My sincerest condolences to you and your family at this difficult time.

RIP Mister Howard.
I must not fear.  Fear is the mind-killer.  Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.  I will face my fear.  I will permit it to pass over me and through me.  And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.  Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.  Only I will remain.

Mike,

I just wanted you to know that I was sad to hear this news, and that I'll be thinking of you and your family through this tough time. I did not know that your father had been battling cancer, and I know that watching your dad go through that must have been the hardest thing in your life to deal with. It's good to know that you were there to say goodbye to him, because so many of us never get the chance to do that when we lose someone in our lives, and I hope that your time with him in his last chapter of his life was special to you and your memory of him.

You will be in our hearts and prayers - may God bring you peace through this and give you the strength to endure sorrow.

We Love you , Mike.

Wow...when I was getting back home from a road trip yesterday, I was contemplating whether I should listen to ACoS or not, because I would only want to listen to it if I listen to the entire thing.

In the end, I jokingly said to my self "Carpe Diem because I may not hear this song again!" or something like that. So I did, and I barely finished the song right when I got home.

I barely found out about MP's dad's passing away just now...

I'm so sorry MP...I've always thought about what It'd be like when I lose either one or both of my parents, and I can't help but think that I'm not going to be able to handle it when it finally comes..

My condolences to your family, MP

RIP Howard Portnoy

Sincerest condolensces Mike... "The Spirit Carries On" in deed... DT's song was foremost in my mind back in June last year when my dear Mother passed away after a long and meaningful life. That picture of you and your dad is absolutely killer and a great way to always remember how much he meant... Your dad is in a far better place now and free of all our earthly discomforts... Carpe Diem!!!

Re:RIP Howard Portnoy 1940-2009 - Monday, January 05, 2009 6:40 PM
Further to the posting of the interview I did with Howard (thanks Greg), I would like to include my introductory ramblings as a small tribute to Howard.

Introduction by Kerry Parker

Mike Portnoy is extremely fond of his dad. You can tell by the way he talks about him and illustrated by the fact that he had his dad join him on the commentary for the Yellow Matter Custard DVD. It had been clear to me for a long time that a lot of Mike’s inspiration and love of music comes from his father and I was hoping to one day meet this inspirational man! Luckily for me (as regular readers of New Voice will know) the opportunity came at the Aftershow at Radio City Music Hall, New York in April after DT’s final show of the Octavarium Tour. Scott Hansen introduced me to Howard Portnoy and I gave a copy of New Voice to him. It occurred to me very quickly that if I was keen to meet and talk to Howard then most likely other people would be keen to hear a bit about what is important to him and (hopefully!) some stories about Mike growing up. So never one to miss an opportunity, I asked Howard whether he would agree to do an interview for New Voice and he accepted. Several months later, as we began to put this mammoth issue together, I got in touch with Howard and he agreed to answer my questions.

I would like to take the opportunity to thank Howard for putting up with my pestering emails and Taking the Time to type up such thoughtful interesting answers – he truly is a gent!

I hope the tense doesn't jar too much...

You and your family are in our thoughts Mike, I will miss receiving emails from Howard and I stand by my final statement of the interview - MP, your dad was truly a gent.

*hugs*

I expressed my condolences earlier, but I have to mention having just watched MP's Score the other day with commentary, you could tell how proud MP was when talking about his Dad being in the audience.  With that commentary being recorded in November, and knowing what we know now, I imagine it must've been a little hard talking about him without getting choked up.  I know it was like that for me before and after my Dad died last January knowing the inevitable was coming (my Dad had cancer too), so this really hit home for me the other day with it being almost a year now.  And to reiterate Kerry's mention of the YMC DVD, when that came out I posted how I absolutely loved HP's commentary on that.  I will have to watch/listen to that again.  So once again, my condolences.

Man I just finshed watching the commentary on the Drum Score DVD and Mike talked about how happy his dad was at the show and I remember thinking how cool that was and then I read this today.

I can't imagine what you and your family are going through.  I hope I  am strong enough like you and your family to be there at the end like that.  That is one of my biggest fears.

My families prayers are with you and your family.

RIP HP
