Very nice review Bill, makes up almost for me not being there. I still haven't heard from David yet but we're rehearsing on Wednesday, I'm sure he'll tell me all about it. Did you chat with him?

No...sadly, I was very rushed for time at that point, and I think all of us were kind of hungry, so we dove outside to eat.  Never got to catch him or Bob for signatures or anything...

          He got it from me

You sent me a copy of the indy release, and David sent a copy to one of the websites I write for, so I figured rather than keep two copies, I'd give it to someone who might be turned on to the music and then buy the expanded release on 10T.

            Ah gotcha!

I do admit it had me wondering since *I* didn't even see the final product yet! Also too bad you didn't get to talk to David nor Bob! Anxious to hear David's stories/experiences after rehearsal tonight!

Never posted this here, thought I did:

From Jacob Holm-Lupo, founder of Swedish band White Willow:

This to announce that White Willow has been somewhat re-structured. Not that that's sensational news coming from us, but it's a bit of a new situation now. We have disbanded WW (as a band), and will no longer rehearse or give concerts. This is a little bit sad, since we felt that the last run of concerts we gave with the "Signal to Noise" line-up was our best ever. But all things must come to an end, and it was a mutual decision, happily made, that we call it quits. We have done a lot of strange things, explored a lot of different aspects to our music, and we feel that we might not have had that much more to give in a typical write-rehearse-record-tour context anymore. We all have other projects we want to spend some time on, and our everyday routines are also changing as (some of us) are finally growing up and having families and such. BUT, all that said, this is not the end of White Willow. Lars Fredrik Frøislie and myself will continue to make White Willow music, and we even have the concept for our next album ready. It will be written, arranged, rehearsed and recorded simultaneously, by the two of us and a number of appropriate musicians. But recording will only start when I am done with my Opium Cartel album and Lars has gotten a couple of his albums out. The forecast is something quite different from "Signal to Noise" - a little dark, quite complex.

                Of interest:

The Tangent's new album scheduled for release in early 2008 is set to feature Jakko M Jakszyk as guitarist. Jakko has an enormous history behind him in the story of progressive music, and his most recent solo album which features contributions from Robert Fripp, Mel Collins, (King Crimson) Clive Brooks, Dave Stewart (Egg National Health, Bruford) and Gavin Harrison (Porcupine Tree) - is testament to just a part of that history. Entitled "The Bruised Romantic Glee Club", the album is not to be missed and can soon be purchased direct
                from http://www.thetangent.org/

Jakko's most well known recent project in progressive circles was as the lead guitarist and vocalist for the 21st Century Schizoid Band, a name given to the reincarnation of the early King Crimson... where Jakko had to be Robert Fripp and Greg Lake and John Wetton at the same time.

Jakko steps into the Tangent to fill a space formerly occupied by
Roine Stolt and Krister Jonsson. All the band welcome him and hope for a productive future........

Krister Jonsson has played guitar for the Tangent since Roine Stolt left in 2004. Although he won't be appearing on the forthcoming album, the band are fully mindful and very appreciative of the enormous contribution he has made to the Place In the Queue album, and to the live dates and live albums that have happened before and since "Queue". The forthcoming Karmakanic album will be another opportunity to hear the man play alongside Jonas and Zoltan.... and there's guest performances from Tangenteers Theo Travis (Sax) and
                Andy Tillison (Hammond & Moog).

The Tangent's fluid lineup has been essential to the development of the group. Early demos of the new album featuring Jakko are extremely tasty...

So I got Vemod today and it's kicking my ass. Gonna get all their albums in time and I really enjoy their new one also. Great band and thanx for the recommendation.

i think it is time that we get back to do some album reviews... hopefully within the next couple of days (or perhaps in the weekend) I think I'll do a Syd Barrett review, so stay tuned

Glad you picked up Vemod...the rest of the journey through their catalogue will be an enjoyable one!

I've no issues at all with reviews...so long as it doesn't fall on me to carry to the load entirely.  I mean, there's a bunch of you who've posted in this thread...I may have a huge CD collection, but it doesn't make my opinions any more valid than anyone else's.  I'd love to see all of ya posting thoughts and reviews...

Well I have already made some reviews (3 I think) and I have always wanted to make more. All I'm saying is that it is a long time since more people did something about it (it was not minded on you entirely Bill)

And yeah I will be looking forward to getting the rest of their catalogue. All I know is that I really like their debut and thier latest effort, so I guess all in between will be quality as well

Oh, I certainly wasn't trying to imply that you were placing the onus was on me...only that for a while it felt like it was.  To me, at least.

I'll likely post something in the next day or so...just need to decide what.

You'll like Nucleus as well, I think. Anekdoten has put out some great material. Starting with Vemod was the right choice for sure. I think some fans were disillusioned with Gravity, but I liked it. Also loosely related, and worth checking out, is the project Morte Macabre, and their album Symphonic Holocaust.

Yeah that sounds really interresting... but can you guys pleace make a quick sum up of what the other Anekdoten albums sounds like (minus Vemod and the new one) and how fucked is Morte Macabre??

And Bill I see your point... I'm just glad you are thinking on making some more reviews... yours usually kick ass

                              Thanks

Here's one to get things fired back up again:

                              Artist: Aziola Cry
                              Album: Ghost Conversations
                              Label: Translation Music LLC
                              Website: http://www.aziolacry.com

                              Reviewer: Bill Knispel

                              Track List:
                              1 Ghost Conversation I
                              2 Ghost Conversation II
                              3 Ghost Conversation III

Way back in October 2006 I reviewed Aziola Cry’s debut release, Ellipsis. I concluded my review with this:
I can’t rave enough about this album. It’s not going to be for everyone; I think Ellipsis is the kind of album that will have fans of melodic progressive music scratching their heads wondering what the point was. Fans of the aforementioned influences (Tool, King Crimson, etc.), as well as fans of groups like Gordian Knot, will find this to be an addictive, enjoyable album.
8 months on (give or take), I’m pleased to get a chance to review their second release, an EP entitled Ghost Conversations. An all too brief listening experience at just over 23 minutes, the three wholly instrumental tracks on Ghost Conversations have distilled the band’s musical abilities and styles to their purest state.

“Ghost Conversation I” opens the album ominously, with eerie, dark soundscapes acting like synthesizer foundations. Brief stabs of guitar or higher pitched Stick playing break the quiet, funereal mood slightly before brushed cymbals herald the imminent entry of the full band. The song suddenly takes on a dirgey, industrial metal feel, not unlike the 2003 King Crimson performing a twisted rendition of their 1984 track “Larks Tongues in Aspic III.” Jason Blake’s Stick pulses, Mike Milaniak’s guitar keens, and Tim Stickradt’s drums hold the proceedings together with laser precision. The band’s metal leanings just as quickly drop from the mix, more soundscapes and chimes adding deceptive levity to the mix.

The listener lulled by the soundscapes leading out of the EP’s opening track will be startled into a more awake state by the sudden burst that is “Ghost Conversation II.” A rockier piece by far, Milaniak’s guitar soars like some ancient bird of prey over the shifting rhythmic sands. Moments remind of classic, early King Diamond musically, with clean picked guitar and sustained melodic lines over scattershot drumming. Aziola Cry’s industrial roots show in a heavy middle section, near blast beat drumming and a thick powerful mix pushing the band into incredibly heavy arenas.

The EP closes with “Ghost Conversation III,” perhaps the most straightforward and heaviest composition on the release. Even here, straightforward may be a misnomer, as there’s little traditional or typical in the song’s arrangement, with walking bass lines and MIDI-processed guitar (or Stick) “piano” adding a very cool feel and interesting sonic seasonings to the mix. It’s a heavy and textured piece that closes out the release powerfully.

Drawing again from my review of their previous album, I said this about the packaging/cover art:
Additionally, the album’s artwork is fitting and evocative. Created by graphic artist Micka Klauk (additional examples of her art are available on the official Aziola Cry website), the moody chiaroscuro art helps to create a feeling of despair and mood well suited for the music held within.
Replace chiaroscuro with sepia-toned, and the statement retains its truthfulness. The cover art is eerie, with slightly faded lettering on the cover adding an otherworldly, ghost-like feel. In a time where it often feels that cover art is the least worried about, least focused on portion of an artist’s package (unless that cover art is meant to highlight a performer’s...ahem...assets), it’s pleasing to see a band like Aziola Cry issuing a package that is complete both inside and out.

Ghost Conversations is all too short with a length just over 23 minutes. It is a listening experience that will leave you breathless and exhilarated...and potentially afraid to see what lurks around the corner.

                              Band Members:
Jason Blake – Grand Stick and Stick Bass
Mike Milaniak – Electric and Acoustic Guitars
                              Tim Stickradt - Drums

Nice review again... I must say that this band sounds really interresting. All the things, you describe so visually, really sounds like something I would dig. Plus I love your King Diamond reference! And cool it's a trio.. it's rare in prog.

I think I'll go look on amazon right now to see if they have something with Aziola Cry

anybody fans of Black Bonzo? I got their latest CD and it blows me away. Can't listen to it enough! and like sal said, it's not long for the sake of filling a CD. 54 minutes of proggy bliss.
http://www.brianmckenzie.com is the new project I'm in. Please listen! :) thanks!

Heard bits at NF and liked what I heard.  On my to buy list.  Sounds like the lost Uriah Heep album, and that's NOT a bad thing at all!

I heard ProgMetal Fusion mention them on the forum a couple time. If I rememeber correctly, he made a thread that contained a link to their myspace. They sounded pretty good.

Yeah it's a pretty awesome album indeed (also one of my favorites of the year so far), but thanks for bringing it up anyway.

And about Aziola Cry I heard some of their material on their webside and I'm really liking what I'm hearing. Gonna buy the album and the EP next month hopefully, so thank you Bill for introducing them

No good answer.  No bonus tracks that I know of, but with expanded booklets.  Supposedly Works I and Works II are going to be combined as one release.  No clue on SQ, so I don't know if they have gone for the everything louder than everything else school of remastering, a.k.a. hard limiting and compression out the wazoo (and no, not the Grand Wazoo, but let's not discuss Frank and his occasionally quite odd remastering decisions from the mid-1980's...)...

would you guys be interested in me doing a track-by-track of Black Bonzo? I'll type it out and drop it in here.

on a random note, I heard "going for the one" this morning on XM. I haven't heard this song/that album in years...and man, it's so killer. I love not hearing something in ages and having it "click" again. I have to go back and listen to the whole cd again. I can't wait to hear "Paralells" again!

you guys have got me interested in anekdoten...I heard the samples from the new record and really like it. I'm gonna have ot pick up some of their stuff.

ok guys, here's my review....christ, it's longer than Tales.

Black Bonzo – Sound of the Apocalypse

The cover art on this album sets you up for the maelstrom within. It’s a dark mountain scene and in the distance volcanoes explode and a large city is in it’s destructive path. Open the CD cover (it’s a digi-pak) and there are waves crashing angrily on a rocky shore. A boat is stuck in this toiling ocean while lightening and tornadoes thrash about. This cover art is fantastic and fits the music perfectly. Onto the music…

Thorns Upon A Crown – Synthy space noises start off this track and resolve quickly with a triumphant organ melody. The whole band kicks in and the first thing that hits you is the production quality. Something familiar yet modern. You can hear the queen influence with the harmonized guitar licks, drum fills and overall feel. The song kicks into a syncopated guitar/bass/drums riff while fantastic harmonized vocals tell you about “Treading over fields unknown”. What’s this? Catchy verses? Then a catchy chorus? Outstanding use of words ala Jon Anderson to be melodic and almost as another instrument. Then a second chorus/bridge section powerfully leads into a soft, pensive take on the verse riff. Dynamics? Check! It makes the ensuing chorus that much more powerful. This band has really studied the ways of old prog bands and yet this all feels so fresh and new. The solo section comes with a change of pace and allows the guitarist, Joakim Karlsson to show off his skill. Woah, a Hammond solo too! Nicklas Ahlund shows his considerable chops in an Emersoninan way. A quick drum break leads back into the 2nd chorus, now slowed down for an fantastic effect. You can feel the angst and conviction in Magnus Lindgren’s lead vocals. And like that, the song ends, 7 minutes has flown by.

Giant Games – A melancholy vocal/guitar line reminiscent of the Supper’s Ready intro dominates the intro to this song. It’s strangely hypnotic and gives you a swirling, spinning feeling. The verses give way to a jazzy, King Crimson-esque melody. It’s guitar and keyboards but one can envision a sax playing these lines. Instruments such as mellotron, vibraphones and other percussion litter the next section all the while keeping catchy melodies afloat. There are some nice stops and starts and syncopated playing going on here. The fine drumming of Mike Israel manages to push and pull the song; drum fills are melodic and never feel like overplaying. The song ends almost too quickly, leaving you begging for more.

Yesterdays Friends – A solo acoustic joined by flute (yes, flute) is the introduction to this track. The expressive guitar, similar to the And You And I slide guitar ratchets up the emotion. The track then twists into a syncopated drum lead verse into a pure Procol Harum organ/vocal “chorus” section. Back to the verse and the lyrics of lost friendships and questions: “Why can’t we be friends like we were yesterday. Sun was shining and you held my hand”. A very quick, Yes-like solo section keeps things interesting bridging the gap to another verse. The Slide guitar makes a return, dripping with emotion. The mellotron echoes this melody later in the song closing it on a very sad and expressive note. This is as close to a ballad as you’ll get on this record.

The Well -  The zeppelin/deep purple-ish intro with a hint of Iron Maiden in the verses drive this song toward the “future”. A piano in the background adds another wonderful layer in the second time through the verse and makes the part so fantastic. Then we’re met with an incredible, soaring chorus. You’ll find it stuck in your head quickly. This probably is the most “straight-ahead” song in the bunch but one of the catchiest and memorable. Toward the end of the tune, a mellotron lead breakdown gives us a warning; “Glowing inside like a gun – free from the guilt and the curses – hiding the shades in your glass – not reading the signs is unwise”. This section leads to a heavy riff, plodding; driving us toward the wonderful guitar melody outro. Once again, it’s over, leaving you wanting more.

Intermission: Revelation Song – A true intermission for this CD. This track is a short acoustic number, clocking in just under 2 minutes. Flute, acoustic guitar and vocals make up this song singing about making ourselves free and the hopeful future. The addition of some percussion and hand claps make it feel like a fireside sing-a-long. A wonderful breather in the middle of the CD.

                                                    Ageless Door –
The First thing that comes to mind is “this is the best riff Kansas never wrote”. There’s definite anger pushing and surging in the instruments. Lovely touches of mellotron violin glide over the top of the fantastic riffs underneath. The multi-layered vocals have a wonderful melody and I can’t stress enough how wonderful of a vocalist Magnus is. His voice goes from high to low; gravely to clear and it’s always full of emotion and conviction. A total Brian May harmonized/layered solo leads us down into a very thin lizzy bass lead breakdown. Anthon Johansson anchors this section with a groovy, melodic and most of all rock solid bassline. We return to the chorus with it’s harmonized vocals and just like that the song ends.

Iscariot – This is my personal favorite track on the CD. It starts with an odd time guitar riff, which the band seamlessly integrates itself into. The song almost has a regal feel to it. Similar in feel to Firth of Fifth. You could picture knights riding in colums while this music drives the horses forward. Flourishes of keyboards will echo this feeling in the second verse. The shuffling beat of the chorus is a perfect foil to the verses and lyrically, it’s brilliant. We’re treated to a fantastic instrumental section where the synths are out in full display. The guys really flex their musical muscles on this one and the heavy riff at 3:24 brings to mind giant machines going to war. The use of dynamics is exceptional here; really drawing you in then smashing you in the face with it’s power. The sparse use of double bass drums really emphasizes the riffing and adds so much. Then we’re treated to a fantastic reprise of the intro guitar riff leading back to the verse and it’s almost “bohemian rhapsody” like piano section. This song ends with such emotion you can’t help but get swept away in the lyrics and the entire experience. The song is 7:22 long but it flashes by in an instant. Brilliant songwriting and playing. Again, my favorite track on this CD.

Sound Of The Apocalypse – Ok, this is the album’s epic track. Clocking in at over 13 minutes and sectioned off into 3 parts it really runs the gamut. Part 1, Twins begins with a slow, sparse piano playing the overall main song melody. The chords are full, beautiful, emotional and sad. Instruments and vocals come in and build up this section. The drums are reminiscent of “Bolero” with their martial beat and steady increase in volume and intensity. This song lyrically deals with the destruction of our planet due to our abuse of it. The lyrics paint as bleak of a picture as the music does. The main melody is anchored by the piano, but a clean guitar really drives it home. The almost-funeral dirge of the first section is built up to a crescendo; our world’s destruction symbolized by a large gong hit. This leads us into the second section; an instrumental called “Towers collapse”. We’re met with a frantic piano riff and very metallic/king crimson like interplay. Almost jazzy (ala ELP’s Karn Evil 9 part 2) and very evil sounding this section really feels apocalyptic. Great back and forth soloing with no wankery. Classic prog solo section at it’s best. Great patterns laid down by the rhythm section here. Shades of Transatlantic around the 7:45 mark make me smile. Heavy and tight relents to a jazz influenced piano groove, anchored by the bass, playing an earlier melody. The section reveals itself to be the main melody played in a totally different style. This section ends in a seamless transition to the next; entitled “The Boiling Point” with the entrance of vocals. The huge build up to the end of the song is epic, emotional and fantastic. Harmony vocals, mellotron, guitar leads, huge drum fills….the entire band’s signature is summed up with the final 3 minutes of this song. A funeral for our planet; the outro feels sad and sorrowful, yet majestic.

The thing about this band is their ability to have every single note purposeful, catchy and distinctive. They meld in their influences to something quite special and while they have the ability to shred like the best in the genre, they let their songwriting do the talking. Everything on this CD is flawless. Production is fantastic, songs are perfect in length and composition and execution. This cd makes you want to put it back on from the beginning and that’s something rare in this day of modern prog. Highest recommendation!!!

My first was "Classic Yes" on casette, then Fragile, then I got Tales...was blown away then I went and got Going for the One. Awaken and Paralells blow my mind to this day. I can't get enough of that cd. Man, I wish I had it with me at work today! I need a progPod!

Frenchtown is a nice little town on the banks of the Delaware river, about a half hour north of Trenton and a half hour south of Philipsburg.  And not only do some of us speak French (you've just witnessed just about the entire breadth of my fluency of the language!), this weekend we celebrate Bastille Day!

Hmm...maybe I need to dig up another review or something.

How about this in the interim...what's been the most interesting prog rock record you've (as in anyone reading this thread) listened to this year?  New discovery, new release, or an old "friend" dusted down for the first time in a while...let's hear about it!

                                                                        Merci beaucoup!

How about this in the interim...what's been the most interesting prog rock record you've (as in anyone reading this thread) listened to this year?  New discovery, new release, or an old "friend" dusted down for the first time in a while...let's hear about it!

Hmmm... most interesting... that's kind of general... but I'd probably have to pick the 'old friend dusted down' route and say Banco's Seguendo Le Tracce. Just a stunning live record. As many of you will know, when you have a massive collection of prog (or any music for that matter), it is easy to... not forget, but to overlook albums or bands altogether - for years sometimes. I know P2501 and ProgMetalFusion will be nodding their heads as they read this. There is a huge upside to that, though: when you 'rediscover' an album (or again, an entire band), it is glorious. This Banco album falls squarely in that category. You should all put it on and listen right now.

re: Echolyn - As The World was the first one I ever heard, too, and to this day I still like it the best. But I also really like Suffocating The Bloom. I haven't listened much to Mei, I should put that in the Listen To At Some Point In The Near Future pile.

Beardfish - Sleeping in Traffic, Part 1 has been consuming a lot of my listening hours lately.  Excellent work from this relatively young band.

Additionally, I've recently acquired my first echolyn album - As the World.  They're like the second coming of Gentle Giant... which is simply awesome.  I think I'll order the rest of their early (pre-reformation) catalog soon.

As good as the early echolyn stuff is...and it's excellent, despite what the guys in the band will tell you...the three albums released following their reunion are wonderful.  Cowboy Poems Free (OOP and being remixed, I believe) is a collection of great rock music with heavy Americana themes, mei is the closest thing to an auditory journey through Dante's Purgattorio you will ever get...if it had been directed by John Huston.  And The End is Beautiful is dark, edgy and chock full of awesome twists and turns and incredible lyrics.  echolyn is a band that has aged incredibly well...and may come close to being the one band I can think of that has never disappointed me with any release throughout their career.

The newer stuff is on my "buy soon" list, no doubt - I just need to limit myself, else I'd end up with a huge credit card bill, a stack of 30 new CDs, and an angry girlfriend.
