I think someone nailed it in a review where they said the lyrics to this song were a bit like a Scooby Doo plot.  A bit silly.

"And I would've gotten away with it if it weren't for you meddling kids!"

I must not fear.  Fear is the mind-killer.  Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.  I will face my fear.  I will permit it to pass over me and through me.  And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.  Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.  Only I will remain.

You know what the first few verses sound like? The riff, the vocal line, the keyboard melody, everything. It sounds like Redemption, bigtime.

OK, so yesterday I received Music Maker Magazine in Holland and MP stated that TCOT is a former guitar tech of JP that now lives as a count in Italy and is selling wines.

Makes the story even more interesting.
Whos is this former guitar tech of JP?

For sure. TCOT's verse riff sounds just like 4:22-4:43 in Something Wicked This Way Comes. The overall feel is there too.

I thought that the lyrics to the song told a very compelling and intriguing story. But that's just my opinion... Maybe this Count just gave off a bad vibe to JP. The atmosphere that he described did sound rather eery.

Same here...I dunno with all this "prejudging other cultures/not understanding Europeans" crap some people are talking about.  It's rather simple...JP goes to Italy, meets a local guy who shows him creepy things and acts creepy, thus creeping JP out, but then at the end it turns out the guy isn't some weird serial killer, just plain WEIRD!  We've all had situations where something just didn't feel quite right (myself included) and sometimes it comes to nothing (as in this song) and sometimes it doesn't...

I think the song is cool...the music is great. I have been in a situation before where someone has been incredibly hospitable to me and it had freaked me out. I started thinking I was going to get hurt during the night, etc. So I guess what I'm saying is that the song seems plausible. The "bad vibes" I was getting in Brazil was totally part of my hyper imagination being confronted with a situation I was not used to. So if that's what Petrucci was writing about (or something like that), then I can kind of understand. I can look back on it now and laugh and feel stupid for thinking those things in the first place, but at the time I was so cynical about how nice the people were being to me. My bad!

You see, that's why it's hilarious. We've all met weird people before, even been really creeped out, but have never blurted out PLEASE DON'T KILL ME. This entire song is the most masterfully constructed piece of comedy gold ever created because the narrator is simply that creeped out by european guys.

I wrote this article. And it is indeed what MP told me, but he couldn't tell me all the details. I also send a few questions to John Petrucci for a website I write for (www.roarezine.com). I haven't received the answers yet, but I did ask for more details about the story behind TCOT. Whether we'll ever hear the whole story...

I also did a lenghty interview (it will be the cover story) for dutch magazine De Bassist with John Myung on the tourbus at the Gelsenkirchen show last wednesday. A few spoilers: Myung will write lyrics again. It may not be on the first record after BC&SL, but he definitely will do it. (He also learns to play guitar to become a better songwriter. Not to be a guitar player!)

Cheers,
Patrick

LMFAO! Shawnson that pic is awesome, cause he was wrestling Shawn Michaels and that entire match Shawn was over performing and over selling the moves Hogan gave him. So hilarious.

Seeing as how it was Tuscany, I'm certain there were more than a few bottles of Chianti in that wine cellar. Perhaps there was a bowl of fava beans as well and John just freaked. I know I would.

Great news!

Though, it would be cool for Jordan and JM to strap on guitars and give us a triple guitar attack.

JP basically explained the story to me (I asked him when we started on the guitar transcription book since the lyrics didn't make sense to me either!) - I'm sure he will explain it officially in interviews etc, so I won't really spoil it.  His guitar tech Mark is not the Count though (that must be a mistranslation), he went with him to this Italian guy's castle.  Pay attention to what was said earlier in the thread about Hannibal Lecter and Pietro Pacciani tho...

Contrary to popular belief, the overly obvious lyrics which resolve before there is any actual conflict are not really filled with very much substance. I agree with many others in this thread. The lyrics are abysmal and don't do anything to balance out the insanely killer music. Joke or not, bad lyrics are an easy way to completely kill a good song. I much prefer the instrumental version.

For a 20 minute song, I'm gonna need more than two lines to establish a real conflict. The count comes off as a pretty bitchin' guy with a cool brother who smokes a pipe. I want to hang with him and drink his corpsy, old wine...not quiver and cry. The story is pretty weak. I'm sure "Dude, Where's My Car" would make a much better epic tune. At least there's aliens to fear in that plot.

ALL OPINION.

Quick Count of Tuscany question:

Does anyone else get the crap scared out of them when this song ends because Stargazer from the covers cd comes on really loud as the next song in your music library? Seriously this happens every time for me
