Roland TD-20s V- Pro (My new gear's almost here!) - Sunday, March 09, 2008 4:10 PM

Anybody have one of these? Mine's being delivered Wednesday.
3 things made this a reality:
1) Tons of research (after owning a TD-6SW for a few months...meh...
2) Playing it in the store (The sound, the feel....oh my god!!!!!!!)
3) Getting it for 1/2 off list price (that's another story on it's own)

This will be a recording musician's dream! I can send stereo or individual tracks, wet, dry or both.
I've been getting ready to record. so I picked up a Line6 Tuneport UX2 (for guitar, vox, and I have even used it for drums with the TD-6SW).

Anybody have a TD20? Wanna share your experiences?

Holy shiiiet. The best I've played on is a TD12 and I thought that felt awesome. I've only read about the TD20 but it's one hell of a brain. The kit is pretty sweet too I'm really jealous right now
Here he comes. Here comes John Wayne. "I'm not going to cry about my Pa. I'm going to build an airport... Put my name on it." Why, Michael? So you can fly away from your feelings?

I've played it at a Guitar Center once.
Very fun to play, and has a rebound that makes way easier to play than acoustic drums.
Enjoy!

Tbh, even the TD-20 doesn't sound that great. It might fool the average listener, but I've never heard a brain that sounds real.

The only thing I've heard off electric kits that genuinely sounds real is kits running through BFD or DFH. That's the kind of sound I'd be expecting forking out thousands for a TD-20.

I've had the TD-20 for two years and I love it. I've barely scratched the surface of what the brain can do, every time I play it's a new adventure. It handles the double bass pedals great (DW-5000). I just started using the Stewart Copeland signature sticks on it and they by far have the best feel on these mesh heads. The only downside is the ride, I just can't get it right. Hell, Neil Peart just started using the TD-20 on the S&A tour and if it's good enough for him......... Have fun with it, I've never regretted buying it.
Neil is Neil, and he probably hates you!!

Please post your experiences with it once you have it.  I'm looking at buying a TD20 myself, though it may not happen this year.  I played on one at Guitar Center and thought it was a blast.  Didn't have enough time to play with any settings, though.

You can't replace the feel and sound of a real kit, but something like this would make recording easy and also allow me to practice at any hour of the day without pissing anyone off.  A nice bonus.
I'm addicted to placebos.

the biggest trick I've noticed with the ride is which way the ride is facing you, because (if I recall correctly) the triggers aren't fully circular.

So you have to slowly turn the cynbol to find the full stretch of the triggers so it can be facing where you sit rather than slumped a bit in any direction which can cause you to miss the trigger all together.

Nope, but I've tried it at my local GC and the feeling was great! the mesh pads makes things really easy.

I live in an apartment and due to the fact that we can't make too much noise I was thinking on getting a TD-12 or TD-20, but they are too $$$!

How did you get half the price??? are you a drug dealer with all the sweet hook ups and everything???

I had a V-Pro kit with the TD-10 brain. Best practice kit I ever owned. Didn't like gigging with it, though.

First off, congrats on the purchase!  TD-20 = very cool!  Half-price = even better.  There's one at the GC where I live and they're discounting it by half of the list (something like $3300).

I bought a TD10 with the TDW-1 card last week and it arrived Friday.  Definite improvement over my TD6 with the better samples and the positional sensing, though the latter takes some getting used to, especially because I have only one mesh pad - the rest are PD-7's, which makes for a small target.

I can see how TD6 owners wouldn't realize a huge difference in the TD10 without the expansion card...yeah, you have the extensive editing on the 10, but it'd be on old samples.

After spending about 4 hours rehearsing with one band - all the while trying to dial in one kit that I liked - I gigged with my TD10 on Saturday...what I found was that my Roland V-Drums amp is WAY better than any other amp I've tried.  To add some oomph, my band had me add another speaker cabinet, and while I had plenty of volume, I'm not sure the sound was better.  My only concern was that maybe the toms were getting lost in the overall band sound (the low toms certainly were), but those who came by after our set had nothing but nice things to say about our sound (guessing they weren't listening to the toms, but whatever).

Anyway, ENJOY that TD20!

How did you get half the price???

Price match + discount promo. Once in a lifetime kinda deal.
I am really looking forward to being able to play these
The TD--6 is so mechanical and lifeless...I think I'm in for a sensory overload

I now have the TDW20 expansion installed and love it even more!
There is so much in the brain, all the mixing, effects, compression, eq...I wish I knew how to use that stuff...

Anyone else get one of these since last year?

The V Drum forums are really good place for info, http://www.vdrums.com/forum/. I have the latest TD12 and I'm keen t to try out Vex packs, just haven't got around to it yet, but I really want to hear the difference.
