Looks like I'll have 2 copies now.

I think I can barely see myself in the crowd photo for the Richmond, VA show.

The "easter egg" thing annoys me. When I shell out my hard-earned money for a DVD, I shouldn't have to hunt around to try to find some of the stuff on it. It should all be easily accessible and not hidden.

+1
something like that

Errrrmm... The whole point of easter eggs is you have to hunt around to find them. It is NOT the main feature of the DVD, only bonus content - so you should appreciate that they give a damn at all to give us these extra scenes.

No offence, but they are easy to find on this dvd set.

Easy to find or not, there are actually a lot of people who simply are not even aware of "easter eggs." I never knew about them until reading about them on a DT message board. So, there are potentially a lot of people missing out on content simply because they are unaware of it.

Yes, I know that it can be argued that the easter eggs are extra goodies, but those extra goodies do NOT have to be hidden. A hidden track on a CD is one thing, since it will play automatically if the CD is left spinning, but the hidden DVD content is quite another, because a lot of people simply won't get to see everything that they paid for.

Don't get me wrong, I don't hate easter eggs, I just think that the idea of hiding some of the DVD's content is a bit tacky (especially if they're made difficult to find).

But, as I said before, that's just my 2¢ worth....

That whole Jordan solo and Petrucci's interjection during Surrounded is truly the bomb.  I'd love to see something like that turning into some 10 minute epic.

This is really not a great DVD...
They should have done a Progressive Nation DVD instead. That would have been waayyyyyy better. Three on DVD would be sweet, Opeth would kick ass, and it could have been pro-cammed and mixed properly. Really a Progressive Nation DVD would have made much more sense with the whole CD-Live DVD trend that's growing. I usually will eat up anything that Dream Theater releases no matter what it is, but this just isn't great...

Yeah you're right, so why don't we all return our dvd/cd sets and demand a refund

maybe MP will see that he should have consulted you all along. I mean seriously MP, why didn't you think of this instead of giving DT FANS something, You should have thought of everyone else!

yeah it's impossible to suggest that DT put out a subpar product on a DT board...

The Good: The Drum Duet with the PN08 drummers. TDEN is way better live.
Jordan Rudess but did any notice that the end of the Blind Faith piano break seemed a bit off? The performances are generally very good.

The Ok: The interviews & backstage stuff didn't seem very important, but some were kinda funny.
The Setlist is ok.

The Bad: The overall quality of the sound is rough, especially James, who sounds all over the place on tunes like Panic Attack, and Jordans key sound on PA made me think someones cell phone was going off the whole time.

I would give this package a C+ only comparing DT DVD's

According to my e-mail, my Fedex package from FYE has arrived at my home.  I'm pretty shocked actually, FYE has been known to be the shittiest of the shitty when it comes to customer service, deliveries, etc.

Yea I have no idea what he was thinking not asking my opinion first. Mike really should know better. I mean, I'm a fan, he should have a mix made custom to me.

Please hop off your horse and realize that I didn't even fucking bash the thing, I just said that a PN DVD would have been a much better idea. I think that, regardless of the DVD not being pro-cammed, it also wasn't mixed well.

Never Enough me all you want, I simply gave my opinion, which I should have known was wrong on this forum.

Its not the opinion: its how it was presented.  The way yours was presented was pretty brutal and condemning, in my opinion.  Maybe take the DVD for what it is, not what it isn't.

Watched the Disc 2 last night and really enjoyed it.

Listened to Disc 3 last night as well and really enjoyed that too.

Can't wait to watch the concert(s).
A bad DT album (as if such a thing will ever exist) is 100x better than anyone elses good album.

For your informaiton, you can purchase audio verisons of each song (among other places I would imagine) at http://www.rhapsody.com/home.html.  As a member you can listen to most of the audio for free from CIM.

I am listening to ITOPE at the moment.  That whole Trevor-Rabinesque guitar groove is spretty smooth at 4:10.

Still no word from Amazon (on the special edition). The David Gilmour Gdansk concert that I ordered with it already shipped, but not the DT DVD... I'm getting worried.

EDIT: I ordered Sept. 18th, btw.

Finally shipped!

I was dissapointed with ITPoE
and that's because it was the song I was expecting more for 2 simple things that finally weren't.
1. Hear the 2 partes joined, like in the making DVD is heard, when the guitar on part 1 is fading out the bass of part 2 enters, and in the concert they stop!!!!! absolute silence between the 2 parts
2. I wanted to hear the crowd singing HAIL HAIL, and nothing is heard in that part, but music.

The rest of the DVD is great, although I have not seen the documentary, but I like the backstage tour and JM wardrobe

I think the DVD is great.  It has magic moments like "Lines in the Sand".  That solo, pretty much faithful to the original release, is simply an emotionally fueled powerhouse.  I loved ITPOE and Smedley Wilcox.  In whole, it reminded me of being at the Filmore in Detroit and yelling my fool ass off!  Great job MP and DT!

I watched the Documentay first. last night.  Fell asleep when the concert segment, but will watch tonight.  I Always go to the documentary first.  Picked up on the theme of things going wrong & the chaos aspect.  When I heard the one guy call classify himself as the Random Task guy I thought of the first Austin Powers movie.

I think that the documentary on this DVD is by far the best documentary for any of the Dream Theater DVD to date. I was a big fan of the Live At Budokan but I think that this one wins out. There's a good mix of input from everyone in the band as well as lots of great behind-the-scenes type footage. Best part of the DVD for me.

I love the DVD, but I must admit, given today's technology, I REALLY wish this thing was shot in high def. and in Dolby HD or DTS HD. 1994 is over; I felt like I was watching 5 Years in a Lifetime.

Tracked my delivery from FYE all the way from Cali. to my doorstep in Fla. When I get home it's not at the door as was written...<panic attack> !! I walk around the corner and find it sitting at someone's door up the street...I'm at 1947 and they leave it at 1927...Ugh !! Anyway, I love it !! It's raw for a reason ! To give you the feeling that you're at the show !! And it does !! Mike and DT , Thank you for another masterpiece for my collection !!

Mine came yesterday and my quick review opinion on it is..................FUCKING AWESOME!! I dig the "raw" footage element, the sound is very good IMO and overall, it is a killer compilation. So, to all of you who are nitpicking it to death, whatever, get a life.

And I forgot how absolutely intense Surrounded '07 is!!

ORIGINAL: Caught in a glass prison

I love the DVD, but I must admit, given today's technology, I REALLY wish this thing was shot in high def. and in Dolby HD or DTS HD. 1994 is over; I felt like I was watching 5 Years in a Lifetime.

Watched last night and I did enjoy the DVD, but I do agree that we need to get some HD footage.  A lot of people are now getting at least 720p TVs these days.  I've got a 1080p LCD, and after playing PS3 and watching Iron Man on Blu-Ray, it was kind of a shock to pop in the DT DVD.

I don't know maybe it was just the way it was filmed, but even compared to Budokan or Pink Floyd's Pulse DVD (which was from older 4:3 footage), the Chaos DVD looked oversaturated and kinda washed out.  Upscaling helped a bit, but it still didn't have the picture quality of Score or Budokan.

Again, I liked the DVD a lot, but I guess with the newer HD tech, I felt like I went from watching a DVD, to popping in a VHS tape.
I'd Buy That For A Dollar!

I thought it was great! I haven't seen the second Disc, but I really loved the live footage! A few of the songs did kinda suffer from less-than-stellar audio/video, but they were still great to watch. The highlights for me were the TDEN/Keyboard Solo/LITS whole bit, and the forsaken and ministry shows looked and sounded pretty damn good!

ITPOE and Schmedley Wilcox were also fucking great!

Can't wait to watch the second disc!
Get up and deconstruct.

Personally, it's not the lack of HD that bothers me. It's more so how grainy a lot of the shots are, as well as that the mix isn't up to par with Dream Theater's standard releases.

Sounds like some of you missed this part from MP himself.....

As this wasnt ONE specific show with a massive filming and pre-production budget (like Budokan and Score), the footage is indeed not as "polished" as the footage on the last 2 DVD's....
The footage is a bit more raw...everything is indeed still multi-camera shoots and looks great....just dont expect a prestine, super-lush production like Score and Budokan.

So, think more "5YIALT" and you'll get the picture....

And Kevin Shirley did mix the whole thing (in stereo and 5.1), so the audio also kicks ass!!

Budokan was filmed with HD cameras. VHS, really?  It's not that bad.  A lot of this fotoage is source footage from the venues themsleves, and a lot of the in-house video crews(Boston) do a great job I think. MP even stated they were not planning on doing a big DVD shoot this tour cycle.  I mean wouldn't you rather get to see these shows than not?  It's really not bad at all I think, some of the shows are filmed really well (Vancouver is great I think, this was a filmed show though so i think more went into this shoot) and I think it's kinda cool seeing different venues being played, as opposed to watching the same show for 3 hours.  Some of the shots are a lot different than what were used to seeing the bigger budget videos (a lot of pit shots) almost in someways gives the songs a bit more energy. (Love the balcony shots from Vancouver)  I'm enjoying the live versions of the SC songs as well. TMOLS is awesome, it's always been my least fav off the CD, and now thanks to this DVD I really like it. Never mind the fact that the documnetary is worth the price for the set alone.  I don't know, I think I guess this lived up to my expectations, if not a little beyond.  Call me the minority I guess.  I'm sure there next big DVD shoot will be in HD. The complete live AA saga shouldn't be too far off, that make for a great first live BlueRay show

After having a couple of days to digest both discs I gotta say that I really like it overall. The documentary second disc is awesome and had everything I could have wanted in it, short of dedicated tours of each members gear and what not. Though we got most of that on LAB, so no complaints there. This disc is what backstage/tour diaries should be.

Yes the footage is grainy/pixelated at times on disc 1 and there are even a couple interlace artifacts in a couple of spots. But that certainly is not a detractor. The sound quality is even. And I heard nothing in the mix/performances that would have made "me" want to choose different footage based upon what was presented here.

This set is exactly what MP said it would be. Though it blows 5YIAL out of the water.
If anything I think Mike was being a bit sheepish about describing it to us all. 'Cause it certainly exceeded my expectations and I had a good idea that it would own long before seeing the trailer.

After reading the above, the footage makes a lot more sense when compared to my other concert DVDs.

I think we're hitting another technolgy leap similar to when Met 2000 came out on DVD.  There was a DVD released, as well as a VHS without the extras.  With Blu-ray winning the HD war, I'm hoping any future concert recording get the BD treatment along with a DVD release.  I never really thought HD looked that much better than 480p, but after a few months of HD TV, video games, and Blu-rays, it does take some time getting used to standard def.

Ahhh, I missed out on that memo, that explains a lot. I have no reservations with the dvd, and I'm by no means complaining, I just didn't know what was going on with the quality at first, as I didn't know it was just a small scale thing. Hopefully their next full production show will be Blu Ray.

I will admit to NOT having read through this entire thread...So, flame me if I mention something that has already been covered.
Working 2 jobs, so I don't have a lot of Forum time these days.

I just have to say, the CD audio version (vs. the DVD version) of the "Sugar Mice" solo section of "Surrounded", literally put me in a trance, while driving to work 2 days ago. I have 9 bootlegs from this tour and THIS version is extended (in a wonderful fashion by a couple extra minutes) in phenomenal ways. IMHO. I LOVE THIS!! I am actually quite disappointed that I couldn't race home to SEE that version of it on the DVD. But, am thankful for an additional 2 versions of that song, that I didn't already have.
I saw DT in '07 and '08 and my favorite moment of the entire tour, BY FAR, was SURROUNDED '07.

Yeah, the footage quality lacks in some aspects, here and there, but, we knew that going into this, right? As a whole I was NOT disappointed with this "Limited Edition", at all. No, wait....yeah I was....I was hoping the "Super Mario/Portnoy" segment would be included.
That was my only disappointment.

To me, this is the bottom line: James LaBrie is a bad singer.

He struggles to sing in tune.  It's especially apparent in his higher register, but it even happens with lower notes as well.  He (tries to) cover it up by using an extremely wide vibrato, and evidently it fools a hell of a lot of fans (and even fellow bandmates).

There's just no escaping the fact that James is no longer a good vocalist.  They somehow manage to sweeten his voice up in the studio, but he's atrocious live.  He mispronounces words, he shrieks out high notes, and warbles like a police siren.  "But he's the voice of DT!"  Sorry, that doesn't stand up as a good argument any more (and it probably never did).

I think if DT replaced James with a singer who can actually (dare I say it?!) sing in tune, they could achieve so much more success as a band.  The four instrumentalists in Dream Theater are some of the most talented and creative that I have heard, but James just sticks out like a sore thumb to me.  For a band known for their technical excellence, I don't understand why they abide having such a mediocre vocalist.  I can't even tell you how many times I've played DT for people and heard "they're an amazing band, but I just can't stand the singer".  And unfortunately, now I agree.

LaBrie has the hardest job in the band IMO - it'd be nice if he could nail every note to every song of every show of what, 115 shows?  Not going to happen.

I think MP covered this in enough detail on the documentary.  JLB IS the voice of DT unless he or the other band members say otherwise.

You would be lucky to find anyone that could hit all these notes, and then throw them on the road and think there going to be able to do it night after night. It's insane. This stuff is just too hard to sing. Add in the fact that James is somewhere in his mid to late 40's and I gotta say he's doing a hell of a job. Compare him to other singers in the genre right now. Geoff Tate is a mess, he can't even attempt to hit half of their back catalog, songs are rerranged, keys are changed and they sound like a shell of what the song orignally was. Look at Ray Alder. Same thing, range is gone. Songs are tuned down, melodies are sung an octave lower. It's just a mess. Is James great every night, and are there times he struggles on this DVD? Yes. But I think given the body of work he needs to cover, and his age, he's doing something that not many out there could pull off. There is nobody on this planet that could sing this stuff night in and night out and not struggle, it's just not possible. Look at that Arnel guy with Journey. He has hit a skid too, the voice is something you can't predict, it gets tired, your body get's tired, you get sick. It's a tough job. Especially when your asked to hit notes that high every night.

Oh - I will agree on one point though, I don't know whats up with that really wide vibrato, that's something new he's been doing, and I don't care for that. Especially on the BF chorus and LITS.

How anyone can call JLB a 'bad singer' is complete madness. You may not like him/his voice but he can sure sing.

I really like the DVD! The concert footage is great and it reminds me of some of my favorite 80's rockumentarys with handheld cameras and shaky footage with good audio.

I'm not gonna read through everything for this but did anyone notice MP's mistake in TDEN?
It happens at about 57 seconds in to the song (not sure of the time code in the video). He just lost it for about 1 second and then kicks back in with the dbl time speed feel.

Loved it that they kept that in there! I only mention this to deflect away from all the "James didn't hit all the notes" bitching!

Mike Portnoy, you and DT have done it again! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!

The documentary side I enjoy in the same way I was into with Journey's Frontiers And Beyond documentary, which I had on VHS & DVD years ago.

JUST got mine today!! I am into Panic Attack so far. Since I knew to expect "rockumentary" type footage, I think it looks great and it sounds great, too. James sounds a lot better than people have complained about. I hope the same lighting designer does DT's next tour. The light show is just fantastic. Loving what I'm seeing so far!

THANK YOU, MIKE!!!!

As I said elsewhere about the James-thing: I think his style and the color of his voice are perfect for DT! It´s charismatic, diverse and "technical", just like the band itself. And if it wasn´t for his little "pitch-problem" very few would argue that, I´m sure. But I also believe that nobody, not even his bandmates, can deny that James is having serious problems hitting his notes in the middle range. Nobody would be bitching about a couple of bad notes in a song, but for instance: if you look up Metropolis on YouTube you´ll find a performance from the recent tour where he botches every single note (literally!) in the first verse. I do oppose fans who want to have James replaced and no disrespect to Mike or anyone else, but the most important thing that runs into singing is hitting notes! And as far as this aspect goes, you can find plenty of people at every High School doing a better job at this than James nowadays.

I'm not gonna read through everything for this but did anyone notice MP's mistake in TDEN?
It happens at about 57 seconds in to the song (not sure of the time code in the video). He just lost it for about 1 second and then kicks back in with the dbl time speed feel.

I thought (If I know what you're talking about) that MP did it on purpose...I think it sounds kinda cool.

Hmmm.... I don't think so but only MP could answer that for sure. It sounds like a mistake to me.

Why don't you cry about it. Nobody really cares what you think of James LaBrie's sining.

You know... I hear the rough spots with James, and there are some songs that just are bad, but EVERYONE has an off night. Honestly, I would say his performance on this DVD is more solid than on Budokan or Once in a Livetime. I actually think that some songs are actually a good reflection of where he is now. I don't understand the huge "JAMES SUCKS" outcry now when Budokan is MANY more times worse than this.

In addition - I think the video footage for the Medley is the best on the DVD. It looks really good!

I love this DVD and I think all the guys do a great job.

Just got my 5 disc special edition on friday and just finished watching a couple hours ago, all i gotta say......

TAKE THE TIME KICKED MY FUCKING ASS!!!!!!!

Awsome DVD Mike!!! Props for the Boston footage!!! I nearly fell outta my seat when i saw Bank of America Pavilion, Boston MA in the corner of the screen. Even though its not as good as the Vancouver footage (which i gotta say is probably the most amazing looking Dream Theater footage to date!!!) it was still awsome to relive the magic that i experienced that night.

I was in tears that night after the ending of Scarred (Those Drum Fills) and got chills watching it on the Dvd!!!!

THANK YOU MIKE!!!!!!!!!!

IIRC, Mike picked these particular shows due to the video quality of them. Not because James was having a good night or not. I saw them in Buffalo and james was ON that night. I think this DVD just picked out some of his less-on nights. He can be inconsistant from show to show, but that's kinda understandable when your instrument is a biological one.

As a businessman who built a very succesful business from nothing, I don't really understand the logic of this limited edition box set.  Not only from my point of you but from a business point of you. The 5,000 copies sold out and are on "backorder" from every major media site so their hard earned dollars are being turned away.

For some reason I thought that this album was due out on September 30th, so I went into Best Buy to buy it last Tuesday and it was sold out (along with a "for sale" sign for $33) yet they had tons of the DVD, I then had them see if any other stores have this set. There are dozens of Best Buys in my state and none of them have this set. I went on amazon and somebody's asking $149 for it and I went on ebay and people are selling this set for $80.

I don't really have the time to watch a double DVD, but I would have liked to have had the CD set to listen to in my car as Score is one of my favorite live CD's.

Can you imagine how absurd it would be if some of the great live albums like Aerosmith "Live Bootleg" or Allman Brothers Band "Fillmore East" or Jimi Hendrix "Band of Gypsies" or The Rolling Stones "Get Yer Yas Out" or The Who "Live At Leeds" or Deep Purple "Made In Japan" or any of those albums came out as a limited edition of 500 copies? It's ridiculous and I'm sure a lot more fans are dissapointed about not getting a box set than are lucky to pick this up.

It's one thing to come out with limited edition packaging(I remember REM when they released "Monster" they had a limited edition "Monster" book with the CD on the last page), but if your going to tease fans with a live CD, then I think the supply should be able to meet the demand.  So what ends up happening is some people get a cool box set, but then you end up alienating a lot of fans that have been there from day one and have spent thousands of dollars traveling to DT shows (paying big bucks for premium packages, plane tickets, etc..)

Considering people are dong all they can to cut back on spending, I would think from a business point of view you'd want to put as much green in your pocket as possible.

Anyways, if this gets me heat on this board so be it. I've traveled thousands of miles to see Dream Theater shows and I really wanted a CD set, so I just wanted to let my voice be heard.

Hopefully they can at least fill the backorders on sites like bestbuy.com, I know amazon nolonger has this available (somebody is selling their copy for $149.95)

^^Thing is, I doubt the band had much say in this. Roadrunner are well-known for their 'special editions' of albums so I would guess it was their idea to limit it to 5000. I could be wrong though.

Remember the PT 'FOABP' cd/dvd SE sets..?? They were quite limited too.

I suspect that someone looked at the sales from the previous live releases and saw that many more people were buying the dvd version than were buying the cd version, and decided to limit the numbers of cd's to press.

That may be, but nobody will ever be able to convince me that the live CD's of Score and Budokan sold less than 5,000 copies.

To me, this is the bottom line: James LaBrie is a bad singer.
I can't even tell you how many times I've played DT for people and heard "they're an amazing band, but I just can't stand the singer".

+17

And, to almost QUOTE you... I can't begin to even tell you HOW many times I have heard the same response.
It's 95% of the time, due to that upper register of his, which he just can't hold onto anymore. I feel sorry for him at times, about that.

I don't think he is a terrible vocalist, but, LIVE...., anymore, YES, he is. I don't see him lasting many more tours.

It's very discouraging, as a fan of DT to TRY and promote this band for their musical merits, only for friends and others to shoot them down because of the vocal limitations.

Again, as I've said before.....the reason LTE was such a GOOD idea. My favorite band, by far.
Myung just needs to be a part of that if and WHEN anything comes out of that camp ever again in the future.....

Too bad you feel that way Trixi...
But that's your opinion, I'm glad that many others and I still think that James has an amazing voice, even live singing for a few hours almost every day for many weeks.
Specially compared to many many other singers with such a career and at this age.
Many musicians make mistakes or have a bad day, but nobody seems to complain about that...
