Awesome.... but man. I dont know how often I will have the chance to sit through 77 mins of music uninterrupted... From my experience with epics, it is better to listen to them from start to finish in one sitting but 77 minutes may be pushing it.

JeffV Chen Zen Because listening to just a piece of an epic is dumb. At least to me. I like listening to whole songs, whole albums, actually. I'm totally with you. I in fact rip ALL of my CDs as one single file per CD. I always listen to albums in their entirety and almost never skip around for songs or sections. If I don't have time to finish, I always pause and let the player resume wherever I left off the previous time. This also allows me to keep my mp3 player on random (to randomly pick an album) but still play the songs of that album in their original order. I really hope you're kidding, because decent mp3 players allow you to shuffle albums without changing their track order.

Kyo Chen Zen mercury I do asume though, that it will be separated like 6DoIT. Well, I for one hope not. Not because it's proggier or hipper or whatever, but just because I never like having songs separated. What's the downside of having it split into several tracks? Fast-forwarding through a 77-minute piece to listen to a certain section is not going to be fun, even if the whole thing is really cohesive and all. Yeah, right. I don't get why it's a problem if it's split into individual tracks.

Kyo Chen Zen Because listening to just a piece of an epic is dumb. That depends a lot on the epic. I can't stand the cheap sounding synth intro of Six Degrees, so I usually skip that one. Not skipping it would take away from my enjoyment of the rest. Having to fast-forward through it, trying to not miss the start of About to Crash, would suck. Also, many people just don't often have 77 uninterrupted minutes available to listen to music. Once again, I'm with Kyo here. Totally

actually Soul Sacrifice rings a bell... during Neal Morse's Lifeline tour he used to play Stranger in Your Soul from a band called Transatlantic... right in the drum section where Neal would join the drummer (Mike Portnoy on the Live in Europe dvd, Collin Leijenaar during these gigs in Europe) the band would suddenly change to a part of Soul Sacrifice! Really awesome Now during Sweden Rock 2009 Dream Theater AND Marillion played the same festival as Neal so Mike and Pete joined for a song (We All Need Some Light) and watched the rest of the gig from the side of the stage. During Stranger Mike and Pete came back during the drum frenzy part and took drumsticks to bang on anything Collin had put on his drumrack... this is when Mike first heard that Santana song and he was like: :"that was Soul Sacrifice"! lol ofcourse he recognized it straight away... his encyclopedatric skills have already been mentioned... just for those of you who like to know :)

Am I the only one approaching this 77-minute epic with a sense of cautious optimism? Holding a listener's attention for a 10-15 minute epic is a challenge. Granted, these guys have proven to me that they can do it for 30 (I absolutely love All of the Above and the epics on BAF don't lose me either). But 77 minutes? If anyone can pull it off, it is these assembled musicians. But thinking as a listener, just finding 77 minutes to give a single song my undivided attention to really absorb it will be a challenge in and of itself. Regardless, consider me a first day buyer for sure...

There is no other band like Dream Theater. They are the quintessential musicians of our time, and the best band I've ever heard. The music industry wouldn't be the same without them.

Regardless, consider me a first day buyer for sure... Well, I think it's clear to everyone without saying that a 77-minute song is extremely long and there are people who can't ever listen to the whole thing at once. But it's pointless to criticize something that hasn't even been released yet and nobody knows what kind of song it will actually be. It'll probably be easier to listen to than one would think. I find it hard to believe it could be just one song without different separate parts, it just seems impossible to compose a single track that's 77 minutes. Anyway, now it's time to be happy about a new Transatlantic album is being released. There's plenty of time to complain about it later if needed.

So it's going to be InsideOut after all. Just got this in their newsletter: Hi everybody, Here are some more news of our artists: TRANSATLANTIC The official press release from the Band is on our website. You will find the cover and tracklisting with it. Just to mention, the album “The Whirlwind” will be one major epic of 77 minutes.

I don't really understand all the concern over the length. A lot of movies are longer than 77 minutes and most people seem to sit through those just fine. And if you need something else to occupy your time while listening to music, read a book, play a video game... learn to knit?? I for one hope it's split into a few different parts to satisfy everyone's needs, but I'm one of those people that joins up separated tracks of epics, such as the Frances The Mute album, and (soon to be) The Incident.
It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak and... uh, ruin a stupid anecdote. I think that's how it goes...

TPR szabiakanich So it's going to be InsideOut after all. It's on the website now too. I was suspecting this based on the different release dates. http://www.insideout.de/catalog/index.php They left the US release date off of their description, which leads me to assume that there will again be a different label for the North American release. No mention of TA at all on the Metal Blade website so far. I'm not sure who else would be a good fit.

100% of the time when I listen to 'epics' I ask myself..."why didn't the band just seperate these movements into different songs?" because for all practical purposes, they have different feels, different time sigs, different riffs..etc, etc, etc...so just because a song is 77 minutes doesn't mean it's going to be one long similar feel. obviously it will twist and turn. There will likely be some recurring themes but all in all I'll bet it will feel like many different songs.

This is going to be amazing, and I've only just recently discovered TA!!! On a side note: is this the longest single song ever recorded? The longest I have in my library is Light of Day, Day of Darkness by Green Carnation, which is just over an hour. Wait, I just looked it up, and apparently this is 1 and a half minutes short of taking the title! However, this might be the longest structured song, as the other is a jam...

If you don't count jams, who knows. But Charles Mingus wrote a two hour plus piece. I think that wins.
The problem is, or rather one of the problems, for there are many, a sizable number of which are continually clogging up the civil, commercial, and criminal courts in all areas of the Galaxy, and especially, where possible, the more corrupt ones, this.
