Cyclopssss Vinyl sounds 'warmer' because it has more dynamics in the lows in stead of cd's which have more dynamics in the highs....or something. Vinyl sounds warmer, because it has wider frequency range (15Hz-25kHz) than CD (20Hz-20kHz). CD on the other hand has wider dynamice range 96dB vs vinyls 75dB, which is nowadays used for loudness, not dynamics. Also vinyl recaptures the whole waveform where as CD samples it and loses some of the information. Now, would you get better sound if you bought SC or BC&SL on vinyl? No. If I recall right SC was from the same digital master as the cd and it'll probably be the case for the new album too. You'll just end up getting the digital master pressed on a vinyl and as gregj already said it'll be compressed to death. So there's really no point buying the vinyl for sound quality. If the BC&SL vinyl would be from different analog master than the cd, or even from digital master with higher sampling rate than CD, then it would sound better.

I still going to get the vinyl though, because it will still have the vinyl sound even though it may not sound as nice as vinyl can... And of course, having the album cover on a gigantic cardboard sleeve looks way cooler than having it on a tiny 12.5 cm plastic case. That breaks when dropped.

Actually there's one advantage for the sound quality. There's no digital to analog conversion to mess up the signal when using a vinyl player. If you don't have a cd player with good DAC, it might be a bit better. I was actually considering getting the vinyl just as a collector's item, if I have the extra cash for it. The bigger artwork is always a nice addition. I bought the SC vinyl too and I do have an old vinyl player stacked away, but I don't have a room for it at the moment. I have to dig it out someday and see how it works.

The human ear can't really hear above 20.5 kHz on CDs or vinyl, eliminating many of the highest frequencies. It's called the Nyquist cutoff. The difference lies in the analog/digital discrepancy, because as you said, a CD is "sampling", or taking many individual snapshots, of the underlying sound.

Nyquist cutoff... wow... where did you learn that thing... So all this conversation to tell... that music is more "earlable" (sorry my english) in vinyl than the cd, although the cd doesn´t need so many cares with the scratching...

Yes, and the same goes for the extra lower frequencies, which you can also feel (if the sound system is up to bar).

Is it possible that the album title was modeled after "Black Holes & Revelations"? Being that they're huge Muse fans.

Yes, I believe (or at least that's what I was taught) that the definition of analogue is when a device is "continously variable", while a CD is made up of binary code that has been derived from discreet measurements of the original waveform. So you can imagine that it is necessary to have a very good CD player with an excellent digital to audio converter to get an accurate representation of the original waveform. I love nerdy stuff like this!

I can't wait for the new record, and I hope Paul Northfield did a better mix like on SC. DT produced the new record and should care of good sound. When I hear Awake against SC, I hear a huge difference... the first one has much more dynamics, while SC is too compressed. C'mon guys.... I would like to hear a proper DT album.... great songs AND good sound quality. By the way: DT said they were also influenced by Black Sabbath. The Deluxe Remaster Edition "Paranoid" sounds great... no de-noising and only a slight compression.

Nothing quite beats 4 epics that are like 15 minutes each. If the album ends up being truly incredible, I expect the followup to have song lengths that would make Godspeed You! Black Emperor want to throw up.

I agree with those who are concerned about a compressed production like SC. Why a group like DT would want the dynamic range to be removed is beyond me. They actually incorporate this fundemental principle of music while writing but have it severely limited in the mixing process. The sooner this trend in the music buisness is reversed the better.

We did an interview with JR today for our podcast, where the production was discussed a bit. Here's an excerpt (not 100% transcribed, but close enough): "The sound of the instruments - all the instruments sound even better than they ever have, like the drums sound really really good, and the guitars are really dialed in, as well as it could be, the keyboards sound great, and the bass sounds better than, i think, it ever has on a dream theater album and the vocals sound awesome [...] even down to the mastering of the album, the mastering was much more effective, and the dynamics are still left in the music in a big way, more so than a lot of albums these days - that whole loudness war that i'm sure you've heard about [...] where people are trying to make it so their music is louder than other music [...] this time around we said we're not going to play this game, that's ridiculous - we left the dynamics really in the music. I think it makes a big difference to the listening experience..."
