I've had to deal with neighbor's barking dogs my whole life.  It's turned me off of dogs in general.   I'm not going to go into detail about how we've tried to shut them up (nothing cruel, just not nice).  We're dealing with one at my parent's house now.  It has gotten out and gone after my mom twice, bit her on the foot once (she at least had shoes on), and recently it and I had a stand-off in our driveway before the owner took it away.  My parents have talked to the owner and they are like "you need to make friends with her, and she'll be nice".  Yea right.  The beast barks its head off at a car door closing.  The owners have kept it inside more since the biting incident, but one of these days a neighborhood kid's going to lose a foot.
 
I really don't see how they can stand it barking all the time or how an owner would tune it out or get used to it, it's just so loud! 
 
I noticed the typo right away, but what I didn't notice was that it was 3 years old!  Shows you what draws my attention!

If the dog bit my mother, I'd WITHOUT QUESTION have been on the phone with the cops. If the neighbors can't be responsible with a dog that is biting, they can go to hell and lose their dog. If it confronted me on my own (or my parents' property), I'd be on the phone with the cops again. Fuck that noise. And make friends with the dog? Screw you neighbor. How about it makes friends with the pound.

My situation has gotten worse, since all of a sudden, there are more dogs barking more often. It typically starts around 4/5PM, and goes sporadically all night. However, i was up for work at 5:30 this morning and heard another one that's probably a street away from us, so now i feel like i'm hearing them no matter what time it is. I have no idea which house it's coming from, so unlike my situation w/the neighbors, i don't feel like i have any recourse.

@dparrot: sounds like your neighbors haven't a clue how to raise a dog and now the dog is out of control. It's apparent the dog is not relaxed and under constant anxiety which makes the dog pretty much lash out at anyone or anything. Making friends with it won't happen. That dog isn't out to play or be friendly. She probably doesn't walk the dog or play with the dog. I'm also sure she has never once disciplined the dog in order for it to know boundaries. I've seen dogs like that before on The Dog Whisperer and these people know their dog is crazy, but they have no clue it's because of them and the environment surrounding the dog, not because the dog is having a bad day or its mean.
 
People like that don't deserve dogs or pets for that matter in my opinion.

I take my dog for walks regularly. On one particular night I took the beast for a walk that was about three blocks. By all accounts, he should have been exhausted and thirsty when we got home. Certainly, he had relieved himself of any possible urge to urinate or defecate. However, When we got back in the house, instead of flopping down on the ground to rest, or drink a bowl full of water, he made a b-line for the back door. I let him out (we have an invisible fence) he was barking like crazy. I went out to see what the problem was. There was a fox in the back yard that he was chasing. I later came to learn that there are also coyotes, deer, chipmunks, raccoons and skunks. Most of these creatures are nocturnal, which means that the dog acts differently outdoors during the day than he does at night.

Well, I don't let the dog go out by himself after 9:30pm. This is out of respect for the neighbors and for his own safety.

Notwithstanding, if my dog smells anything at night he does bark. That's not necessarily an instinct that I want to quash!

Anyway, one possible solution to a problem like this is chocolate. Dogs love chocolate. Chocolate love dogs? Not so much.

I have all sorts of stories about this!
My mother tells me that once, she woke up at night and my father wasn't in bed, matter of fact, he wasn't in the apartment at all!
We live in a building, so she called the (I don't know what's it called - the man who opens the door, brings the mail, etc) and he said my dad passed by furious holding some lemons to throw at the neighbors dog. And he did.

My neighbors have 3 dogs that harass the entire neighborhood. My older dog is 13 and just barks at them. However, Sophie, my 1 year old Yellow Lab has a lot of fight in her. I've been training her to bark at those dogs and scare them away. And it's working. Best part? She doesn't do it to other dogs. JUST THE NEIGHBOR DOGS.
 
Also, one time, one of the dogs came into my yard when my nieces and nephews were playing outside. The dog was scaring them (albeit, my nieces and nephews are pussies), so I went out and pick up the dog and carried it to the neighbor's door and told him to get a leash/fence/something or I'm calling animal control. He tried to argue with me, but I just pointed to my house and there were toys in the front yard and no kids. I said "they're not outside anymore because your dog scared them. I'm sure he's a nice dog, but he needs to stay in your yard" For the most part, they do now. Every once in a while a little shit chuhaguahgugha (fuck those dogs) wanders over and Sophie (who is easily three-four times bigger than that shit) lets out a mean old bark and sends that thing away, tail between its legs.
