Since I probably won't be back at a computer until around 4 15, can this count as my reservation if we do a SteveJohnson?

It´s amazing how DT still manage to surprise us. What a fantastic idea. Having your voice on a DT album... Damn that would be cool.

Wow...so I live in Rochester, NY...I have no classes on Friday...a friend of mine is considering skipping everything so we can leave at like 4/5AM to head straight to new york, hang out and get a shot...man if I do this I'd hope I'd get let in, it would suck to drive 7 hours like that and then have to head back without going! But what a fun trip!!! haha....maybe I will go ;)

Seriously, last night I had a very vivid dream of me asking my manager to let me have off work so I can go to NYC. Then it shifted gears, I stood on line and was one of the people chosen but the recording never happened. I stood outside and some girl was screaming and crying because that dude Mikael Akerfeldt (sp?) from Opeth was hanging around and she was an uber fan. He kinda stood there clueless as to how to handle her. Then Portnoy came out pissed that the recording fell through but instead we went out for lunch. Anyway, I'll be trying my hardest to get a spot in that chorus. It is...my destiny. Hopefully I'll run into some of you folks outside. If you recognize me (and don't hate me) come say hi.

I'm just trying to judge about how many people from this thread alone are saying "I'll be there".. I think the count is about 20 or so.... Keeping in mind each one will bring a friend... Damn it. Haha. Still may be making the trek from Minnesota.

Considering the amount of people that are going to converge on the studio location, and the limited amount of spots open, I can only forsee a big problem happening as fans battle each other to be one of the first 30-40 people to get in on the fun. It could get ugly. They will NOT be able to prevent people from lining up at precisely 1 PM, and even if they do, it will be the equivalent of a choatic land grab, with fans pushing each other out of the way to be able to snag their spot on line. Otherwise, you'd have fans camping out overnight. Here's my suggestion: LOTTERY. Just like how Broadway shows like Rent, Avenue Q, and Wicked do it. Still have everyone show up at 1 PM, but in the hours between 11 AM & 1 PM, you can fill out a slip of paper with your name on it, along with a "1" (If it is just yourself) or a "2" (If you are attending with a friend). MAKE SURE YOU BRING PHOTO ID! At 1 PM, someone will draw the names out of a bucket. If your name is announced, just present your ID, and if it's good, you get placed online, along with your friend if you mentioned you were bringing a friend by writing a "2" on the slip. Once the 30-40 spots are accounted for, that's it. This is a system that is fair to everyone that shows up, and there won't be any bickering or fighting between fans to get in. It will be simply the luck of the draw. The last time DT played a general admission show in NYC, people showed up at 11 AM for a 6 PM doors. I sense this could be far worse. DT fans can be very rabid, and that fanaticism could turn into something ugly.

I'd love to at least have a chance at this (I've been "given" favorable clearance to travel down there by work and home), but can't see beyond this 1:00 thing where people will just "show up." Its too random and open-ended in my opinion. A Lottery seems is more precise. Without some order, its very likely to be a weird scene which I'd rather not be witness to. I could see a lot of unhappy people there without some objective process for people to be chosen. Just and opinion of course. The devil is always in the implementation & details.

The lottery could work, but the idea of having a 2-person ticket is a bit ridiculous. So, you brought a friend... why should that give you a different chance of winning? Heck, aren't we all friends here anyways? Also, should there be a lottery, it would still be extremely disappointing to the other 100s of people that show up. If they can do so, maybe the boys can at least make this a meet & greet get-together for the fans and the band, even for those of us not lucky enough to chant. The idea that this is even happening is well beyond the dreams of any music fan that has ever lived, so even if my suggestion doesn't work out, I can't really complain... still, if it were to happen, nobody could go home feeling dejected.

Without an official ruling from Mike, we can't really talk about what should be done, only what is planning to be done now.. But I really REALLY don't want to drive 20 hours to NYC, only to not get in. A meet and greet session for the fans that didn't get to chant would be an extreeeemely good idea.

Sweet---DT's doing a remake of "Witch Hunt" by Rush. How about recording some of Manhattan's street noises and re-doing "The Camera Eye" too!

It's too bad we couldn't make a list of 40 of us who know are absolutely going to pass on to MP, who get priority and identification checked at the door or something. and about friends...I mean, yea, it would be nice to bring a friend for the ride and all, but I personally think those 40 people should be the fans, not the fans and some friends. It would mean alot more to us than it would to some of our friends, and with a 40 person limit, it would be a shame for 20 of them to not really care as much.

We shouldn't be doing this, this is a kind enough of a gesture on band's part to let some people into this studio to record part of the album, please let's not blow it and have MP say at the last minute "forget it we're not doing". I'm sure most of us, including myself, who are driving 6-7+ hours just to have a shot at being let in would be really upset if people decided to be problematic enough to cause Mike to rescind on his decision. I'm looking forward to this, looking forward to seeing people there!

Wow I really hope this doesn't get ruined. I can't be there, but I'd hate to see part of Mike's vision for the album go by the wayside.
Still, and forever, a Mike Portnoy fan first and foremost. Rock on Adrenaline Mob! "It's time to stand up and finish what you started."

I don't mean to argue about how to do it. I just don't want to see a gesture like this get ruined because of unscrupulous fans, none of which are on this forum. Seeing how MP responded in this thread and stated that this is how he is going to do it, then I'm going to trust him. MP has been one of the most fan-friendly guys in the music industry that I've ever encountered. Just think of all of the artists that DON'T allow this kind of interaction. I had a similar kind of experience when They Might Be Giants did a special show for their documentary film, "Gigantic". The gig turned out to be 5 hours long (with a lot of breaks of course), and it was an experience I'll never forget. And I can always remind myself of that experience by watching the DVD of the film. It's going to be special for the lucky ones who can truly say their voice in part of the final product of DT's 2007 album. A big kudos to MP for making it happen.

(DT FAN calls back): Is there a back entrance where I can sneak in before 1:00? (Business Owner): AARRGHHHHH!!!!

I knew as soon as Mike posted this that trouble was inevitable. Bless you for trying to be generous Mike but unfortunately there are too many people out there who don't think before they act. Hopefully it will turn out OK and it won't be a total zoo with 1000+ milling around outside.

And once again NYC is the place to be! Sounds like another exciting DT event! Wonderful! Unfortunately I’m nowhere near New York this friday. Then again I’m not sure I wanna hear myself on a DT album LOL. This idea reminds me of Joe Satriani’s Crowd Chant. To all who make it into the studio; ENJOY! (And let’s hope things don’t get messy at the door.)

Hmmm... I want to say something, but I am not exactly sure how to say this without sounding like a bitch. Furthermore, I want it to be understood that this thought is STRICTLY MINE... I HAVE NOT SPOKEN TO MIKE ABOUT THIS. Just reading this thread from a "fan's perspective" I can feel the excitement and energy this opportunity has created, and I think that's great. But I've read a few posts that also made me think "don't push your luck". Asking about cameras, suggesting a "meet and greet", feeling territorial about "your" turf... I'm not sure if those were sincere or just jokes, but it made me a little nervous. I can't help but think about the lyrics of "Never Enough". This sounds like a very generous offer made by Mike and the band. Why can't that be enough? Enjoy it for what it is and respect the boundaries that come with it. If you let it be, it will be a memorable experience for 40 lucky fans. Don't make it into something people will live to regret. Strictly MY 2 cents. Take Care.... ~ Sam
(although I am Mike Portnoy' s sister ~ nothing I post is of the opinion of Mike unless I specifically say so... otherwise I am just a fan like everyone else!)

I was just putting it out there as a possible way to appease the fans who can't participate, but I know that if Mike says "no" then it's still cool. Sorry if I ruffled any feathers.

What makes me even more nervous is the fact that people are going to be travelling from really far away (or taking off work, or whatever) to go to this. It's really cool, you're hardcore fans and all that. But now imagine you're the 41st person in line and you don't get in. Are you going to just shrug your shoulders, say "well, that sucks" and go get a beer (at Heartland Brewery, because their beer kicks ass!), or are you going to be upset about it and complain on the forums? Granted, 99% of the people who don't get in will take it fine and go on their merry way, but it only takes one to ruin something. I dunno, it was something I was thinking about when reading through this thread... Hope I didn't sound like a jerk.

Granted, 99% of the people who don't get in will take it fine and go on their merry way, but it only takes one to ruin something. I dunno, it was something I was thinking about when reading through this thread... Hope I didn't sound like a jerk. I try to minimize the use of the F*** bomb around here but in this case...anybody who complains about this either before or after the event is a fucking moron. EVERYBODY knew how slim the odds would be, all you have to do is read the post. So, if you knew that up front and still decided to risk it and travel, you would do so knowing your odds. Not very good odds. Not a single person should have asked for anything different in terms of what Mike offered, nor should anybody bitch about whether they get picked or not. But alas, as always, generosity is meet with ungratefulness. p.s. this is not directed at you.

RE: Live near NYC?? Want to be on the new DT??

Hi Sam, nice of you to check in (MP's sister for those who don't know). I think a lot of the fans just want this to turn out well for MP and the band. It's an incredible, exciting, and generous offer for them to do something like this. I mean people are talking about coming from Minnesota for this, it's that exciting. As a DT geek myself if I knew I'd get in I'd use some of my frequent flyer miles and already have my flight booked (being able to get time off, and having friends in NYC also helps if I was to do it). As the owner of the Pull Me Under heart (second hand from the guy who originally won the MPBay auction), I know, and we all know the cool things like that MP can offer up. The bad thing with that is after the beard, and after the heart, MP offered up his Ipod for auction, and that unfortunately turned into a disaster (not his fault), and there has been no MPBay auctions since. Bascially to return to my opening statement is this, I think most fans want this to succeed without a hitch, and not to turn into the aborted Ipod auction where MP tries to do something cool, and it turns out bad, and then he gets shit he does not deserve. Good intentions by MP can be ruined when he all wanted to do was something cool. That's why we love the guy and the band so much, and hope some of the things mentioned earlier (too many people lining up and being turned away thinking they're entitled to something for example, and then being pissed about it) do not happen. I hope and I know all of us do that this all works out and at the end of the day that MP and the band is remembered for doing something cool. *crosses fingers*

No feathers ruffled, I probably shouldn't have said anything... it's all good. Everyone just be good and have fun! later..... ~ Sam
(although I am Mike Portnoy' s sister ~ nothing I post is of the opinion of Mike unless I specifically say so... otherwise I am just a fan like everyone else!)

In any case, it sounds like it will be an awesome time for those who get the chance. Cheers to DT for making their fans more than a part of things. Not a lot of bands out there open up like they do. Have fun, NY'ers!

ORIGINAL: emtee ORIGINAL: VirtualVoid What makes me even more nervous is the fact that people are going to be travelling from really far away (or taking off work, or whatever) to go to this. It's really cool, you're hardcore fans and all that. But now imagine you're the 41st person in line and you don't get in. But alas, as always, generosity is meet with ungratefulness. p.s. this is not directed at you. Oh, I agree 100%... but that's why it'd suck if someone DID make a big deal out of it. Anyway, I'm probably just paranoid and silly; all I want is for this album to kick some serious ASS. More than anything I'm really, really glad they're laying down the vocals now... IIRC, that's the last step before they call it a day on the album, and I can't wait to hear the next masterpiece. And I REALLY, ESPECIALLY can't wait to chant with a crazed audience at the next DT concert, when they play whatever song Mike needs all these people for. I'm thinking that that'll be very \m/
