Why do Lim. Editions

According to the Amazon.com sales ranks, the standard edition of the new OSI album is ranked 33,637, while the limited edition is ranked 243. If the Lim. Edition is selling that much better, why do they even bother with the standard edition. They should have just released the Limited one as standard. Just my thoughts. Jim

Without knowing exactly fomr the people or being a marketing major, but I can guess quite a few reasons. If they are truly limited, people will pre-order them and sntach them up right away. This does two things, one it generates early interest in the band/project. Also it gets people that may have waited till it came to store to buy it now. I think the reasoning being that these people that wait may not buy it for whatever reason and this gurantees a sale. If the cd is good, the more people that get it, the more word of mouth, especially for a prog band. Also there is a chance some people will buy both, for whatever reason. I bought the normal edition of the new SYX. Later I saw the limited edition, I almost bought it. (I would have just given my other copy away) Also it might not cost that much more to produce and the profit might be better. Also many sites offer the limited edition through the label site. They make a ton more money selling direct to the fans then selling to a distriubutor, who then sells it to stores, etc

I think it is supply and demand There is huge demand for limited editions from the hardcore fans. Mind you, I would be interested to know who " limited" certain editions are

Because they' re LIMITED editions, people want to buy them as soon as they can so as not to miss out. Plus, they' re around the same price as the ordinary edition in some stores, so for a whole extra CD it' s well worth the 2 or so dollars, plus they won' t be available later on. If they were standard issue, there would be nothing special about it, and the hardcore fans wouldn' t be able to look down their noses at the people who buy the ordinary edition...

As far as I know, most labels who release limited editions and special packaging, do so because they believe who might have downloaded the album are going to buy the album instead. Let them believe what they think, in the meantime true fans (those who support the artist by buying the album) get the artsy beatiful boxes.
