs John at the memory. “Obviously I felt sorry for Jordan because having a technical problem that you really can’t solve really sucks because you are just in panic mode. And because we were only out there for five shows, it was low budget and you aren’t going to take out back-up rigs. You are just trying to do it inexpensively and have fun. So if I was in that position, and my amp blew up and there was nothing I could do, I’d be like freaking out. I also felt bad because there were only a few shows and the people in Chicago didn’t get to see the whole thing and it was going pretty well until that point. But what are you going to do? We made the best out of it in the spirit of improvisation which was how the whole project was born.”

And here is a section from the mammoth chapter covering the making of Black Clouds & Silver Linings

One of the criticisms levelled at Systematic Chaos was that lyrically – certainly in terms of those written by John Petrucci – there was a tendency to dwell on supernatural tales. Although there was unquestionably a proportion of the Dream Theater fan base that lapped up songs about dark masters and vampires, there were those who found those lyrics incongruous and impossible to relate to. Perhaps recognising that fact, John deliberately veered away from fantasy worlds as a subject matter.

“Yeah, this album is all reality for me,” explains John. “I thought I’d try something different, went in the exact opposite direction and I wrote about real experiences. I was talking to my wife before I started writing the lyrics, and she was saying that I have so many interesting stories that I’m always telling. She was saying ‘Why don’t you think of some of those events as you have such colourful stories.’ And it seemed so obvious but I guess I’ve never really done that. I’ve written songs that are fantasy based, and even early on in our career, I’d done that with songs like ‘Metropolis’ or ‘The Killing Hand’. But at the same time, I’ve also written songs that are reality based about my own experiences. So those are songs like ‘Take Away My Pain’ or ‘Another Day’. But I realized that I’ve never written stories about things that actually happened to me. You know, about situations that I went through that were unusual or bizarre, or interesting. Whenever I wrote about reality it would always be more emotional. It would be about a loss, a feeling, a philosophy or generalisation about something. So this album, I wrote about experiences and I started to think back ‘What are some interesting stories that I’ve told my friends’. You know, like ‘Guys, you’ll never believe what happened to me!’ So I started to realize that these were really cool stories. And when you do that you are able to really write from your heart and you’re not making it up. You are just reflecting back and thinking about what happened. All these people that seem like really weird characters are actually real people. And when you hear the lyrics you will be like ‘What the hell happened here?’ Who the hell are these people?’”

Apparently, the publishers are starting to send out the discount codes by email. These will be sent in batches over the next couple of days, so don't panic if you don't get one immediately :-)

There's also a decent FAQ at the publishers www.liftingshadows.com site

Well, only you can decide if it's really worth it. What I will say is that the book is 40% longer than the first edition, with new interviews with people who I couldn't track down for the first run (such as Steve Sinclair, Gail Flug, John Hendricks, Robert Mason, Andrew Ross). Plus there's an appendix covering the side projects, so there are interviews with the DT guys, Neal Morse, Roine Stolt, Pete Trewavas, Tony Levin, Jim Matheos. Oh and there is a new (and very long) chapter on the making of BC&SL, how the band work in the studio, how songs are created, the meaning of the lyrics etc etc. I don't want to sound like I'm trying to hard sell here, but if you know what the improvements are then at least you can make an informed decision!!

Got my code! Not sure if I'm going to order the classic edition or the deluxe again. It's kinda hard to decide, given that I get 25% off on the classic edition.

More bad news, I’m afraid – at the moment Brazil’s not on our shipping list
at present. We’ve a lot of problems in the past delivering to Brazil, and we
didn’t want to take money for items we feared would get lost in the post. We
do look at this all the time, however, and if anything changes we will
update the website accordingly.

Oh, this is very nice. I suppose I should shove my 25% FOR HAVING PAID AN IDECENT SUM OF MONEY THE FIRST EDITION up my ass.

I'm really sick of this "Brazilian fraud" crap, and what amazes me is that Dream Theater products seem to be the only ones in the whole freaking world that suffer from that.

I buy from Radiant Records, from Marillion,.com, from Queensryche.com and from dozens of different places, but only Ytsejam Records, mp.com and the Lifting Shadows editors seem to have this disgust of making business with Brazilians.

And hey! Way to go on making a whle country feel like a bunch of criminals. Not only an offense to me, buit to a shit load of people.

Honestly, I can't say if this "we don't deliver to Brazil" horse shit falls into the stupidity, laziness or pure lack of competence categories. To be fair I'll say it's a mix of all of them.

Well, those bands and respective business partners who respect their fans will still be getting my money. Dream Theater won't.

10 years working my ass off with the Brazilian fan club to be treated as a fucking criminal. That's marketing for you, kids.

The publishers tried to ship to Brazil for the first edition and got stung. That means a load of books "went missing". That's why they aren't doing it this time. I also tend to agree with them. This decision was based on the publishers experiences with the first edition and isn't related at all to any decisions that Ytsejam have made either. The only solution would be to maybe arrange for the products to be sent to another forum member who can forward the book on to you. Sorry.

I ordered it. You know what is sucks and is a rather stupid decision? To offer FANS who ordered the 1st installment of the book, a discount coupon for the crappy version of the NEW book. I got a 25% off coupon if I buy the economy version, not redeemable towards the DELUXE version. WTF?! Fans who bought the 1st installment are going to want the deluxe leather bound version but there is no coupon for that. Capitalism at its finest.
DT plays more notes in their average song, than the Rolling Stones have in the entire career.

Capitalism at it's finest would be offering NO discount. I am so glad I tried as hard as I did to get the people who bought the first edition a discount, so I get comments like yours. The reason that there is no discount for the leather bound version is that the cost has been kept low so there was no scope for a discount.

Can't win really.

It must be because I'm a marketing guy, but here's a lesson: you don't alienate an ENTIRE CUSTOMER BASE based on a portion of this base.

How easy it is to work RIGHT, with competence...you are one of the people whose book "got lost" the first time? Perfect, you'll pay for Fedex Global Shipping, with tracking around the world, which is more expensive, but that's how things are.

You didn't have a problem, an worse: YOU RECEIVED THE FIRST BOOK WITHOUT A PROBLEM? Standard shipping for you.

But that seems beyond the competence of everyone involved with this project. Nah, I guess it is much easier to take the xenophpobic road.

Do me a favour and please don't buy the book. The idea of my book being in the home of someone as rude, offensive and clueless as yourself makes me want to scream.

There's no reason to get offensive towards Rich here !
If you had any clue of how much and hard he worked to get this done, you would be happy he even did this second edition..

Hey Rich,
I think I accidentally deleted my discount email!  To get themail again, I went to the FAQ and filled out the email update but with no chages (I used the same email for old and new).  Will that work?

Knowing that I bought a book by a company that treats an entire country as criminals, wrote by an author that is actually ok and supportive with that, already made me puke.

With the fan club, I spend a lot of me time fighting piracy, teaching fans and stuff. But when a band and its business partners don't want business with these fans, who am I to tell them not to do anything? If a PDF copy appears on the web, who am I to say anyone not to download it?

And **I** am rude...get a grip, dude.

Yeah - if you fill out the form, then Essential will get back to you. It will be Monday at the earliest though, but they're normally pretty efficient.
Let me know if you are still having a problem.
Cheers

My boyfriend ordered the limited edition for me, by the time it ships, I'll probably get it as our one year anniversary present- December 3rd.

I'm so freaking happy. I had ordered the original, but had to cancel the order because of financial issues. I kicked myself for not getting it. I'm so happy that there's a new edition of this book.

I think it's great that Rich is offering a coupon to those who originally bought the book, and should stop complaining. Take what you can get. If you want the limited edition, that's your choice.

Depends. If a PDF copy appears on the web, and I trace it to you, I'll sue the ass of you. It would also be "criminal" which is ironic given your posts on the subject. I am sorry you can't buy the book in Brazil. But that is not MY fault. It's not MY fault you are threatening to post the book in PDF form. It's also not my fault that you live in a country with an unreliable postal system.

You are so far out of order it's incredible.

Honestly? You don't even know what you're taliking about. I do.

I didn't even HINTED with the possibility of distributing a PDF copy. I said I had no right to tell anyone NOT to download it. Why am I saying that?

When the book came out, with a price tag that equals 70% of mininum wage in Brazil, and being one of the managers in the local fan club, I've been approached with people asking me to share my copy in PDF form. I saw communities at Orkut formulating ways to do it.

In both cases, not only I refused to do so, but - along with all the staff at YtseBR Brazil - fought the thing like shit!!! We were all "if you can't buy it, save money and buy it", "there's going to be new editions, which are cheaper and more accesible", "you can't support the band this way", and so on.

We were tremendously aggreessive with it, buying fights up and down. Of course, we are not a country filled with criminals (and when you use "went missing" - with quotation marks - you are suggesting that), but there people with bad ideas here. And we make sure they don't succeed.

And you don't see a single PDF on the web.

And now I ask you: what the hell am I gonna do now? What am I going to say to these people now? Don't do it? How?

We were waiting for the second edition to come out to translate it to Portuguese and GIVE IT to you, so you could have a material to talk to Brazilian editors. After being called a criminal, I don't have any desire to do so. Maybe the Fan Club has, but I don't want part of it, and I guess they won't either. That's what you get.

If anyone is interested in a voucher code, I'm GIVING mine. Not selling, giving. Send me a PM. But please, only people from "law abiding", "honest to God", "pure" countries.

You, sir, are the clueless. It is nice to look up at numbers and in a world map and make decisions based on prejudice. Harder is to come up with solutions that don't offend a whole country of people. It's anti-marketing, anti-capitalism, anti-ethic, and just plain wrong.

And please, do trace the PDF. If one appears. If it doesn't, please send your appreciation to staff@dreamtheater.com.br . Proving any of us will want to waste time fighting it. However, maybe we'll keep doing it, because we like things done right, even for people that screw me over.

Just want to send my support to Rich.  My finances aren't the most stable in the world right now but I made sure to utilize my 25% off discount as soon as it arrived in my email.  The reasons being A) I'm a diehard fan and B) I wanted to show my appreciation even though it probably would have been smarter to hold off a few months until I know my new job is working out

I know a thing or two about the business and figure you probably aren't making a killing off this book to begin with.  I certainly hope you make enough money to justify all the time you put into it and ignore these vocal few.  They certainly have a right to be frustrated.  I personally hate spending outlandish shipping charges when I buy something from a foreign country (thankfully thats not the case with this book).  But there is no excuse for this disrespectful behavior and rest assured, the vast majority of us fans are grateful for all of your hard work and especially getting all of these amazing interviews with Prater, John Hendricks, etc.

I could go on and on but I will just end this diatribe emphasizing my enthusiasm for the new edition.  I already got the first deluxe edition, with 2 outstanding books, a CD, and my name in the back of the book.  I don't need the leather edition (though it would be cool) and am definitely interested in the budget edition that has all of the info I crave without the bells and whistles.

I will definitely support your future work as well because you have proven to be very fan friendly and always willing to answer questions ASAP.

Thanks man - I really appreciate that more than you know. The leather edition is probably aimed more at people who missed out on the first edition. It was just something a little bit more special. So no worries if you "only" bought the Classic Edition. You've already been more than supportive by getting the two book edition when it came out. So thank you. And thanks to the 99% of DT fans who are completely behind the project. I just tend to get a touch protective of things I've worked hard on and worked hard to get released in formats that I hoped people would appreciate. This second edition was even harder to get together than the first. As some of you know, I was ill when the first edition came out, so never really got the thrill of really celebrating that release. It took time for me to feel up to updating the story, which is why it's taken two years for this to come out. But the benefit of that delay is that I've had chance to really get stuck into it and make it worthwhile.

Thanks again for your support. The DT fanbase is a great community :-)

I seriously doubt it! Maybe a few years down the line but there certainly isn't a plan to re-release "Lifting Shadows" after each album release. This second edition was supposed to be out shortly after the first edition, but was delayed.
