I want to be excited, but since I live in the Southeast, I can't let myself until I see where the tour will be going...

I will not miss this show. It's not everyday we see Opeth and Dream Theater in the same night. I just hope Opeth get a good amount of time to play.

ORIGINAL: 0rion From what I understand, Opeth's recent surge in popularity has ended up netting them a lot of douchebag fans who even Mikael has had to admonish from time to time. Take anything from that forum with a grain of salt... and anyone who has not heard Opeth, please disregard the fans who are critical of DT before hearing Opeth's music. DT and Opeth really DO fall over a large overlapping audience and with good reason. If you can deal with the growling vocal parts (and they do grow on you once you see how he uses them to provide a certain texture to the song), then you'll have found yet another source of musical beauty as rich as DT or any other epic prog/metal band. Great post. I tried going to the Opeth forums to stay updated on news for the upcoming album, but I quickly noticed that group of fans you mentioned. I'm glad Opeth is gaining popularity, and if those individuals want to listen to the band, that is great. But I can't handle the maturity level of some of those posts. Those who are unfamiliar with Opeth, don't let some of those posts discourage you from getting into the band. Love or hate the growls, Mikael is a brilliant musician, and I am yet to play Damnation for somebody who didn't just love it. Who else has been designing some ideal setlists? This tour is going to be insane.

I've listened to some Opeth clips but don't really know the music. I could never get into the growling, but the music sounds really good. I might buy 1 CD and see what it sounds like in its entirety. Which one would you guys recommend?

Its an entirely mellow and beautiful album with all clean singing. "In My Time of Need" and "Windowpane" are my two favorites from that one. If you're looking to give the growling a chance, check out the song "Harlequin Forest" from the album Ghost Reveries which is a heavy song with mostly clean vocals throughout the beginning and then a little growling comes in. I couldn't get into the growling either until I heard that song and I was an immediate convert. Now I love almost everything they've done

You would think Opeth would get more than 40 minutes though. That's what they got on Gigantour. Also, like Porcupine Tree, they are not that much more unknown then Dream Theater. Tons of Metal fans know who Opeth is but not DT. Hopefully, its kind of close to a double-whammy, rather than what's going on right now with Symphony X opening in Europe

A 75-90 minute slot is ideal for Opeth, give them a chance to pull out their best. Average an Opeth tune to 10 mins, we should get about 6-8 songs. To me, IMHO, nothing really is perfect because Peter was my favorite member and now he's gone. Either way, Opeth is still a band I love and respect, and this tour is just something I have been aching for.

I feel like its a little watered down and like the new lineup really has something to prove. At the same time it seems 90% Mikael, so we'll see how much changes in the next album. I have a feeling it will be alright. :)

Wow, Finally, a good opening band/double headliner for DT. I don't think I've ever seen 1 good band paired with DT (and this includes: Spocks Beard w/Neal, Satch, Kings X, every other band on Gigantour, Into Eternity, and Redemption), so this is a can't resist concert! It seems that there's an implication that opeth is better than Megadeth here. There should be drug testing on this forum!

The've got to play The Baying of the Hounds. They opened with that song in the pitch darkness at House of Blues Hollywood, and melted my face. I had pushed my way up to the front of the crowd and it's my favorite song, so you can imagine it made my day... I hope that DT isn't seated during that tour. They already did one seated one, why can't they do a mix of pit/seated on the next? :)

I guess Opeth will get a good set. I was thinking about it the other day... Last North American tour was from 7:00 to 11:00. That means 4 hours. Let's say they get the same time for their show... What would be perfect is, in my opinion: Opeth - 7:00 to 8:15 (75 min, that means like 7 or 8 songs) DT stage set up - 8:15 to 8:40 (25 min, like in the first tour) Dream Theater - 8:40 to 11:00 (2 hours and 20 min, which means a fucking great DT show) And like other people said Opeth coming on stage with Dream Theater would be a fucking blast! Especially, like mentionned, for The Dark Eternal Night. But I think that the idea of them playing 1 Opeth song and 1 DT song would be GREAT (the extra 20 min on the DT show would fit perfectly then).

Mike's post says that Opeth will be "supporting" them, so perhaps this is unlikely. Just seeing both bands in the same night will be enough! Two of my favorite bands for sure!!!! Of course because they both play numerous long songs, some will be omitted due to time constraints. I thought the last bill with Into Eternity, Redemption, & DT was too good to top. Oops, I was dead wrong!!!!!!!! Progressive death metal heaven awaits. See you there.

ORIGINAL: DoctorX I used to post on UltimateMetal. I pretty much gave up on that place. It's full of obscurist snobs, who have contempt for all things non-metal. There's also strong currents of nihilism, social Darwinism, eugenics, racism, misogyny, homophobia, and fascism in most of the forums on that board. It's just not ignorant or closed-minded enough for me. Come now don't go associating something as wonderful as social Darwinism with all that other stuff. ;) ORIGINAL: senor_valasco ORIGINAL: 0rion ORIGINAL: senor_valasco Fuckin A!!!!! Opeth and DT!!! How much better can it get??!!!!! Um, they could have a festival show that's two days long with 4 headlining bands- Porcupine Tree, Transatlantic, Opeth, and Dream Theater. Then fill all the other spots with awesome bands.... Spock's Beard with Neal Morse, Rush, etc. That's how much better it could get! /it'll never happen Fixed. Well played, sir. Well played. /but Muse can open for Rush //with a 3 hour set

Well here I sit listening to GR. I must admit that a part of me will be a little scared to attend this show. I'm not 18 and I don't want anything to do with moshing. I'm also a little nervous about Opeth's fan base. I really don't quite know what to expect. I'll probably take my chances and attend the show because I really want to see these bands together....but at the first hint of unrest in the crowd I'll be outta there. Hopefully that won't happen.

LOL @ unrest in the crowd... The Opeth fanbase isn't like the Slayer or Pantera fanbase. They share members, but it's a much different emotion. They won't be dead drunk, tearing chairs out and beating up old ladies and knifing each other in the pit (not that they do that at Pantera or Slayer shows, just sayin' ). At an Opeth show, if you're not deep in the crowd of a General Admission venue, then you aren't in ANY danger of being squished or harmed. Once you get into the crowd though, as at any concert, expect to be squished. The actual moshing factor is minimal- usually there are only a few douchebags jumping around bashing into each other while everyone else is just trying to watch. The crowd energy is phenomenal though, as everyone there knows the Opeth songs as well as DT fans know the DT songs. There's a headbanging/metal/groove/buildup element that DT songs don't always have. I've had a better time squished at the front of a crowd at an Opeth show than I have at any other single concert I've been to, second only to being 1 foot away from JP when I was sitting front/center for DT. The Opeth crowd just has this neat combination of metal-energy and progressive respect/admiration. Hope I don't get proven wrong, but I've been to 5 Opeth shows and it's always been the same. Plus, DT is almost always seated these days... I really hope that they have a pit though.

In the words of Cypress Hill "When the shit goes down, you'd better be ready!!" Things got friggin wild at Opeth at London Roundhouse last year. But it was great. You have to remember that (especially in the UK) when it goes off, people do look out for each other, and will give you a hand if you're in trouble. And it reeeaaalllly goes off in the UK!! You'll be fine!

I just went to my first Opeth show in March. I'm no spring chicken either, which is why I headed for the balcony! I don't think you are going to want to get down close. That shit looked pretty intense. But you'll be able to find a spot where you can comfortably watch the band. And don't worry about the fan base; there are tools at every metal show. I didn't find the Opeth show to be any more dangerous. Well, just the fuckstains who think that growling OPETH!!! at the top of their lungs every eight seconds is a good idea. Damn that shit got annoying real quick!

Damn. All three posts responding to mine; Orion, Nechtology, and my bud DTD, were trying to make me feel a little more at ease about attending this show but you all confirmed that it can get pretty nasty. Man I don't know if I'm up for that at my age. I guess I'll closely watch reports of shows before Detroit and if there's any trouble at any of them I'll just sit this one out. If I do decide to go I'll look for balcony seats only.

A walker...LOL. Not quite. I'm 6' 3" @ 205 and I lift 5 days a week so I can handle myself just fine. What I'm saying is that I should be smart enough by now to avoid situations where there might be trouble. I've had great experiences at every DT show I've ever been to. No trouble at all. But I've never been to a 'Death metal show' so I don't know what I'm in store for. I really think seated venues is the answer.

emtee: Dude, seriously, you'll be fine. Don't miss DT and Opeth together. It should be an interesting mix of fans, to say the least. The Opeth show I went to in March was an Evening With show, so people were there for Opeth and Opeth only. I had absolutely no issues with anyone, and I don't look like someone who's into Opeth, I promise you that! Just find a place where you can be comfortable (whatever that means for you) and see the stage, and you're golden. And since Opeth will be supporting DT, you just may get to see them in a seated venue. Don't miss this show!

the moshing is a given at a lot of shows. I've learned to watch at the back, but it really sucks for people who might want to be there but don't wish to be in the middle of it.

Yeah man... dont worry... the most pit (IF there's one at all, because venues will be seated) wont extend throughout the whole venue, so I'm sure you'll find a spot where it doesn't reach. Or... just follow the line where all the old people's at

At Opeth shows it's hard to find a spot where the Pit DOES reach. Like I said it's only ever been a few guys jumping around while everyone else is fixated on the stage, rocking out with one another in the spirit of metal. :) I've always been a little disappointed when Opeth shows were fully seated, but not so much for DT shows.

I'm 6'0" and 170lbs and I've seen some brutal moshpits, and I've never really had any problems. Gotten a few bruises and scrapes but nothing bad. I seriously doubt though that there will be much moshing at an Opeth concert, that seems more like something people would pay attention too. I cant wait for this show!

Ya same here. 6'4" and I've never, ever had a problem in a pit. I can see where it would not be nearly as fun if I were a lot shorter. For a while I never understood why some of my friends didn't like going into the pit, and then I realized it was all the smaller guys. :P One of my favorite things about pits is the crowd surfers. I grab them and toss them at the security folks. Once I actually got some poor kid airborn and there was no one to catch him. If you're reading this..... I'm not sorry. You deserved it. Don't kick people's heads anymore.

I actually sorta had the same concerns as emtee, but mine are because I'm female and hate crowds regardless. But there is no way I'm missing this show, so I'm just staying on top of when the actual dates/venues will be announced, and pick the venue I'd like to go to. It must be seated, just so people have their assigned areas. No way I'll be sitting, though. Of course, since I'm pretty darn sure DT will be at mostly seated venues, now this tour leg will be 100% general admission. Just to spite me =P

Wow, your sarcasm makes you edgy and e-intimidating. 1. If the surfer continues on top of the crowd, he eventually falls through as people try to avoid having to hold him up. Once there are only 1-2 people left holding him up, they bail, and the kid drops like a rock straight onto the concrete. I've seen kids get knocked unconscious and then trampled. I've also picked them up, and carried them out of the pit because no one else would. Tossing them to the security guards is a favor to myself and everyone else. They don't get kicked out of the venue, they almost always get ushered right back into the pit. 2. I get tired of having to constantly watch behind me for crowdsurfers because they invariably end up kicking me in the head with their big ass boots which they probably bought at Hot Topic for way too much money. I'm a lot taller than most of the people there and I get the worst of it being as my head sticks out above everyone else's. That's annoying when I'm trying to enjoy a band that I paid to see. Like most people I don't react well to sharp blows to the skull. 3. Yea, I am. And yea, it is a bit fun tossing the douchenozzles. Maybe you're one of them? I'm still not sorry. Have a nice one.

Most of them are just trying to have fun, and they try and keep their feet up when they're being passed along. There's really no need to fuck with them as there's not too many people who do it anyway, and most of them are probably a lot younger than you. I'm not exactly speaking from experiance(only did it once), but from what I've seen rarely do they hurt anybody.

I dunno, I've had a different experience. It's the ones that come from behind that get me... also the rubber on the soles of shoes pulls hair like none other. I don't think they're significantly younger, as I'm only 24 and most of them are 18-20 or so. And I doubt that many of them went to the School of Crowd Surfing Etiquette wherein one learns how to properly elevate the feet so as not to disturb fellow concert goers... For the record, I also clasp my hands together and boost them up onto the crowd when they ask. When I launch them, I get to stick them on some trajectory that places them well away from where I'm trying to enjoy the show. Usually about 15 minutes later they've managed to squirm their way through the crowd to where I am and they tap my shoulder and ask again.

I'm with Orion on this one. I personally HATE crowd surfers. Here I am, towards the front of the crowd, trying to watch the band and *BAM* some kids ass gets thrown ontop of my head! It's rediculous, it gets to the point where I cant even watch the show because i'm constatly getting someone thrown on me, or they kick me in the head! There's a huge problem with it at the venues around me, its just constant. I was at a show this summer and was front row, it would have been awesome except that I couldnt even watch the show because as soon as I passed one crowd surfer to the security gaurds, anotherone landed on me! It was freaking non stop! I got sick of it and gave up my front row spot to go stand in the back so I could even see! I'm not the only one in the area that's getting pissed about it though, I kept finding shoes in the pit durring the night. I then noticed that when some idiot started crowd surfing, people in the crowd were tearing their shoes off, throwing them on the floor, and then passing the kid to the security gaurds... hahahaha! They probably wont be surfing again!

I'm not TOTALLY against it, I know they're having a great time and it's part of being at a concert, but at the same time it's annoying when they come crashing down on the back of my head or kick me. That's why I help them up when they ask, and toss their asses out when they land on me. :P

I was at a Gwar show when a crowd-surfer kicked the back of my head. I had to block the "blood" from the onstage decapitation spurting in my face and the steel-toe boots of the jackass behind me. I couldn't move as I was pinned at the rail (Front and Centre). The guards were so busy puching the surfers back on the sides that this tool fell over my head and 6 feet straight down onto the floor (over the barrier) No one saw until the lead singer 'pissed' on the security guard's head to get his attention. I'll help the person up if they fall, but if they kick my head.... Chris_2112 hates crowd surfers moreso than I do. During Gigantour, people tried to rush the stage at the start of DT's set to get a good spot for Megadeth. He required some MIGHTY strong painkillers.
