EXOTIC ANIMAL PETTING ZOO: Next big thing avant/prog/extreme Metal?

I've just been pretty much blown away by this band/album for the 2nd straight day. Does anyone else know them?..their debut album "I Have Made My Bed In Darkness" is somewhat of a mindfuck in different styles. You can tell they listen to groups like Dillinger Escape Plan and BTBAM..but also some others like Oceansize and Kayo Dot (and maudlin of the Well). I swear, playing their album again today I'm getting flashbacks to last year with COLORS. It's really melodic at times..some of the clean vox work really well..and some of the jazzy parts..guitar work..and shifting moods are totally working for me. http://www.myspace.com/exoticanimalpettingzoo

ORIGINAL: spocks_brow Just so you know, turning text blue and underlining it doesn't make it a link Haha! hilarious! Anyways, IMO the thing with most of these bands is the lack of songwriting skills, and this is why BTBAM are among the leaders of this scene right now. Colors wasn't all noodly meedly, they showcased some serious writing skills as well. Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge sucker for weird avantgarde shit, but if there's no red thread, I easily get bored. This is the case with this band. Maybe they need a couple more albums to evolve.
Here he comes. Here comes John Wayne. "I'm not going to cry about my Pa. I'm going to build an airport... Put my name on it." Why, Michael? So you can fly away from your feelings?

I agree..some bands can shred with the best of them, but have no knack for melody or writing something that sticks with you. This album/band seems to more about mood than anything else. Yeah, they have chops, but they also know how to hit the nail on the head with emotion. For example: the theme that the guitar creates in the closing track "Arendering" is absolutely gorgeous..I can't get it out of my head having only played it a couple of times.

Another great find...all I can say is this album is pretty solid throughout. Kind of like BTBAM/Cynic. A lot of the instrumental parts remind of Opeth also. I'm surprised that this band isn't getting a lot of hype. It's one of the most unique ones around.

yeah..well it only came out a few weeks ago (Aug 19th) and it's a debut album so that may be part of it. I found a copy on Amazon for about $10 today. I was glancing at their myspace page today and found some stuff interesting. Influences Truth Bjork Dillinger Escape Plan Zeitgeist Burnt by the Sun Rapoon Nurse With Wound Carl Sagan Future sound of London Aphex Twin Mew Stars of the Lid Sigur-Ros Boards Of Canada Radiohead KEVIN FEDERLINE (kfed)is GOD A creation combining jazz fusion, progressive metal, alternative, and post-rock genres. the Post-Rock and "core" element is there. A guy mentioned on another board at times they sound like Deftones which actually I can see that. I guess now after having played this album again a couple of times, the best quality I think for me is like BTBAM and some others..the great, melodic moments are really worthwhile that overtime the harsh or extreme sections create a wide-range of emotion. It's like they have those parts in each song that you love that are totally worth waiting for.

WHERE THE HELL DID THE TERM "SHOEGAZE" COME FROM?! To me it seemed to just appear one day with no explanation.

ORIGINAL: Scifi Saint WHERE THE HELL DID THE TERM "SHOEGAZE" COME FROM?! To me it seemed to just appear one day with no explanation. This British magazine coined the term when bands would play very still while concentrating on their effects board instead of rocking out. So it's mostly associated with post-rock. I don't really see how it can be characterized as a genre as it doesn't necessarily define the music and its sound.

A little on the insane spectrum of music. It kind of makes my head hurt at times but there are also a lot of strangely beautiful moments as well. I'm not sure about these guys at first listen. I'll have to spin these few tracks on MySpace a few more times. Right now, it just sounds sloppy and all over the place.

I've been listening to these guys since you posted this thread. They really are awesome everyone should check them out. Oh and shoegaze is just ridiculously random. It's supposed to be catagorized by the members just staring at their shoes. It doesn't really define the music.

holey fucking hell!!!! This is fucking nuts, and I LOVE IT!!! It first sounded like "Mars Volta", but RoCKuS already nailed it by saying they really do have the skills to make an incredible atmosphere. Mars Volta is chaotic and it actually gets agrivating. This band sounds more like Mars Volta and Slipknot mixed together with Protest The Hero. But the atmosphere is insane!!!

I had if Tool and BtBaM had a baby and raised it on fusion. Yours sounds good too.
