Rescued a stray cat
Monday, March 17, 2008 6:04 PM
( permalink)
To make a long story short, I found this cat outside a bar in Edgerton. It was really beat up and very skinny, but somehow was very friendly. I ended up taking it home, and to the vet. She has a very large wound on her side and her eyes were infected. Also has/had fleas and ear mites. She is doing very well after only a couple of days. Eating well and drinking water. She will go back to the vet in another week and a half to check progress. Here are some pics 2 days after we got her and after the vet trip. She only weighed 5lbs 3oz at the vet on Sat. This was taken last night, after being home for only 3 days, she is playing with a bag of catnip that Bill got her :D I will post more pics as she recovers.

You're a hero. I'm not a big cat guy (partly due to being allergic to them ), but you did something most people wouldn't have, and it saved that animal's life. Good going!

Props to you, taking in a stray or an animal that has been abused or hurt and abandoned is a wonderful thing. You will not regret it. Once that cat trusts you, she will be so thankful. It looks like she'll be a sweetheart of a cat once things heal up :)

You rule, dude! Any idea where the wounds came from? They look kinda significant in that first pic. I love how she's only colored at the ends.

That's kinda how I ended up being a cat owner. I never grew up with cats, always dogs. Several months ago, a friend of mine came to worship band practice with this little scrawny kitten that he had found in the parking lot of Steak & Shake. We were practicing and this little guy was crawling up me, as I was playing drums. At the end of practice, everyone was like "We've got too many cats now, My wife wouldn't let me, I'm allergic, etc." So, I said I'd take it home and, if we didn't keep it (if my wife said no), we'd find a home for it. Once Steph saw those big, blue eyes and heard that little pu-u-u-u-rrr cranking, it was all over.
Faith is not a virtue. Faith is gullibility. It’s evidence that determines whether or not your perception of reality is reasonable and in conjunction with the world as it is. -Matt Dillahunty

Joeclark you rule. My beautiful cat that I had for 13 years passed away suddenly last week and I have been so heartbroken, she was like a daughter to me. I'm still trying to come to terms with things. I get her ashes back this week so soon she will be home for good. Reading your post has made me realize that life goes on and there are always animals in need. My cat had a very easy and comfortable life, but there are so many other animals in the world that are treated cruelly and are neglected and mistreated. My hat is off to you my friend, now I need to go get a kleenex and wipe my eyes. OK, so the question is what are you going to name her???????????????

Good luck with the cat. My mom took in a stray once that was a maine coon (sp?) mix, and he ended up having some bizarre infection in his leg that would cause the skin to split open and expose the muscle underneath, an open wound the size of a hand. It would heal up nicely and then blow up...happened a couple times, then he recovered. I think it had something to do with a dog bite, all it takes is a weakened immune system and bacteria deep in the tissue. As long as you keep up with this cat's infection, shouldn't be too serious. Again, good luck.

My mother did the same. Let a stray cat into her home and took care of him. Since then he's become a whole new cat. Before that he was skinny, losing fur and just a complete mess! Now he's a strong, proud and beautiful cat who has become a big hit with the ladies. Good for him

Still not sure what the large wound is from. I figure it was a bite of some kind that probably was infected at some point, and bubbled up like that. Her eyes are looking a lot better now, but I still think she will have some permanent vision loss. We have not come up with a name yet, so any suggestions will be appreciated. I will definitely be getting her fixed soon. She goes back to the vet in 2 weeks, and then we will run blood tests, etc to make sure she doesnt have feline leukemia or FIDS. Thank you for all the kind words, it has been a very fun experience so far

Very noble of you Joe. Being a cat lover, I have 2 strays running aorund the condos I live in. The Condo President figured out that I was feeding them and his wife damn near beat my sliding glass door in while knocking on it to tell me to stop feeding them because it will cause them to walk all over the cars, and the fact that she has a convertable. I told her: "First off, dont ever fuckin beat on my glass door again like you just did when you could clearly see I was sitting about 10 feet away. Also, me feeding the cats will NOT suddenly cause them to walk on your car, cat are natural climbers, they have already been walking on the cars! I have found paw prints on MY car since early last year!" It is Winter outside, we just has a blizzard, and I refuse to let these cats starve!
