Problem with computer/modem. HELP! Wednesday, February 05, 2003 7:35 PM (permalink)
I' m on my dads computer cause I have a major problem with the modem on my computer. I' m on a dial-up, and I know that the problem is not with my ISP, so I can eliminate them as a problem. My problem is that after my computer dials up, and commects with my ISP,, I can not do ANYTHING online. I can not download web pages,, I cant download any e-mail, I cant connect to any instant messaging programs like Yahoo, or AIM. I' m stuck, and the computer wont do ANYTHING once connected. I didn' t change any settings on my computer. I just woke up, connected to the internet,, and then nothing would happen. I just dont know what the problem could be. It goes through all of the steps that it normally would go through, and everything looks OK,, but its not. Let me try to explain to you what goes on. When I click on the icon on my desktop that use to get online, it brings up the connection box(just like it allways has) and then I click on " connect" . I' m sure everyone knows how all this works,, blah, blah. blah,, but I' m going to continue. So after it dials up, it gives you the status of whats going on. It says, dialing,,,,,,,connecting,,,,,,veryfing username and password,,,,,,logging on to network. That is just what it has allways done, and thats not where my problem lies. Here' s where the problem starts though,,,,, After you connect on almost all dial-up' s,,,, a little icon, or picture of two little computer screems shows up in the lower right hand corner of the screen,,right next to the clock. And these are suposed to flash back and fourth while your computer and ISP comunicate. But mine dont flash now. And you know how if you take your mouse, and move it on top of those two little screens,,,it will pop up a little text box telling you how many bytes were sent,,how many were recieved, and what you connection speed is?? Wellll, when I do that to mine it only reads something like 430bytes sent,403bytes recieved.[:' (] Those numbers used to be in the thousands!!!!! I thought that maybe my moden might have messed up since the computer is very old.. So I went out and bought a new modem,, got it wo rork finally after about an hour, and I am still haveing the same problem I have tried to set things differently, but nothing seems to help. So now I have to go get my money back for the modem since thats not the problem. Might anybody have an idea of what the problem might be??? Because I' m all out of ideas. I dont want to have to re-install my opperating system,, but I will if I cant figgure out what it wrong with this stupid thing. I' m running Windows98 if thats any help to anyone. Thanks for any help if you can give any!!

Almost sounds like a DNS issue but that would be odd if you hadn' t changed anything. I assume that all of that is set via DHCP from your ISP right? I would see if you can ping the outside world by IP and that should tell you if it could be DNS related. At a command prompt, type ping 64.179.4.146 and see what you get. If you get a reply then ping by name and see if it resolves. That IP is linuxquestions.org so try that. Let me know what you get.
