I'll do what I'll always do: approach the next CD with the least amount of excitement possible (although I'm thinking it will be very hard).
Between two evils, I always pick the one I never tried before.

OMG, I can't handle the wait right now Mike, but I know I will handle that kind of album

Time for that 80's song that comes to my mind everytime I hear or read news from an upcoming DT album or tour:

I'm so excited, and I just can't hide it, I'm about to lose control and I think I like it

Yep. I'm getting cranked for new DT again. Mike pushed a few "happy buttons" of mine with his post.

All this analyzing is seriously funny as hell.

Some of you are getting all frothy over a few words and completed drum tracks. Keep rolling it over and over in your heads and by release day you will have painted a picture in your mind's eye of what the new CD will be like, and the actual disc will "never" be precisely what you had anticipated. So you'll be disappointed. Don't do that to yourself.

Wait patiently until drop day. Go into it without any unrealistic expectations or preconceived notions and just take it for what it is. And be blown away by it.

DREAM THEATER continues to raise the bar every time out... and we should all know full well by now that good ol' MP never steers us wrong... so if Mike is already personally excited about this new record I suspect it will BLOW EVERYBODY AWAY... it will be a pleasure to get this when it comes out.  !!!

Simply Wow!

This is the only certain thing we can conclude from his post:

He knows how a lot of people feel regarding their last three albums (ie quality of writing is down; they're too formulaic; it's all about the shred; and so on). Furthermore, he is fully aware of the comparisons between the latest albums and the songs in his list (Note: 8V is within the latest albums). He is also painfully aware of the criticism he and the band receive here.

So,

There is no way in hell that he would say those things unless he was sure that the forum would liken this new album to those songs as well; otherwise, the backlash would be huge!

In conclusion, . I can't wait!

Actually, knowing MP, he's probably toying with us, and he literally does mean an album with the exact same song lengths as those songs.

Strange that he includes PMU with those other songs. IMO, it's a much weaker song when compared to the other 4, in terms of just about everything (except air time in the 90's)

I think he is only saying one or more of the songs will be more traditional (in the sense of verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, solo, chorus), but at the same time will also be metal and possibly have interesting/cool interludes between verses and choruses.

Either way, he is saying the spirit of the music will be akin to PMU.

Or, I could be way off

When I saw the title, the first thing I thought was that Mike's new drum kit was finished and ready to be shown off.

It's cool that the man is so pumped about what they've been working on. I'll be looking forward to hearing this!

Holy...fucking...shit!!!!! I cannot wait, although the countdown to the album's release is half the fun. I am super psyched. DT has yet to disappoint me, and everything they have put out from Scenes onward has been absolutely kick ass (I love the pre-Scenes albums, but at this point DT is a well oiled machine guaranteed to deliver something truly awesome, and this has happened consistently enough for me to make such an assumption). I KNOW the new album will absolutely rule. This is great news.

Re-read MP's post: The drums are done. Nothing was said about the rest of the instruments. He could be strictly talking about his drumming on each song.

So. Fucking. Excited.

Also, a while ago, I said it would be amazing if it were a double album; Disc one having 9 songs, each in the style of a previous album, and disc 2 being some amazing new direction we never saw coming. Could it be?
Probably not, but it sounds amazing anyway.

I personally believe you're misunderstanding. When he said the album would sound like a mix of those classic DT songs, I don't think he meant that individual songs would be comparable in style to each one of those... in other words, I don't think he meant there'd be one song similar to "ACOS', one song similar to "TGP", etc.... I just think he meant that the entire album as a whole would have elements of each of those songs within them.

Description sounds awfully promising!  A phenomenal song like Octavarium would be extremly hard to top, but I sure as hell hope they've done it.  Maybe this is why Mike was more excited and crazed than normal in Monday's studio video.

Album should be called MP And Mah Boiz Back In Town. Yeeaaaaaaah Boiiiiiiii. Very progressive. Expanding the horizon of the music.

That one is for free, DT. You heard it here first.

I hate to bring any cynicism to this thread, but aren't people saying things like "with Mike this excited, it's bound to be great!" being a little short-sighted??  MP's hardly gonna start a topic saying "hey guys, finished recording my drum tracks today...  The songs aren't that great, but maybe you'll like them... I sure as Hell don't".

That said, I still trust the album'll be great!

Considering EVERY DT album has been an example of pure awesomeness, I really do not think we have anything to worry about.

Would be pretty funny if he did say that though.  I wonder what he'll stir up for April Fools this time.

(The one prior to SC was the "Portnoy" mispelling)

Wow, that description sounds really intriguing. All of those songs are among my favorite DT tunes. If the album really lives up to that, it will be awesome.

Strange that he includes PMU with those other songs. IMO, it's a much weaker song when compared to the other 4, in terms of just about everything (except air time in the 90's)

It's not weaker at all, it's just more straight-forward. One of the rare cases where
DT managed to pull that off without the result sounding forced and a deserved hit.

True, but isn't this the first time he's talked about the production/creation/whatever of the album (before it came out)?  If he wasn't excited and extremely proud of it, he wouldn't do it.

I don't think so. I mean they ALWAYS write the music first and I guess they record the music that they have written and only AFTER that do they write lyrics for them.

Imagine a DT album with A Change Of Seasons, Octavarium, Learning To Live, Pull Me Under and The Glass Prison....all on one album....

The part of me that likes to F with people really wants this to actually be the release.  I'd laugh my ass and balls off as I walked up to the counter and bought it

I don't recall Mike being this charged up before the release of TOT or Octavarium.  He's admitted in interviews since  (Eddie Trunk I think) that  he's not entirely happy with those albums now listening back to them.  SFAM and SC provoked a totally different reaction though, with Mike saying they were their best albums to date.

Mike seems like an honest guy.  I don't think he would lay on the bullshit if he's not genuinely happy with the progress of the studio sessions.

I'm sure he wouldn't, but he's hardly impartial and we shouldn't believe it'll be awesome because he's excited about it.

We should believe it'll be awesome because all the previous albums have been awesome

I think people went too far interpreting Mike's post. We don't really know anything, and the things he said could mean lots of things.

On the flipside to this awesome news of a new album full of strong classic tunes, I can't help but be saddened that it seems like there will be no 5 minute dt songs, stuff like 6:00, Surrounded, Burning My Soul, Strange Deja Vu. I really enjoy those songs, they really fill out an albums dynamic for me. Ah well I'd rather A+ epic songs over forced shorter songs!

Mike, that is awesome news.  My wife and I were just in San Juan this week and heading home on a cruise right now.  We were feeling kinda melancholy about attending the last four DT shows in May and June.  I can't wait to do another DT caravan this coming tour in support of a new album.  Nice news to end our vacation.  Tell JP to get off his ass and finish the guitar parts if he hasn't done so
