Agreed, you're picking music for everyone, not yourself. Don't be a jerk for the sake of being a jerk. You're not "educating" anyone, you're just annoying the crap out of them. DT is not the end all be all of music, so it is just wrong to play them in situations that don't call for it. I am familiar with all this music and would be furious if someone put it on when I was out with friends...

GhostofCain As much as I love DT, I don't try to annoy people with their music. Bars and social hangouts are no place for 10,20,30+ minute epics. In that case it's bad music. Yeah maybe Pull Me Under, Burning My Soul or Root of All Evil would probably go over well. But 8V? Just wouldn't do it. That kind of stuff can suck the wind out of a room or bar. I agree 100%. DT is a terrible choice in those situations. Certain situations call for certain types of music. You wouldn't put on Metropolis pt. 1 while you're seducing a woman on a nice romantic dinner date, would you?

I say if some dumbass can play Rock Star by Nickelback for the billionth time we can play ACOS. In all seriousness though, yeah 8V, or Super's Ready....those have no place in bars....
You're letting me go? Crackers are a family food. Maybe single people eat crackers, we don't know. Frankly, we don't want to know.

DefyingMortality ergh... too late to edit... And sometimes when I pass by people with say, DT or SX shirts or any bands I like, I give 'em a nod, you know, just "nice shirt, dude!" Once I saw a guy wearing a Green Carnation shirt! But nobody ever responds or acknowledges it. Damn you prog-nerds and your anti-social tendencies. Once on holiday, I saw someone wearing a Devin Towsend Project shirt. I was also wearing a DTP shirt, and my younger brother was also there wearing a Ziltoid shirt. I think all of us smiled for the rest of the day.

I have yet to have a real fan encounter in the street. Once, however, I was at a local guitar show, and an older guy who I vaguely knew was playing a couple of songs. One of them was Voices.

Add me to the list of those that consider putting on three 20-minute epics in a row on a jukebox at a bar as questionable social etiquette. Then again, I never really feel the to "educate" people on their music taste; it's all what you like. I like enough music that there is always common ground in a public place, and if someone asks "what do YOU like/want to hear?" I will be honest and tell them.
It might just be more of Les's weirdo weedy jam band bullshit...

My favourite DT related social moment was when I came into Bangkok airport in my Train of Thought t-shirt...The two guys booking us through the airport both said "Cool shirt"...It was small...But an awesome way to be welcomed into the country :)
This is my new signature. Enjoy.

Having said that, we had just moved into our new house in Charlotte, and we were having some punch list work done, and the guy says "you mind if I put on some music?" I said sure, and proceeded to put on Octavarium, which I had bought, but hadn't listened to yet at that point because of the move. So it was a double: is that DT? And if so, what is it?? Kinda neat.
