^^ Interesting idea, fields10 but I think the word you're looking for is 'renaissance'.

My predictions for the 6 songs

1. Yes Roundabout
2. Metallica The Unforgiven
3. Queen Love of my Life
4. Rush XYZ
5. Spocks Beard: The Light
6. The Beatles: Dear Prudence

What the heck is Rush XYZ? I know of YYZ but what is this XYZ? Is it a new instrumental?

It's the upcoming Part X of the Gangster Of Boats Trilogy!

Countered a Rush joke with an even more obscure Rush joke.  This is why I love this forum.

I've visited this site about 15 times today, checking out these BC&SL threads for more information. In line with my wishes to not 'preview' this album by listening to radio singles etc (which I did extensively for SC), I'm outta here.

Going to try and stay off this forum, completely, until BC&SL is released. Only allowed to visit RR Aus to check for the Aussie release info.

Have fun guys, wish me luck, and see you again soon!

Soon? Hehe. You're looking at a 4+ months hiatus. That's quite something. Good luck to you too \m/ Stay safe.

I love the cover, will probably become one of my fav from DT.

As some mentionned, I hope the songs lenght is a bit like TOT. Speaking of TOT,  as soon as I saw the eye and the bird I thought of TOT's cover).

I love the idea of a 3 cd special edition. Mainly the one instrumental (could this be considered the new studio from LTE ah! ah!)

A TRIPLE CD Edition you say?  Wow.  6 Cover songs.  I AM CROSSING MY FINGERS for BEATLES, ZEPPLIN, METALLICA, GENESIS or the PURPLE!!!

Also instrumental of the songs.   That is a first in my book!  That sounds pretty effin coool!

And last, but not least.  A vinyl?  Like a RECORD vinyl?  WHY?  Who uses them anymore?  I mean I have many record players and want to use em, but I dont!  But I will definitely buy the Vinyl, cuz im a sucker for anything DT.   I may spin it, i may just hang it on my wall or something.   Hmm... should I play it or hang it?  Suggestions?

I'm coming a little late to this but haven't checked in for a couple of days, imagine my joy at seeing the new album cover and songs in all their glory.  I shall refrain from any reference to sticky white love piss, let's just say I was really excited and leave it there.  The cover looks totally amazing, referencing loads of previous albums which perhaps means the songs will be a mixed bag of all the different sides of DT but who knows.  My first thought when I saw Wither was that it would be an instrumental but as they're releasing a full cd of the songs in instrumental form (The JLB haters should be pleased) it would lessen the chances of having an instrumental on the album.  That being said The Count Of Tuscany (Vampire or nobleman) would appear on paper to be a strange subject for lyrics, more like something Fish or one of the old school beardy prog types would write about than DT so perhaps this will be an instrumental track or perhaps the title is a little misleading.  Unlike many here I loved Systematic Chaos, it was my favourite DT album since SFAM but even I slightly cringe at the DARK MASTER section so I'm hoping the lyrics are a little more down to earth and maybe, just maybe we'll get a lyrical contribution from Myung (fingers crossed).

Whatever happens, I cannot wait for my 3CD edition to arrive in June,  I'll no doubt get the standard edition as well and keep the 3CD for special occasions!

I am wondering if anyone has an idea about the package for the 3disc special edition. Can you think of some possibilities? I mean I would not want the special edition ruined by a card sleeve with the discs falling all over the place (like 3discs live albums). The music matters of course, but for me the artwork and package also counts.

It may be a  box like for Pink Floyd's The Wall. Or even better, like Iced Earth's alive in Athens (that won't please the digipack-haters ... sorry guys).

My first thought when I saw Wither was that it would be an instrumental but as they're releasing a full cd of the songs in instrumental form (The JLB haters should be pleased) it would lessen the chances of having an instrumental on the album.

I will wait until its released.
So I won't go and make any assumtions here, but if there would be an instrumental on this album I guess they would put a nice different version of that instrumental song on the instrumental CD or something like that.
As said I will just wait, but I think we shouldn't reason there won't be an instrumental because of an instrumental CD.
Just a thought...

Peter Mc

Unlike many here I loved Systematic Chaos, it was my favourite DT album since SFAM but even I slightly cringe at the DARK MASTER section so I'm hoping the lyrics are a little more down to earth and maybe...

Funny thing...
I often read that people don't like that part.
Up to now I like "In The Presence Of Enemies" best from SC and I like that part...

Peter Mc

... just maybe we'll get a lyrical contribution from Myung (fingers crossed).

Primarily I would love it if the new arrangements give him more space and there would be another solo as there was for example on "The Dance Of Eternity". That is not meant to depreciate any of their work they did in the past, but when he comes up with things like in "Metropolis Pt. 1" or even just a present (don't know if this is the right word in English) bass as for example in "Voices" I always love it...

For the love of God, PLEASE no Myung bass solo. The one on TDOE ruins the whole song for me and the Metropolis one is just a finger exercise. Let him write lyrics, even whole songs, but no bass solos, PLEASE.

Just to clarify, I actually WOULD like to see JM come up with some bass lines on his own instead of just doubling whatever JP plays. But again, NO BASS SOLO, please!

I agree. I hope they don't ruin the 3-disc set by issuing it in a chintzy cardboard case. I don't usually have a problem with the discs falling out of them, but I do have a problem with the discs getting scratched as I remove and reinsert them. I also hate the way the artwork begins to wear practically as soon as you remove the wrapping. I definitely hope they don't go that cheap-ass cardboard route.

Maybe a double disc plastic thing inside, with the last disc in an actual disc holder in the back?

Ok...
To each his own, of course.
I like TDOE and its bass solo- and I don't like it because it's fast, but because the "weird vibe" it has imo fits to the song.
I am a guitar-player and so I know about the "maj11th" thing in the bass part of Metropolis.
But imo it sounds great, doesn't it?
To me it doesn't matter too much if it is an exercise, when it fits in the song and sounds good.
And... I like "Erotomania"- one could easily call or use that as a warm-up exercise, because of the fingering of the guitar line.
That is not an offense, but just to describe how I mean what i said above...
Don't you agree?

And on the second thing you said I can just agree.
I ask myself many times why that is.

As said in my post above I don't know if "present" is the right word in English for what I mean.
But that's exactly what I mean with what I wrote about "Voices".
You and me should then at least have the same thought about JMs playing on "Voices" or am I wrong?

And maybe I should describe what I mean with saying "solo"...
I don't mean stringently such things as in TDOE by saying solo, but that he plays bass lines which take center stage.
So I did mean that too what you wrote in the last line here with "not "just" doubling" JPs riffs- not primarily but it was in my thoughts.
But I can't agree on not liking or wanting JM solos in general...

OK, then we can agree... another good example of where Myung takes the lead is LTL starting at 6:30 minutes. Check it out..

I don't think he will get a bass solo on the new album one way or the other... it's just not his thing... but we're entering the realm of speculation here ;-)

Good thing...

But we still don't agree on TDOE...

Yes, the part of LTL is cool.
I am a fan of high bass lines- and of deep bass lines for parts with groove.
Two examples for you which are absolutely after my fancy:

"Honor Thy Father - 1:25"
I love the whole song and that bass line is awesome imo...

"Stream f Consciousness - 5:20"
Well, that bass line is not too groovy and it is easy to play, but I liked that part from the first time I heard it, eventhough it is not one of my favorite DT songs...

Of course I know that there are not too less people disliking this album, because of its heaviness, but I definetly like it...

What do you think?

Hi there, it's been a while since I posted my reply in this forum.  Anyway, I just took a peek on the album info in Wiki and It only has six tracks, which makes me feel that each song is a proggy epic.  Man, I can't wait to grab this album!!!

This would be the strongest and heaviest DT album to date in my prediction, since Scenes froma Memory.  The last album, SC, is also heavy, yet it's slightly more into commercial appeal rather than musical appeal.

And oh, it's been ten years since the Scenes album had been released, and I consider it as the best album DT has.

I wish you can make a concert here in the Philippines!

Hey Wey, if you don't mind could you edit in the Hi-res cover into the first post of the nuggetz thread?

You don't have to really, but if you do I'd appreciate it, thanks!

My daughter Reese will be 10 months old on this day! So I will be taking the day off, keeping her home from child care, going to a store to be named later, picking up the 3 CD set, as well as the vinyl (hopefully), and spending the day letting her ears hear the new DT at the same time as mine! :) It will be quite special! I am going to buy one of those Dream Theater onesies for her and have her wear it that day. It's gonna be a great day!

The "new" hi-res is smaller, but wider. No other changes that I'm aware of.

I'd really love to see an instrumental on there, but it's quite doubtful by the looks of the instrumental CD.

I don't know if this is true, and haven't read the 12 pages here to see if this has  already been posted, but I've read somewhere (don't remember where, maybe on a polish forum... )that the lyrics were written by:
A Nightmare to Remember- Petrucci
A Rite of Passage- Petrucci
Wither - LaBrie
The Shattered Fortress - Portnoy
The Best of Times - Portnoy
The Count of Tuscany - Myung
....aaand for the always neverenough thing...I'd have preferred 2 more original songs instead of the cover cd...but this are only my 2 cents!

At this point, my only concern now (and it's a BIG concern) is how the mixing/mastering will turn out. Now matter how outstanding the songs are, if the production is like Death Magnetic it will result in a heart-wrenching failure. How I hope for a deep, roomy sonic soundscape with plenty of space for JM and everything breathes, and listening with headphones on just immerses you in the music . . . I'm hopeful.

I really doubt that JM wrote some lyrics for this one. I really thought he was going to write on 8V and on Systematic Chaos but I really lost hope for JM coming back in the lyrics department. Hopefully he does, but I don't really have hopes for this happening.

So why do you guys think there are so many similarities to the Awake cover? Intentional or HS was given a vision by
MP and this is just the way he brought the vision to life and the similarities are purely coincidental?

Awake;

Black and White except for the mirror.
Majesty symbol on the ground.
Space themed with planets etc.
An old man looking from left to right into a mirror.
A spider to the right of the mirror

BC & SL

Black and white except for the doorway.
Majesty symbol on the ground.
Space themed with planets etc.
An elephant looking at a painting from right to left.
A mouse to the right of the elephant.

It's totally gonna be Shattered Fortress to conclude the AA saga.  "Fortress" is in Glass Prison's lyrics, and how you hear the glass shatter at the end...totally!

This is all going to be excellent, I nearly Frenched my roommate.

I don't know, but if the music is 1/2 as good as Awake, I might just spooge all over the dashboard of my car the first time I hear it

Just clear up, I am not making an assumption that there will definitely not be an instrumental (apart from the bonus disc!) just saying that it's less likely to happen.

I also really like ITPOE apart from the two DARK MASTER moments.

As for Myung, I quite enjoy his little solos in Metropolis Pt 1, TDOE and TGP so no problem with him taking a solo and I would love to hear more bass in the songs.  Primarily though, as Learning To Live and Trial Of Tears are two of my all time favourite songs, I'd love to see him get more involved in the songwriting this time.

Also the guy who was moaning about the covers disc, I'm not really one to throw Never Enough into the equation (mostly as I don't like the song) as no one is above criticism but lets have a little gratitude.  They could have just put out the standard cd with 6 songs and left it there as most bands do but instead we've got a little bonus.  I understand that you'd like more new songs, as would we all but they're giving us an album full of new material which is all we really have a right to expect so anything else is a bonus and should be treated as such.
Read between the lines
Criticise the words they're selling.
Think for yourself
And feel the walls become sand beneath your feet.

Kinda odd song titles, wich indicate we are still in the realm of fantasy lyrics I guess.  I love the album title though, conjures up interesting images and the artwork works in that direction.

Fantasy realm? Why of course...hince the name "Dream Theater."
Why would we want to hear the same old lyrics we hear on the radio
over and over. That is why I love Dream Theater...they are not afraid to write about anything.

This is by far the coolest Dream Theater cover ever!
I listened to the samples and I have to say that
it is very possible that this could be the best Dream Theater album.
Images and Words, Awake, and Scenes From A Memory could possibly
move down my favorite Dream Theater albums list.

Well, if you ignore details like the tripod with four legs (and shadows for five legs, even!)
and the mouse (also, the broken bottle) not casting a long shadow like everything else,
you can say yes - then Hugh Syme definitely got it right the first time this time!

Knowing how obsessed Mike usually is with little details I'm surprised he didn't mind (or notice) all that.

Maybe he didn't notice it because it doesn't matter...

Everyone around here freaks out about such minor stuff.

"OH MY GOSH THE MOUSE DOESN'T HAVE A SHADOW!!! IT'S A NUGGET!!!  IT'S MEANT TO BE LIKE THAT!!!"

I'm not specifically talking about any one person, I just think people around here in general dig too far into some of this stuff.  I love speculation just as much as any of you guys, I'm sure.  And golly gee, I'm excited for this album.  But whether or not a mouse has a shadow, or if a tripod is actually a quad-pod, or if the door has no knob, or if your grandmother was an elephant, it makes no difference to the music that is on the album.  Sorry to be a party-pooper, but come on dudez.
Also, I'm with whoever (I think it was Ink) said that just because the album cover resembles Awake's cover doesn't mean the music will sound anything like Awake.

Sorry, I'm Mr. Negative tonight.  I have a shit-ton of homework (finals) and I'm taking it out on you, forum.

"and forget it!!!"

4 books
4 other things (painting, bottle, door, brush)

Am I the only one suprised by the fact that there are no references in all the titles to this beeing DT's tenth studio album?

Besides the fact that I can't wait till 23 june to hear the whole 3 disc set, I can't wait to hear the final part in the AA saga. It's going to be a long wait for me!

They already blew that load with Octavarium. After making such a fuzz about something as inane as 8+5=13, even bringing up the 10th album thing in the songs would be silly.

My predictions for the 6 songs

1. Yes Roundabout
2. Metallica The Unforgiven
3. Queen Love of my Life
4. Rush XYZ
5. Spocks Beard: The Light
6. The Beatles: Dear Prudence

What the heck is Rush XYZ? I know of YYZ but what is this XYZ? Is it a new instrumental?

It's the upcoming Part X of the Gangster Of Boats Trilogy!

Countered a Rush joke with an even more obscure Rush joke.  This is why I love this forum.

Haha, I actually f*cked up there! I meant to say Part V (5), not X (10). But, oh well, at least some got a laugh out of it.

Black Clouds & Silver Linings - Black Holes & Revelations

DT still Muse fans then .  Actually they are both very good album titles. Which album, however, will turn out to be better? To be honest I didn't rate very highly Muse's last release, so DT will hopefully win hands down!

I thought they were musically rather campy as well. I like the actual melody (it
sounds great when played just by Jordan on piano earlier on), but the choruses
are overharmonized with everyone playing pretty much the same thing (which
already is the vocal melody). There's just so little going on there musically.

For me, the Dark Master bits are a little bit of a guilty pleasure.  They're cheesy as Hell, but still awesome.

When it comes in with the big JR string sound, it's just badass.

But still pretty cheesy...

Musically, certainly...great impact, but lyrically...oh well

I thought they were musically rather campy as well. I like the actual melody (it
sounds great when played just by Jordan on piano earlier on), but the choruses
are overharmonized with everyone playing pretty much the same thing (which
already is the vocal melody). There's just so little going on there musically.

Spot-on observation, you are so right.

For me, the Dark Master bits are a little bit of a guilty pleasure.  They're cheesy as Hell, but still awesome.

When it comes in with the big JR string sound, it's just badass.

But still pretty cheesy...

Exactly.  When it comes to those part I go to my evil voice and scream along with it

Ink

I can't believe people are hoping the music will be similar to Awake just because the artwork is similar...

This. It always baffles me when a band reveals a cover and title songs. That doesn't mean squat about the music aside from the number of songs that'll be on the album.

I'm anticipating an SC part 2 style. Please let my pessimism be wrong.

I want to know what song that "I lay half awake" harmony's in.  I imagine it'll be The Best of Times, but who knows.

It sounds awesome though.
