ORIGINAL: Ragutis I'd assume this would most likely be a co-headline deal, no? Some folks are sounding like they think Opeth will be opening. I think they're bigger than that, even here in the States. Well MP said Opeth will be their special guests, so...

pleasecometostlouis.pleasecometostlouis.pleasecometostlouis.pleasecometostlouis! If I get to see DT and Opeth here in St. Louis, I could die a happy man! I missed my chance to see DT in KC and after I saw Opeth here in 06 during the Ghost Reveries tour, they said they'd be back in February.....I've been patiently waiting ever since I guess if there's no St Louis show, I WILL be making a road trip this time. This show is too great to miss. The ONLY way it could get better would be the addition of PT.

ORIGINAL: Portnoy Yes it's pretty certain that Opeth will be our Special Guests for our next North American leg in April/May of next year... It's pretty fucked up that Roadrunner would have announced this yet as it's waaaaay premature to have said anything....but I guess that is the nature of the internet.... Oh well... Pretty cool tour though, huh?! More info to come...but we are MANNNNY months away from that...so forget you read about this and act excited next year when we "officially" announce it... MP Yeah, sorry about that, it was in my weekly college radio email so I didn't feel like it was going to be "secret" for very long, I'm sure someone would've said it before me or blabbermouth would've picked it up.

This is more then a dream come true for me! I discovered both bands on the same day, with their heaviest albums (train of Thought, Deliverence) then getting their classic albums next (Images and Words, Blackwater Park) and seing them both for the first time within weeks of each other (March of last year). I'll be praying every day until the tour dates are announced that there will be a MN date.

There's nothing more beautiful then Opeth's redition of Rocky Mountiian High. As for Baby Please Don't Go.......Nothing can beat the Zappa/Lennon version.

Oh, my. How do I convince the wife that I need to see multiple shows on this tour?

Well, there's plenty Opeth on Youtube to check out and of course their MySpace and their Roadrunner page. For albums, my favorites are Blackwater Park, Damnation (no grunts) and Ghost Reveries.

Sorry to be a "downer" but this is bad news for me! I am NOT into Opeth AT ALL ......I was hoping for a cool opener like Circus Maximus or even Spocks Beard. Oh well, I'll just be arriving at my usual 4-5 shows later on this tour.

Co-headlining or not? Cause I think Opeth is way to big to be the opener for DT! CHEERZ!

Nobody can accuse DT of getting soft as they age. Seems they keep getting heavier and heavier and playing with heavier bands. I never thought I would see the day DT would tour with a death metal band

I have to say... if Opeth has 1.5 hour setlist, then I'll be happy. Shorter, I won't be so happy.

I wonder what Sargon the Terrible has to say about this...Austin?

Now that this news is official, how would you like the show set up. Personally, I love opeth. They are probably my 4 or 5 favorite band. However, I would still want DT to headline every show. Having Mikael Åkerfeldt and James LaBrie sing TDEN would be sweet. It would be nice to get 2 hours from each band. Does this mean a new Opeth album will be out soon?

ORIGINAL: Noldor look here what opeth fans said: http://www.ultimatemetal.com/forum/opeth/337228-opeth-will-open-dream-theater-america-april-may-2008-a.html very funny thread, there are some really stupid reactions and posts! From what I understand, Opeth's recent surge in popularity has ended up netting them a lot of douchebag fans who even Mikael has had to admonish from time to time. Take anything from that forum with a grain of salt... and anyone who has not heard Opeth, please disregard the fans who are critical of DT before hearing Opeth's music. DT and Opeth really DO fall over a large overlapping audience and with good reason. If you can deal with the growling vocal parts (and they do grow on you once you see how he uses them to provide a certain texture to the song), then you'll have found yet another source of musical beauty as rich as DT or any other epic prog/metal band. Personally I think they should co-headline, but in reality I am pretty sure Mike and the rest of DT respect Opeth enough to give them a proper length timeslot regardless of terminology.

I'm guessing... 40 minutes... which amounts to 4 Opeth songs co-headline would be amazing! however, Opeth hasn't reached that popularity yet.

Just checked out the opeth forum thread. Seems like a pretty typical reaction for that crowd. Some hardcore metal fans just can't get into dream theater. When I went to the first gigantour, half of the people never even heard of DT. A lot of these 2 bands fans do overlap, but I bet the majority of the overlapers are DT fans. DT fans just seem to be more open minded to other types of music.

These are the ones, though, that stick out in threads like the one linked.

I don't find this that surprising. When DT signed to RR, I think it was just a matter of when (rather than IF) this would happen. And if there was a band willing to put aside being a headliner and open for DT, Opeth would be as good a candidate mainly because of Mikael Akerfeldt being a DT fan and growing up listening to them.

ORIGINAL: Portnoy Yes it's pretty certain that Opeth will be our Special Guests for our next North American leg in April/May of next year... Pretty cool tour though, huh?! Slam dunk and home run. (hat-trick, touchdown and birdie) Mike, thank you again for having the coolest fucking gigs on earth. The only way I'm missing this show is if I'm dead.

Imagine this - Opeth play Ghost Reveries (or Blackwater Park) in its entirety, plus the best bits from Damnation and Still Life etc, then DT come on, play Scenes in it's entirety plus a few from I & W, Awake, and every other goddam album they've made. Both bands then come together for an encore of Closure, Repentance and something else...... Goddam, this tour MUST, I repeat MUST come to the UK. Please, please, please - this is my biggest dream ticket of all time!!!

The first leg had two bands playing 35-minute sets, with about a 15-minute break in between for a set change. So...Opeth would have 90 minutes and then DT would have two hours or so.

That would be an amazing tour, have seen Opeth live and they are majestic. I'll hope and pray that they come over to the UK but can't believe anyone would criticise DT for the selection of support bands. I've seen them with Rudess Morgenstein, Spocks Beard, Porcupine Tree, Pain Of Salvation and just about to see them with Symphony X. Unlike pretty much every other band I've ever seen DT actually take out bands that their fans might actually like. Opeth are on the up but are not yet at the level to co-headline with DT.
Read between the lines Criticise the words they're selling. Think for yourself And feel the walls become sand beneath your feet.
