It's hard to lose a parent, and it hurts just as much to watch your kids lose a Grandpa...kind of an evil double whammy I still have trouble with whenever Rhiannon says she misses "Bumpa".  My heart goes out to you and your family now, I know you'll find strength in each other to get past the grief as time allows and concentrate on the laughter and happy memories that will never fade.

It's difficult not to sound like a cliche, especially after so many others have said the same thing in so many different and beautiful ways, but I really, truly want to offer you and all your friends and family members my most sincere and heartfelt sympathies. I hope that the combined strength and compassion of all the Forum members and indeed the worldwide Dream Theater fan community helps you and all your loved ones in some small way through this most difficult of times. I'm sure that I speak for all of us when I say that we have all the love and respect in the world for you and we want you to know that we care about you not just as a musician, not just as an entertainer, but as a real, live, thinking and feeling human being, and perhaps, in a strange way, as a friend.

Again, my best wishes and deepest condolences to you, Sam, and all other members of the Portnoy clan and its many friends. Thank you, Mike, for being everything you are - and thank you, Howard, for showing him the way.

From what I understand, without Howard's idea, the name Dream Theater never would have come about. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family Mike. He must have been an amazing man, because we've always heard you say such great things about him.
