MP's Guide to Modern Prog for Metal Edge

This was a side-bar I was asked to write for the June '08 issue of Metal Edge magazine.
Being the issue has now come and gone, I figured I'd reprint it here for you all to enjoy in case you missed it!

MIKE PORTNOY'S GUIDE TO MODERN PROG

This is a general list of the some of the bands and sub-genres that have spawned in progressive music through the years. Of course in many cases, many of the bands and their influences easily blur the lines and cross over into each of the other different sub-genre. 

 
1. OPETH
Type of Prog: Death Metal, Psychedlic, Goth 

Our tour-mates on PN08, Sweden's Opeth are carrying the torch for daring & experimental music in the modern Death Metal genre. Guitarist/Vocalist/Leader Mikael's Akerfeldt's death growls may be something to get used to for the Yes-loving prog purist, but when he sings clean, his voice and melodies bring back memories of Justin Hayward and John Wetton in their heydays and can send shivers down your spine. Their combination of BRUTAL deathly riffs and BEAUTIFUL haunting moods have inspired me to coin a whole new phrase to describe their sound: BRUTIFUL! 

Trace their roots to: Black Sabbath, King Crimson, Camel, Judas Priest, Tool

2. BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME
Type of Prog: Avant Garde, Technical, Mathcore

BTBAM are part of a whole new wave of extreme, over-the-top metalcore progressive music.

Their latest CD "Colors" is a 60-minute metal masterpiece of moods, technique and amazing musicianship. I love this album so much, it immediately captured them a spot on our inaugural Prog Nation tour. And although they are way more extreme than DT, their acrobatic musicianship makes them the most similar to Dream Theater of all the bands on the PN08 bill.

Trace their roots to: Rush, Watchtower, Meshuggah, Mr. Bungle, Naked City

3. SYMPHONY X
Type of Prog: Hard Rock, Symphonic, Neo Classical

Symphony X are leading the way for the more "traditional" progressive metal bands that have naturally followed in the wake of Dream Theater's success in the early 90's. A combination of virtuoso musicianship led by guitarist Michael Romeo (think Yngwie) and the incredibly powerful voice of Russell Allen (think Dio meets Steve Walsh), Symphony X were hand picked by yours truly to join the Gigantour bill in 2005 (Dave Mustaine asked me to pick a band for that tour) as well as to join DT as our special guests for our entire European tour in 2007.

Trace their roots to: Rainbow, Yngwie Malmsteen, Iron Maiden, Queensryche, Fates Warning

4. PORCUPINE TREE
Type of Prog: Alternative, Ambient, Pop 

Drawing from the more pop, alternative and ambient elements of progressive music and less from the bombastic and metal side, Porcupine Tree are leading the way for creating music that is moody and experimental while still being incredibly melodic and musical. Having opened for DT in Europe during our Metropolis 2000 tour, I am happy to see their career continue to grow and develop with each release.  

Trace their roots to: Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Marillion, Radiohead, Muse

5. BEARDFISH
Type of Prog: Traditional, Retro, Classic Prog 

Sweden's Beardfish are my favorite "new" band with an "old" sound. Utilizing all of the classic styles and sounds of the original progessive rock bands of the 70's (mellotron, hammond organ, leslies, clean guitars, dry organic drums, etc.), these guys are making music for the folks who truly miss the classic bands that started this whole genre. Check out their latest releases "Sleeping in Traffic - Parts 1 & 2" and you'll swear it's 1973 all over again! 

Trace their roots to: Yes, Genesis, Gentle Giant, Frank Zappa

Honestly Mike... Your knowledge of prog both classic and modern seems to be ENDLESS!!!!!

These are the same bands from 'Dream Theater's Guide To Prog Metal' which was in Classic Rock Magazine a couple of months ago I seem to remember. I don't know what Metal Edge is though I assume it's the American equivalent of Metal Hammer or Terrorizer...

I'm actually a sucker for neo-prog but I'm yet to discover Beardfish

Beardfish (along with all those other Swedish bands mentioned, and many more not mentioned) are so damn good.  At NEARfest I asked MP if he had been "South of the Border" lately and for a second he looked puzzled until he realized I was talking about the band on his shirt.  He was wearing a Beardfish shirt at the time.

I also like how all of these bands have prog and metal elements but each have certain qualities that make them unique.

Cool article Mike.  One other new band that you might enjoy from the traiditional, retro, classic prog sub-genre is Moth Vellum out of California.  Great Yes/Genesis inspired band with vocals reminiscent of Geddy Lee. 

nice band-name dropping Mike!..the only thing I was a bit surprised to see Protest the Hero mentioned under Symphony X and NOT Between the Buried and Me. When I 1st got into PtH late last year, it may have had to do with coming on the heals of becoming a BTBAM fanboy, but the band PtH reminded most of was definitely BTBAM..altho the bands compared there make sense, I just have always got the sense about those 2 together and the large crossover in fanbases in the 2.

Indeed, Scar Symmetry is another Swedish gem. Their newest album, Holographic Universe is by far, my favorite album this year.

Porcupine Tree's late 90s material was clearly influenced by The Bends and OK Computer.  On the other hand, considering that Muse didn't hit the scene until '99, I don't see how in the world you could trace Porcupine Tree's roots to them.  I don't know anyone who has ever said that PT and Muse sound similar, anyway.

during the last few months I've seen all of the main bands except beardfish + yngwie + flower kings  ... meshuggah's playin vienna in a few weeks + opeth again for christmas  ..guess I'm lucky !!!

Listen to everything BUT the vocals. Especially the guitars.

Hmm, very good article and selections by the man himself. Maybe we can add some a little salt to the soup with these:

Unexpect : They've the sick, avantgarde and the progressive approach of course, but be aware they're not for everybody's cup of coffee (i think somebody used that line before :p)

Pure Reason Revolution : Following the footprints of Porcupine Tree, they have a really powerful sound & amazing compositions where it takes you from the metalic riffs to the melodic clean chrous. Their The Dark Third album is a must have for everyone on here.

The Mars Volta : Despite their latest album wasn't good as the two, these guys bring back the old fashion progressive sound like Beardfish&Spock's Beard&etc (espcially for the vocals) And they are the progressive version of Led Zepplin in the millenium

Good list to keep in mind for the next cd buying binge
Gonna have to add space AGAIN in my dvd drawer for DT's newest one, between DT and all the MP drum dvds, space is getting hard to find
Saw Symphony X  3 times (once in Madrid)last year and they're always great to see too.

Me neither. They sound emo to me. I bought colours because everyone was having fits over it. I've never been able to make it through the whole album. I do like the drums though. Can't stand the singing, songs or guitars. Not my cuppa.

You should certainly check out Beardfish.
 
But - I'm sure MP would agree, its a different world. A different vibe. If you love the old style Hammond driven music, check out Beardfish, or even Rikard's other band; Bootcut.

Well Mike... with summer drawing to a close it sounds as if you just might be starting to gear up and get back at it... back on July 11 you hinted that the first order of business would be the LTE DVD & CD  along with an Octerberish return to the studio for DT... you also hinted that either sometime 'before' or 'after', the next YTSEJAM batch might get some attention... Do you know yet if it will be a thumbs-up "Before"   or kind of a thumbs-down "After"  !!! Just wondering...!!! Hope your summer time off was a blast.

Same here. At the moment, my next batch of CDs on its way will include Phideaux's Doomsday Afternoon, The Tangent's Not as Good as the Book (with the book, I am an English major after all), and the Beardfish Sleeping in Traffic albums. A very exciting haul. I can't wait to send out for it. That's a lot of music, and great music at that.

Glad to see you like the music from our country, I can only say I agree. Fact is I'm very proud to say just weeks ago I recorded in the Beardfish studio and both them and Scar Symmetry are from my hometown! Cool to see that people here know about them!

I have nothing against the vocals, i'm sure many people like them. It's the same with james probably, I'm sure many people would take BtBaM vocals over James any time. They're just not my style, I think they ruin the whole atmosphere of the songs. Spiral Architect did tech metal and still managed to have good wailing vocals. I like Akerfeldt's Opeth vocals a lot, for example, but they say a lot more to me than Tommy Rogers' vocals.

I'd rather take Circus Maximus as an important modern prog band over BtBaM. BtBaM has always come across as more of a hardcore/math metal band to me, than a progressive one.

For me, my main 5 favorite modern prog are DT, Opeth, Pagan's Mind, Ayreon and Blind Guardian (who are originally a power metal band but recently very progressive). In fact it's strange to me that Mike didn't mention Ayreon since he has so many albums out and it's such an elaborate and awesome project. I would say they are way way above even DT sometimes, just brilliant music and wonderfully produced.

Yep.  Agreed.  Even their recent work really has very little connection to Muse.

And PT are just in a different league to Muse anyway.

Not to quibble with The Man, but I'd just like to say that Kaipa belongs on any list of the best Swedish prog bands around right now. Their output since they got back together has been nothing short of magical, IMO.
