Went bowling for the 1st time in awhile yesterday. I bowled a 197 the first game back, so not too bad. I missed a spare in the 10th and couldn't get the 200... this annoyed me.

Hey glad to see this thread resurrect from the dead! I'm still throwing the orb. Matter of fact I shot my highest sanctioned series in league two weeks ago 279-268-230=777. I've shot an 800 in practice, but doesn't count if it ain't in a sanctioned league. I've also been interested in participating in some regional pro events. I went down to Ft. Smith, AR a few weeks back to see some of the pros bowl. I didn't enter, just wanted to hang out and take it all in. Very cool experience. Think it's time to start saving some money for tournaments and get my feet wet on the pro level.

The Orb? From Storm? I think my friend has the Green Orb. I'm getting my new ball on Thursday, not sure why since I'm doing pretty well with my 2D!

Cool Spare ball Govt_Property. I also have a spare ball but only use it for the 10 pin! I have no problem converting the other spares. I just flatten out my wrist and throw it with more speed.

Sorry to confuse. I was speaking an orb in general, not a certain kind of ball named The Orb. But my arsenal is all Storm. Virtual Gravity, Virtual Energy, Paradigm, Victory Road Pearl, T-Road Solid, T-Road Pearl, Hot Rod Pro Stock Pearl, Natural, and Black Ice Storm Spare. The Victory Road was the ball used for my 777 series. I won that ball from one of Storm's facebook contests. Nothing like shooting lights out with a free ball! Storm has all kinds of contests going on, which includes free equipment. Matter of fact, they've got a World Series of Bowling contest right now where you could win free equipment and their grand prize of a trip to their manufacturing plant in Utah!

Storm also made a MatchMaker Open House stop at one of my local centers a few weeks ago where you get to try out all their latest and greatest equipment. Got to meet some Storm staff, including their technical director Steve Kloemken who did some video analysis coaching on my game. I also got to meet and rub elbows with pro bowlers Tyler Jansen and 13-time PBA titlelist and Hall of Famer Randy Pedersen! Good times, good times.

Ah gotcha! So jealous, the only ball I've thrown from Storm is the Second Dimension, which has a lot of games. But I'm averaging 205 in my Friday night league and I never had that after 7 weeks, as a matter of fact my high average is only 193 which was last year. I can't wait to get my Virtual Gravity Nano Pearl. I think Pearl balls are good for me since I like something that goes a little further down the lane before hookin since I'm an inside player a la WRWjr.  Awesome for trying the Storm stuff, I'm so jealous, we wouldn't have that in my bowling center, bowling is dying in my city, it sucks! getting my Nano P on Thursday!!

I'm quite surprised with my average right now. I set a goal to book a 220 avg by the end of this season. Right now I'm at 221.48 nine weeks in. And this includes last week's dismal 557 series. So I can't complain right now. Your 2D will work for a long time if you keep it clean and maintained. If you recall my earlier post on this thread, I shot my first ever 300 game in 2006 with a old and battered Storm El Nino Wrath. A ball I bought brand new in 1999, was plugged and redrilled twice, had thousands of games on it, and after which looked like one of the ugliest bowling balls ever. The ball wasn't performing like it should so I simply started cleaning it on a regular basis and it was like a brand new ball. From that moment on I make sure to clean all my equipment after every league, tournament, and practice session. I also invested some money in a ball spinner, which isn't that expensive, and it's paid for itself many times over by doing the sanding, polishing, and cleaning yourself instead of paying money at the pro shot each time. If you're interested, go to http://www.vertexmold.com. You can also get sandpaper, Abralon and Scotch Brite pads very cheap at http://www.supergrit.com. Much cheaper than the packs you see in the pro shop and on bowling websites.

I tried the VG Nano Pearl during the MatchMaker event and it's an awesome ball. I could really get deep inside with that ball and it always recovered. Wish I had some extra cash to buy both the solid and pearl. WRW jr is known for playing the outside part of the lane, straight up the boards, not hooking it from the inside through the oil. But he can hook the ball too, but his straight game is absolutely killer. I've been told all my bowling career that straighter is greater.

I was also surprised Storm came to town. Bowling has been dying a slow death in Tulsa too. We've had two bowling centers - one in town and one in a nearby town - close over the past couple of years. Now there's only two centers in town when there used to be 4 or 5. It's a shame to see bowling decline like this. Even in youth leagues where I volunteer as a coach. Back when I bowled youth leagues, the entire center was packed. Now we're lucky to have 10 lanes filled with 4 bowlers each. Very sad. But those who are still in it have to stay with it and not get discouraged. Congrats on your new VG Nano Pearl purchase. And as they say at the bowling center, "Good luck and high scoring!"

@tst4eko, What do you use for regular cleaning following use? I have just some random spray cleaner that I use after I play, but it doesn't seem to get all the oil out. any suggestions?

Pretty much any household cleaner or degreaser can be used at home, except acetone which is too harsh. Pro shops do use acetone to clean wax pencil markings and rubber grips on balls, but it's not intended for everyday cleaning. During league and tournament play you must use a product approved by USBC. When I bought my spinner and abrasives, I also bought a quart bottle of Storm's Reacta-Clean, Reacta-Shine, and Step Two, but those aren't cheap. I bought the bottles 5 yrs ago and still using them today. But you don't have to go that route. My teammate and good buddy did some research on some of the name brand cleaners by looking at their MSDS sheets for ingredients. He used to work in the paint business and knows a chemist for the company he used to work for and asked him many questions on what is safe to use on a bowling ball. And he said quite honestly just regular rubbing alcohol can be used and will not hurt or damage the ball's reactive resin shell. Yep, the same stuff we used on urethane balls back in the day, which cost less than a dollar a bottle,  can be used on the newer reactive stuff today and is just as good if not better than the name brand stuff. Matter of fact, most of the name brand ball cleaners have denatured alcohol as their main ingredient, along with water and some food coloring. That's it! Why pay $10-30 a bottle when you can pretty much make your own for way less than that?!

In addition to cleaning after every session, it's also best to refresh the surface after so many games by doing a light sanding. This is done in between the once or twice a year full on resurfaces where you cut the surface deep with a lower grit then slowly bring it back up to its normal surface. Each ball you buy should come with an info sheet which tells you what the surface is out of the box and how often it should be cleaned, refreshed, and resurfaced. At least Storm provides this sheet with every new ball. I don't know about the other manufacturers. Storm also has a good reference page on their website on how often cleaning and maintenance should be done. Obviously they use their products as examples, but it can be used for any ball from x manufacturer. This whole process is the same fashion as maintaining an automobile. It can be tedious, but will make it last much longer over time.

I learned a long time ago that you don't need the latest and greatest equipment to score. Just keep your current arsenal cleaned and maintained and it will last you a long time. I have 9 bowling balls now and I honestly don't that many. The most I can carry at one time is 8, and the most I'll ever use on a given league night is 3 or 4. I learned early on in youth leagues to adjust with my feet, hands, and target and use the same ball as opposed to keeping everything the same and just throw a different ball. It's such a routine dragging them to the center each league night and back home. But it's nice to have options depending on what the lanes give you.

Sorry for the long explanation, but I hope that helps.

I bowl every Monday. I use a Storm Tropical Storm ball and have been inching closer to the ever elusive 200 average. Bowled a 196, 199, and 206 last night though.

Awesome bowling Puppies! It's also my dream to finish with a 200 average (I think that's what you meant). I have 205 in one league and 193 in the other (which was yesterday, shot 199 205 215) Damn left 8 10 pins. I know it's the angle but that's my weak point. I don't like changing it cuz I'm afraid of leaving tough spares.

tst4eko: My buddy is thinking about building me a ball spinner.  He's pretty smart with that stuff and he think he could do it. It'd be cheaper for me, cuz I'm in Canada, shipping would cost an arm and a leg and maybe even my balls!! (bad pun)

I tend to average less than 100 but one time my mum took myself and brother out one morning, and I was still half asleep. I busted out a 172 from nowhere. I've never come close since.

As for Daniel Reid.... well you're on the right track right!

So I go to get my new ball yesterday, at first he checked my current equipment, sanded and cleaned the balls accordingly, replaced a few inserts. This guy knows his stuff, no wonder he bowled on the PBA. Anyhow then he gets me to throw a few balls, so he could determine my speed (which I'm @ 17 mph) and my rotation, which I have about 15 which is not a lot, definately far from a power player but according to him it was sufficient (maybe he was just being nice)

Then we sit down and he gets my measurements, talk about how he'll drill it. Some of the stuff went over my head but in general I was grasping most of what he was saying/suggesting. So the fun part, we go to drill my new ball.... nothing happens. The freaking capacitor when out so the drill was dead. A technician is coming in today.  What I didn't mention is that it's a 90 minute drive from my house!!! So that freaking sucks. Oh well thankfully I'm bowling a doubles no tap tournament on the 13th, I'll get there early to get my ball then. I would of like to have it beforehand to play on that tournament, but playing a tournament with a new ball is risky. So I might just go with my Second Dimension.

That's my story, a friend is filming me tomorrow so I could see what I look like, and maybe correct some stuff. The guy was telling me yesterday that I need to open my shoulder more before the push away. Been bowling 30 years and never did that!

Sucks to hear about the the pro shop drill dying. Sucks even worse you had to drive all that way for nothing! I hope everything works out for you soon. I love talking shop with the pro shop folks. As you can already tell, I'm a hard core bowling geek. I love talking pin placement, PAP, CG, center of grip, pin buffer, mass bias, the whole nine yards! I'm not sure who your pro shop guy is, but based on what you mentioned above, he seems like he's one of the better ones. The good ones will actually go watch you throw a few shots, get an idea of your speed, rotation, trajectory, and such. Unfortunately there are some pro shop folks out there who don't bother with that and just drill what they think works and never take any of your input. My pro shop lady is awesome and she's been drilling my equipment for years. She not in the USBC and Oklahoma bowling hall of fames for nothing. She's top notch and knows what she's doing. But she also takes the extra time, care, and effort to evaluate each person's game to give her advice on what works best for the bowler, not the other way around.

Throwing a brand new ball for the first time in league or tournament play can be risky. However, you'll still get a few minutes of practice before each session, so take advantage of it with the new ball and see how it will roll. You don't necessarily have to use it in play, but if the ball gives you a good look and feel, might as well give it a shot and see what it will do. You're already familiar enough with your older equipment and know that it's going to do. The new ball is always the question mark until you see it roll down the lane.

Video analysis is always a great tool. Nothing like seeing your game on video to give you a different perspective of your game. I've been bowling over 20 years and even I continue to get amazed with the things I can improve on. By the way, the Storm video analysis I had done that I told you about earlier is posted online. Feel free to check it out if you'd like. http://storm.seeyourgame....tsplash.asp?STB2381451

Dude your form is awesome. I taped myself this weekend and from what I saw, wow I have a LOT to work on. However, baby steps, right now I'm scoring the best I've ever done so I don't want to change too much right away. One of my favourite styles is Rhino Page, I'd like to come close to what he's doing. So maybe it could be a goal of mine! I actually also ordered his jersey, I love it.

Yeah I'll try it in practice and see how it does, however there seems to be a problem with the motor and he might not have his machine back in time. I'm looking forward to league tomorrow. Thanks for the good luck, however it's a small tournament. I bowled with the ol' man last time and he shot 300 the last game (remember it's no tap). It was nice since his average is in the 150s! It made us cash in 4th place!

Thanks. Steve Kloempken's advice about my 3rd step drift to the left is an issue I've been working on. I don't drift now and I think that helped me shoot 777 three weeks ago. It's also helped with my balance at the line. I tried his advice on getting my left arm out more for balance, but that actually throws me more off balance, so I chose to not bother with that cause the way I do it now is just fine for me. Rhino's got good game. He's more of a power player, but very simple approach. Norm Duke has the best approach in my opinion, and he's the most versatile bowler on tour. He can play up the boards or really swing it out and back. Matter of fact, he just released a DVD called "Learn to Bowl Competitively." Most bowling videos go over the very basics of how to bowl, but Norm takes it to higher level for league and tournament bowlers like us. I bought that DVD the moment I heard of it and that has really helped my game too, especially with my timing. For some reason, 9-pin no tap tournaments and I don't get along, lol. I've never bowled good in any of those. I think it's more of a mental thing with me. I'm not thinking 9 or better, I'm thinking strike, but I always seem to get 8 split or worse. It's pathetic how I bowl in those, so I've chosen to stick with the regular tournaments. But for guys like your teammate with a low average shooting 300 plus handicap, you can't go wrong with that. And I should know better bowling those kinds of tournaments because the lower average bowlers always have the advantage when they go off the sheet. I'm a 220 avg bowler, so I'm already bowling scratch, pretty much. If I'm not on my game from first to last frame, I have no chance. I've only cashed in one tournament so far a couple years ago. Wasn't much, but I felt pretty damn good that I did that all myself considering how many good bowlers competed. Things like that only make me want to get better.

I hear ya for the 9 pin tournament, I get them all the time in league. I might miss one a game. (meaning all 9s or strikes) sometimes I'll leave the bucket, or the 6-10 or whatever. In the tournament, I can't string strikes, I'll get maybe 3-4, then leave an 8 count, then maybe a double, then a split wtf!!!! Anyhow we'll see. I have scored well however. It helps that my dad has a 165 avg.

Funny thing about the Duke video. I ordered it for xmas (my gf gave me the money so it's a XMAS gift). I'm suppose to get it very soon, unfortunately I'll have to wait till Xmas to get it haha

Bad night yesterday, 576. Only one turkey, missed 2 10 pins and a single pin. Both lanes were quite different. It took me a game to figure this out. I put more hand and less speed on the lane that was slicker, broke my wirst and played the other dryer lane faster. I know maybe I should of moved on the approach but I was hitting the pocket 8.5 out of 10 times I'd say.

Hey folks, share your league experiences?

Oh yeah, I made my team won twice yesterday being the anchor. I left a washout in the 2nd game and had to convert it in the 10, which I did). In the 3rd game I need to fill in 20 to tie. Well that's where I got my turkey!

                                          How did that go?

I practiced 4 games on Friday afternoon, averaged a decent 219. Then in league the same night, I shot a crappy 538, thank God I finished the last game with 7 in a row, it would of been my first 4xx series in a few years! They let a whole bunch of kids do open bowling on our lanes, lack of experience from new staff. I saw footsteps on the lanes, so yeah you could imagine, both lanes were night and day, I was using 2 different balls on 2 lanes and that's how I finished with 7 bagger. I shot a video in the afternoon, I'm a little hesitant of putting it on here even though it only shows my ball trajectory.

Yesterday, got my new ball! It was that no tap tourny. Out of the box my first game I shot 300! 9 real strikes. We switched pair of lanes every game we bowled. I didn't so well the other games but still averaged 248 for 4 games. I don't think we cashed as my dad had trouble, I'll find out this week. Anyhow can't wait to throw this new rock down the lane tomorrow night in my house!

Sorry I forgot to post it here. Castouts League wk 11: 216-219-243=678. 226 avg tonight, 222.58 avg overall. Team won 3 of 4. I also bowled colorama last night and shot 653, got a lot of ticket shots called and won the majority of them including some scratch pot money. I almost broke even and had a good time.

Congrats on your no tap 300. Seems like the new ball is working very well. Just make sure to clean it, along with the rest of your equipment, on a regular basis. Just doing a simple clean after each session will do wonders in the long run. Never clean it before bowling a session. Believe it or not, there are some people who swear by cleaning the ball before bowling league, but that defeats the purpose of cleaning out the oil after league is done, by the time the next session comes around, any oil on the ball from last week will have already absorbed into the coverstock, making it harder to clean for the next session. So always clean after the session. I usually clean my stuff on the spinner when I get home, but you can even clean it in the center right after you're done with a small spray cleaner and towel. Since league is over, you can use any cleaner you want instead of something that must be USBC approved during league play.

Yeah I always clean my balls now after league. I'm tempted to try simply rubbing alcohol. Wow 222 avg keep it up, I'm down to 202 now.  Anyhow here's a video of me shooting the 2nd Dimension. I'll post another video soon with my form and my Nano Pearl!

Nice vid. From what I can see, you have good footwork. And I noticed we both use the same shoes (Dynoroos/3G). Those things are awesome. They've lasted longer than any Dexter's I've had in years past.

Rubbing alcohol will work just fine. Like I said before you don't need any name brand or expensive stuff from the manufacturers. Rubbing alcohol will also not alter the surface of your equipment, solid or pearl. I have noticed over time any equipment you use on the lanes will eventually alter its own surface. I found out from some guys at Storm that if no surface alteration is ever done, it ends up being about 800 grit. So that means any pearl ball, which is usually 1500 grit polished surface, can wear down to 800 grit on the track over time if not kept up. But your mileage may vary.

I had to strike out in the 10th frame of last game to shoot 700. I'm subbing on a friend's team in his league tomorrow night. Yeah I love those shoes, I just need to replace the shoelace and they'll be good as new! Thanks for the comments on the video.

It's always night to get a 700! On Tuesday with my new ball I shot a 595 (214-207-174). Average went up a pin from 193 to 194. Anxious for league tomorrow night! I'm not too sure about the new ball, it's aggressive and all but so far I seem to be able to predict the trajectory of my Second Dimension better, I know it's early though. I guess it's too early to judge yet, it always takes me a while to get used to new equipment.

Well looks like I'm getting used to the new ball, on Tuesday night my last 2 nights were 630 and 623, my averaged went up from 194 to 196. On Friday I bowled a 661 and avg went up from 200 to 202.

Good deal with the new orb. Glad you're liking it. Last week was an epic fail for me in league. I didn't break 500, that's how bad it was. The shot was messed up big time. I didn't figure them out until the 3rd game and by then it was too late. So just in one night my avg dropped 5 pins to 218. Will take some work to get it back over 220, starting tonight.

Storm Bowling posted the story of the 899 bowler with a Frantic on their facebook page. Very cool indeed. I'd be happy with any sanctioned 800 series.

And of course I did the typical over-correction of throwing the ball too wide after pulling it on the 11th ball, went very light and left a 2 pin. Then in the 3rd game I was going 290 pace in the first 5 frames for my first ever 800 series, but left the 4-7 in the 6th, then an open in the 7th which died a horrible death.

That Victory Road is a damn good ball. It was the first ball out of the bag until recently, but I think I'll go back to making it my go to ball. It's never let me down.

One I vagely remember, the Storm Lightning Flash. The other ball, however, is my unicorn, my Eleanor (Gone in Sixty Seconds reference), a Storm El Nino Wrath! Both were made in '99 and both were 15 lbs! I scooped those up right away. I bought a brand new 16 lb Wrath back in '99. Several years and several thousands of games later in the summer of 2006, that same beat up ball helped me roll my first ever 300 game. Not just any 300 game, and not only was it league sanctioned, but all 12 strikes were flush solid in the pocket, no lucky breaks. I've always been a perfectionist. But I can say with certainly that July 9, 2006 I was truly "perfect." I retired the ball not long after that to revamp my entire arsenal to 15 lbs. Seeing that Wrath in the pro shop the other day was like a sight for sore eyes. I'm having both balls plugged and drilled now. I can't wait to be reunited with my Eleanor!
