PROGRESSIVE NATION 2009 North American Tour Dates - NYC show added!! - Monday, June 22, 2009 6:20 PM
For Immediate Release
June 22nd, 2009

It is with the utmost disappointment that I am forced to share the unfortunate news of both Pain Of Salvation and Beardfish having to pull out of this summer's Progressive Nation tour....

Their label Inside Out just recently lost the financial funding for the tour as a result of their distributor SPV recently claiming bankruptcy...which effectively meant that both Pain Of Salvation and Beardfish lost the tour support that was essential to their ability to come to North America for Progressive Nation.

All parties involved (myself, both bands, Inside Out, etc) are beyond devastated at this turn of events and are truly sorry to all of the fans that were looking forward to this lineup. We tried everything we could do to salvage the situation, but in the end it was not possible...

Well as the album title says, every Black Cloud does indeed have a Silver Lining....so with this unfortunate news, I bring to you the good news of 2 incredible bands that will jumping on board Progressive Nation to join Dream Theater and Zappa Plays Zappa this summer: Bigelf and Scale The Summit.

Los Angeles' Bigelf are my personal favorite new band to come along in many years...their latest CD "Cheat The Gallows" is my favorite album of the year and I already had positioned them onto the European run of Progressive Nation in the Fall....with them now joining us on PN09 in North America as well, it looks like world domination is now not that far out of reach for them!
Pretty soon, everyone will hopefully be falling for their retro, psychedelic, progressive, hard rock, doom metal as hard as I have!

Houston instrumental band Scale The Summit are a recent discovery for me and their top notch musicianship will be a perfect fit to this Progressive Nation lineup stylistically falling very nicely between the musicality of Dream Theater and Zappa Plays Zappa. They bring the instrumental elements of prog rock and fusion into today's contemporary hard rock/metal sounds and are one of the most talented group of young musicians I've seen assembled in many years.

Once again, apologies to anybody disappointed in this unexpected and unavoidable lineup change...but the circumstances were beyond our control...
In any event, PN09 will carry on and still deliver the most musical bang for its buck this summer throughout North America and we look forward to sharing the evening with you!

Sincerely,
Your Progressive Rock Ambassador,
Mike Portnoy

Ouch. Sorry, Mike.

That said, I've been following Scale the Summit for a couple of years now, AMAZING band.

WOW that was unexpected... I didn't really care about PoS or Beardfish anyway, so now I have more bands to check out.

Waaaaaaaaa...... time for me to cry like a baby.
I was really looking forward to seeing Pain Of Salvation.
Will have to check out the 2 new bands, although I would have loved to see
Kings X, Planet X or Redemption to get the nod as last minute replacements

My question is.. what about Neal Morse? and WHY did he assemble a US band to play 2 shows last year? They must have practiced for hours and hours to get down his complex music and they play 1 show in Pittsburgh, and one in California...very odd.

Bummer indeed! I was all pumped up for PoS! Hope Mike can bring them on for PN'10. Big Elf is a great band though, so I'll enjoy them for sure!

Hey,  I think DT pays the ban itself just to preform.  I think the label pays for support and gear and stuff.

Sucks but there's nothing that can be done. Still Scale The Summit is amazing and I will now definitely check out Bigelf!

Holy crap, horrible.  I've been fortunate to see PoS twice at ProgPower, so not a big deal there for me, but I know many people will be disappointed.  The bummer for me will be not seeing Beardfish.  The great thing will be getting to see Bigelf who I absolutely love.  I've not heard of Scale the Summitt so I'll have to check them out.

Wow! Didn't see that one coming! Bad news for the PoS and BF fans, but good news for Big Elf and Scale The Summit fans and the bands themselves. I haven't heard of Scale The Summit, but from the description they sound like a pretty interesting band. I would still be excited to see this year's PN lineup, if only I could go see it. Damn stupid economy and long travelling distance :(

Aw balls! I was just getting into PoS and Beardfish. I'm trying now to get into Bigelf and Scale the Summit. I trust Mike with his decisions, so I'm sure the show's gonna be nuts anyway! Still looking forward to it!

That is such bad news.  Had this been announced earlier I would have gone to Sundays Nearfest show of Beardfish.

Was really looking forward to seeing PoS and Beardfish.

Let's hope they can continue to release albums.
A bad DT album (as if such a thing will ever exist) is 100x better than anyone elses good album.

Mike & fellow DT fans, sorry for the dissappointment. I though, am damn happy to see Bigelf added to PN09. Would've been thrilled to see POS & Beardfish, but Bigelf...

Thanks for bringing the most up to date news, Mike.  Well, as disappointed as I am to not get to see Pain of Salvation (AGAIN), I'm thrilled to get to see Bigelf and Scale the Summit.  It's kinda funny - I just, in the past 6 months or so, discovered both of these great bands and have their most recent works in heavy iPod rotation.  Can't wait to catch this tour in Columbia, MD - IN THE THIRD ROW...

A little disappointed to not get to see Beardfish.  As for POS, I was planning to use their set time to prowl the merchandise tables--not my cup of tea.  Never heard these other two.  Time to do some homework.

Too bad.. I was really looking forward to seeing Beardfish.

And midway through reading the announcement, I thought to myself "they should extend DT and ZPZ's sets!!" That would have been killer. Oh well. I'll guess I'll check out these new bands.

That sucks.

Beardfish was great on Sunday, and when i mentioned the tour to the guys, they were so excited about it...but also said I'd enjoy their NF set more as they'd have more time on stage.  I am super glad I got to see them, because they were flipping fantastic.

SPV did file for bankruptcy, and I have no idea what that means for future I/O releases...all I know is my contact with them is no longer with the label and moved to a different PR firm...

Must be amazing for them, being enlisted into the PN tour with the great Dream Theater at the last minute.

FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK

"Devastated" is too weak of a word to describe what I'm feeling right now.  My whole life for the past 3 months has been the excitement of being able to see PoS.  I know nothing could be done to prevent this, but fuck.  I'm unfortunately not a fan of Bigelf, but I'll check out Scale the Summit.
Seriously though, I'll have to get over the fact I won't be seeing my second favorite band from the third row.

This is great news for me. I LOVE Bigelf and was bummed that they were only playing on the European leg. Scale the Sounds like an interesting band and I will have to check them out. I feel bad for the POS & Beardfish fans, but like said this concert just got even better for me.

Sad to hear this for all the POS and Beardfish fans out there.
Was there ever a moment after hearing the sad news the tour was in danger?
Oh well... glad DT didn't cancel it.

I'm probably one of the few going to a show who really doesn't care much about this change.  I have never heard Beardfish and only heard very little of PoS.  Although from their reputation on this forum, I kind of was looking forward to seeing PoS.  When I first started reading I was hoping for one of two things... either Neal Morse being one of the replacments or no replacements and DT just playing a longer set.  Never heard of the two new bands added on but I definitely will have to check them out before the show.

I was really excited to see POS, but one of the things I like about concerts like Progressive Nation is checking out new bands. So, time for me to check out Bigelf and Scale the Summit.

I had been DEVASTATED that PN09 wasn't coming to Seattle, as it would've been my first opportunity to see PoS live.

I'm still very disappointed that I am going to miss a DT tour for the first time since SFAM, but knowing that PoS won't be there takes away some of the sting.      I'm still a newcomer to Bigelf, but I'm really digging it, so I may end up eating these words later.

I am purdy well and disappointed with this.

I started listening to Beardfish at the beginning of this year and was completely absorbed.  Saddened at the same time, as I figured I'd never get to see them live; doubted they'd have the funds and the fanbase to ever tour the midwest.  I am lucky that I'd never needed to travel to see a performance I wanted to catch, but I definitely would've crossed a couple states for them.

So imagine me fudging my shorts when I saw the press release announcing that DT was bringing them from o'erseas.

If they and OFB were performing at different venues on the same night 'round here, I'd have gone to Beardfish and paid double.

But now, oh now, sad.  :\  Even if I end up getting into Bigelf and Scale the Summit now, I'll still be disheartened.

But things happen I s'pose.  That doesn't mean I can't BAWWW on the internet!

Grr!  Argh!  Shitfuckgoddammit!

Confirmation that QR are the guests at the Merriwether post just cuts me right to the quick.  Bad enough that I have to deploy to Iraq in September, but training I have to do in New Jersey before then will keep me from going to the 1 August show here in Maryland.

Somebody up there hates me.  That's gotta be it.  What did I do to deserve this?!?

that sucks man, sorry to hear about this. I'll still enjoy the show, no matter what, but I feel bad for all those I know were really looking forward to the other bands.

Fucking a. I am extremely bummed.

I got tickets for this tour mainly because of Beardfish. I've been into them since August of last year, and was so overjoyed when Mike picked them to come on PN09.
Before, I had doubted I would see them ever. Now, I probably won't.

Well, it's not their fault, nor is it MP's.
This whole recession thing is ridiculous.

I've never heard of Bigelf or Scale The Summit, but I'm sure I'll enjoy them a lot. Beardfish's presence on this tour will be sorely missed...

Can someone tell me some albums to check out for these bands? Haven't heard them before but I need to get into them now with only a couple months remaining.

Shitty that this happened, PoS was gonna be sick and I was getting into beardfish. But if Mike chooses 'em, you know they're golden.

Thanks!

WOW. I can't believe I didn't see this earlier, but I am now officially attending PN'09. Scale the Summit are amazing and I can't wait to hear see them live.

Words can't descibe my sadness right now, not just for me missing one of my favorite bands, Pain of Salvation. I'm so sad that Jon Schaffer of Iced Earth was telling me the truth......Bankruptcy.

My heart goes out to everyone involved in SPV and Inside Out.

I'll be honest, I'm very heartbroken that I won't get to see Pain of Salvation. It looks like POS will be another band like Porcupine Tree and Devin Townsend that I will probably never get to see live. As sad as I am and I do understand the circumstances, it just saddens me to know I'll never see POS live.

At least on the plus side, I will get to see Scale The Summit, who is one of the best Instrumental Progressive Metal bands around, and Bigelf who I've been getting into a lot lately, and can't wait to check them out live.

This does kinda suck mainly because I am a huge PoS fan and was looking forward to see them.  But considering they havent come to the states in years I wasnt really expecting that they would until I heard about this tour.  So at the end of the day its not too dissapointing.

I've heard parts of Bigelf songs when they signed up for the Euro version and will check out Scale the Summit.  As long as DT is there I am happy, the rest is just added bonus whoever it is.

I'd like to officially thank life for getting PoS fans hopes up. It was better back in the blissful days where everyone from North America could just say "well, I'm never going to see this band". We had amazing, fantastical dreams of someday travelling to Europe for some crazy excuse, but really just going to finally see the band we all adored. Life was good back then, when even the thought of seeing PoS live was locked away far across the seas.

But then life decided to play a game with us. Dangle it in front of our noses. Take something which seemed to be a dream, which seemed so far away, and make it seem like a reality. It made us believe again. Believe that the impossible was possible. Believe that in such a twisted, loathsome world as our own, there was a faint glimmer of hope.

It was all a two faced lie, wasn't it, life? Build us up to knock us down. You're a tricky one, and you've one this battle. Now we lie dejected and thrown in the dirt. With soot and our face and our spirits crushed beneath us like the tiniest smothered ant. Well, you and all the rest may try to get us down, life. But we'll be back, once we've picked ourselves back up. It'll be hard for us to ever dare to dream again, but I still hold out hope that one day a dream can become a reality. I have to...it's all I have left.

Plus, Beardfish is a frekkin AWESOME band and not seeing them makes me a sad panda

Well, while this is sad news and PoS is one of my favorite bands, I'm actually really happy for Bigelf and Scale the Summit at the same time.  I've been listening to both of these bands for the last couple months and they are both really really awesome.  They deserve a lot more exposure and I hope this gains them lots of new fans.

I got turned on to some great bands during PN08. If only they could put off my orders to Afghanistan for two weeks so I could go to the show in Ashville. I'm sure I'll read all about it here.
Rock on!

Devastated doesn't even begin to sum up how I feel. I was BEYOND pumped to see PoS. But, Mike, you have always done everything you can for us fans. I have no doubt that you did everything in your power to avoid this. Your reputation of generosity makes it easier for me to forgive the situation. But MAN!!

I'll have to check out these 2 new bands...fortunately I have some time before the Toronto show. I trust your judgment, Mike, and I'm sure we're all still in for one hell of a show.
