For those unfamiliar with these guys, they are kind of big among the Dredg fans. They remind some people of Incubus. Anyway, I was turned on to them by some of the Dredg folks to their 2005  album "Buy Our Intention, We'll Buy You A Unicorn." which I liked. But their follow-up album "Set Sail The Prairie," which due out in September (3rd release actually) has been raved about the past month or so by the Dredg fans..being a breakthrough disc.

I had heard a demo of the new song "Campfire" a few weeks ago and liked what I heard, but the one they just uploaded to their myspace/purevolume sounds even better!

Like I said in a thread a few weeks ago, this album could be the sleeper record of the year. I'd recommend checking the new CAMPFIRE upload for anyone curious. They have some prog elements if people wonder anyway.

They actually posted another new song called "Empire" last week. Possibly the most kickass track from SSTP, VIA RAIL, is going to be added this week sometime. They also announced recently some new tour dates, including one in Minneapolis on August 12th  with the band 3

I can't get enough of this new album SET SAIL THE PRAIRE!I'm tell you..THIS IS THE ALBUM for 2006.

It's one of those rare cases of a band going from night to day on one album. THIS ALBUM IS THAT GOOD.

        Ok, buddy boy...

When I get home, I'm going to check these out... I admit being "sold" by your words..

But here me now, if I don't like this stuff... I'm going to sacrifice a backyard chipmunk to the prog gods for the sins you have spawned.

I'm not a huge fan of the vocalist, but that track really messed with my ability to find "one".  All those upbeats by the guitarists really threw me off.  I think they were dropping beats in there as well, which totally messed me up.  I haven't been thrown off like that in a while.

On this new record their vocalsist has a improved A TON from the last record. No emo screaming. "Buy Our Intention" their last record.the vocals in spots were annoying, but at other times they really worked. With this new record, their singer has learned how to control his voice much better and announciate a lot more clearly.

This new album is a concept album..and at that, a VERY BIG concept involving the Earth and the seasons. Each song represents a spot on the map and a period of time during the calendar year.

There are so many things I've discovered about this album in playing it over the last couple of weeks. It's grown on me a ton. The guitars are heavy, but the tone (or distortion) their guitarist uses I can't honestly recall hearing from a power chord. The production is clean. It reminds me of Ty Tabor from King's X or even Jasun Tiptun from Zero Hour, where the tone is incredibly thick..but at the same time it's clean.

But as a whole, every track flows perfectly. The folks on the Dredg forum have a 15 page discussion on this thing, and now just reading back a few months..long before I had heard this record, I was basically thinking it's cool they have a new album out, but I really don't expect it to be a landmark release or anything. And after a couple of times through I didn't, but many people know what I'm talking about when an album hits you square in the head, and you realize it's not just another run-of-the-mill album or prog band.

I mean like most bands, Kaddisfly may not be for everyone, but I'd be naive to not acknowledge how much better they have become as a band, and now reading through that topic, how much sweat and effort the band put into this album. Someone over there said they may have used as many as 50 tracks on some of the songs. It's stuff like that, that totally makes me go back to this guy over and over. Like with RELAYER or SFAM..there are things you are definitely not going to notice after a couple of plays.

                you ready for this?

the perfect kaddisfly blend tag. (i've been listening all afternoon)

                INCUBUS + DREDG + MUTEMATH

that is this band... perfect summation

                  Landon,
Have you heard the whole album?..or for that matter, just VIA RAIL..the song that turned my head. I'm sorry..but I'm not wrong about this release...whether you, or whoever else feels like chiming in here. TO ME..THIS ALBUM TEH SHIT. Some folks are piegon-holing them to be like a prettier-Incubus or some of the other names thrown out were Codeseven (electronic aspect of their sound) and Glassjaw. Maybe since I have never heard most those bands material, I wouldn't know. I just know this fucking album gives me goosebumps and I don't find anything flawed with it after many times through (as oppoosed to their last album). And I do not hear blatant quoting or borrowing from MuteMath or Dredg..the cleaner lite- guitar tone maybe, but I've heard tons of other bands use that same style..and with Kaddisfly, it's subtle..not excessive to me.

Now whether that appeals to many of the prog/dt fan's proverbial buttons I may be naive to have thought it would  ..but then again, I often question if it's even worth trying

I just know that to me, right now atleast, this is an incredibly addictve and inspiring record that the band, however they sound to you or whoever, did a lot to produce. And for a band like Kaddisfly, who really don't have a lot of name recognition, they can use every amount of exposure possible to get out of what they put in. They are not The Mars Volta or for that matter, Porcupine Tree. Around here, NOBODY KNOWS THEM.

Thanks for your opinion and for listening (and hope the chipmunk didn't suffer too long ), but I guess if others heard those songs (or the whole record when it comes out) they may not simplify it down how you did exactly.

                  Kyle

                    well let me say...

From my last post (as you can see) I never said I didn't like it.  It's........interesting. I will listen for multiple days before I promote or condemn (see Frost - Milliontown).

I'm intrigued.. which for me is saying something.. because for lots of bands, I write them off immediately.

Listened to the 2 songs from their new cd on myspace.....I don't know about these guys yet.  The vocals are sooo mundane and not unique to me.

Edit - I must say, the last minute or so of that Campfire song was fucking balls to wall awesome.

I'm saying that I was having a hard time finding the downbeat.  That doesn't happen to me all that often, and this song really did it to me.  I'm going to have to listen to it a few more times to get my head around it.  I thought it was kinda cool that they were able to do that.  I like the music, but it may take a few listens before it sinks in.

I found, like some other people, by going back to it a few times, it grows on you. Mind you, it helped in my case since hearing their last album. If you never heard the previous album, you may not appreciate how much they've improved..right away especially.

But this album is "a grower" to many.

If you go to youtube, there are a bunch of live videos of them (and some others making the album), altho the 1 of VIA RAIL, albeit played somewhat the same as the album version, IMO doesn't come close to matching the intensity of the studio version.

I'm still getting that dredg/mutemath vibe (again, not necessarily a bad thing)...

I mean especially the last 20 seconds of the first song.. holy cow. that little wiggly clean guitar sound.  that IS dredg!

Overall a good find. Not blown away after 4 full listens to the disc. But it's worthy.  Thanks for the info, Angra

Bad News, Good News, Bad News, maybe Good News?

                                    Attempting to sum up things:

Kaddislfy's album "Set Sail The Prairie" in all likelihood will not be released on September 12th due to the band wanting to promote the best way they feel possible. The "3 Months" of touring to support ithe band agreed is not best to run into December. So it is likely to be pushed back to February 2007.

Instead: on September 12th the band will likely release an EP/Mini Album/Album Preview with a b-side or 2 along with 4 tracks from SSTP. In a sense, similar to what Pure Reason Revolution did "previewing" THE DARK THIRD with "Cautionary Tales For The Brave" in 2005 -> THE DARK THIRD.

And on a local note: Kaddisfly/3/Kiss, Kiss are about to go out on tour

However, the Minneapolis show will not happen @ THE QUEST and is in Jeopardy of not taking place anywhere one week from tonight. Why? The Quest Club had a fire this week and the damage caused forced them to close til September 1st. On the bright side for me atleast, there is a show in Mankato on Monday the 21st. I am also trying to find another venue for the 12th/or the possibility of the band coming to Minneapolis on the 20th after Birch Run, MI and prior to going to Mankato on Monday the 21st.

Sucks when you look forward to a show..especially a show with 3 bands you really like and this happens, but what can you do?

I saw them this past weekend, but not 3 and Kiss Kiss ..but the fact ANY SHOW happened was a miracle.

Was lucky enough to hang with the guys and have dinner with them before the show which you don't get to do with most bands. May be the last time I ever have that chance with Kaddisfly.

The show itself was in a recording studio in Minneapolis which was odd but a bit unique in a way. I was standing 10 feet from them the whole show

The show is actually up on tradersden.org ..altho the vocals are quite low in the mix, it's not a bad recording. Check it out if you've been there or are curious.

The band are going to in all likelihood release the EP, with a B-side online and at shows in the next few weeks. Eventually it may be on like Amazon and their website for purchase in October. They also may be on tour again with 3 come this fall.

I've been listening to the songs up on myspace a lot lately.  Really, really digging on Campfire Junior.  That song has a great chorus.  In some ways, it reminds me of early Enchant, mainly in the vocals.  I think I'll be checking them out in Denver on the 22nd of this month, just to see what they're about.

                                          Enchant?..yeah I suppose I could see that.

This specific tour actually they are going to be selling (only this tour at concerts and digitally online) in limited pressing "The Four Seasons EP" which has 4 songs from the new record (The artwork you may have noticed on their myspace page), and also includes a track "Games" that WON'T be on the record when it's released in February.

When I saw them they were awesome. I'm seeing them again on the 25th, but I'm still hands-tied since Mew will be headlining a few miles away. Still hoping to catch both shows that night. Mew is actually here as well tonight with Kasabian (partly why I am not missing the K-Fly show for Mew as priority).

hey if you go to their myspace now GAMES is available to download. Catchy as all hell tune, albeit a little different than the stuff on the upcoming album. It reminds me of Coheed And Cambria a bit.

The EP sounds awesome. It's available on Itunes actually.

The show I saw last week was great, albeit a bit short. It's up on tradersden if anyone is interested. A guy I know taped it.

I checked out the song last night.  It was good, but not as good as Campfire and Empire.  I ordered the EP last week so I should be getting it sometime this week or early next week.  Looking forward to it.  How was their show?  I heard the Denver show got cancelled.

Denver got cancelled?..I saw a myspace bulletin about the show, but I don't recall anything about that.

Kaddisfly are to be touring next year a lot to support the new album when it comes out in February.

The show in Minneapolis was great, but only about 35 minutes. Long story short, they played with 4 other local bands at an all ages venue with a 10:30 curfew, so their set was shortened. One of the guitarists popped a string during CAMPFIRE and managed to switch guitars in time for the solo in fact.

^^^I think there was a last minute venue change with the Denver show, plus it was on a Sunday night, with I think the Avs having a home game, and another big show in town.  Plus, I think they were playing with a bunch of shitty local Denver bands as well.  I would've been pissed to drive an hour to see them play for 35 minutes.  I'll just wait and see them in 07 after the album is released.

                                                    Romdrums,
yeah the "Four Seasons Tour" is just with local bands. Some hope is they will headline next year and/or maybe a open for a band like Dredg or MuteMath. But they are certainly worth seeing in concert. REALLY HEAVY...also very "live." But I hear ya if it was a Sunday night and a bit of trip. They'll be back.

dunno if you're into bootlegs, but including the Mpls 10-25 show, a guy on tradersden has a number of others here.

Portland, Oregon's Kaddisfly returns with the Four Seasons EP-- a prelude to their second full length Set Sail The Prairie-- which will be released in early 2007.

An influential 20th century composer once posed a very troubling question: If music is dying, are musicians the ones who are killing it? Have these same musicians lost their natural intuition for creativity and vision in our vast sea of genre expectation, egocentric notoriety, and mainstream acceptance? In pre-production for their newly written and untitled 2005 aural collage, it becomes apparent that the Oregon's Kaddisfly has both struggled with this question, and emphatically reacted to its significance. Holding on to every sense of their artistic integrity, the band has consciously put its faith in one cyclical principal of the humanistic third dimension: Intelligent, engaging, and passionate art will forever remain an unwavering esoteric constant. From a linear perspective, the concept of Kaddisfly has traversed an enormous distance since its conception in a rural Eugene shanty at the turn of the Millennium. With the release of their 2001 EP Honorable Mention, 2002 EP Humania, and their challengingly thematic, 2003 opus Did you Know People Can Fly, the band, through incessant touring, broken hearts, financial collapse, and occasional emotional ruin has built an impenetrable underground reputation for emotional substance and creative mutation. Avoiding the music industry's postmodern confines of prepackaged labels and transparent boxes, Kaddisfly have attempted to replace image with substance, novelty with focus, limitation with inspiration, and eyes with ears.

that reminds me a lot of what they say about a lot of Prog bands ya know, struggle but stay in it for the music.

I ordered the EP when it was released, and just got it in the mail today.  I really like the songs.  There is some really creative stuff in there.  Very atmospheric and textured, and the drumming is great.  The singer's voice has really grown on me.  I'm really looking forward to the full length's release next year.  I think this concept they're using is pretty ambitious, but judging by the songs on the EP, I think they'll pull it off.  Another great find thanks to MP.com.  Seriously, we all need to start a label.  We've already got a solid potential A&R staff with some of the people here.

My friend's band played a show with these guys not long ago.  Or maybe they haven't done it yet.  Either way it's pretty cool.  Also, the Kaddisfly drummer used to work at the Guitar Center in my hometown.  He was probably the coolest person to ever work at that guitar center, and by that I mean everyone else there sucks and he's just pretty cool.

Yeah..just wait til you hear the whole shebang ...I'm still hearing new things, and to along with that, THE CONCEPT. From what I read, there is a whole side to it that requires the artwork and lyrics. Sorta like Dredg's LEITMOTIF. I had never read through the booklet until a few months ago. It really put a whole new light on how I hear that record now.

Not to mention, the band are already working on the follow-up and what I've heard is tremendous. It's to be a 3-part trilogy of concept of albums. The 1st being their last record, BUY OUR INTENTION: WE'LL BUY YOU A UNICORN..SET SAIL THE PRAIRIE and then.."Horses Galloping On Sailboats"

KS and RTG, yeah their drummer Beau is a cool guy..in fact the whole band are all really cool. I got to have dinner with them a few months ago. Really nice, down-to-earth guys and great musicians as well.

"Ladies and gentleman, we officially have something to be excited about for 2007. No, I'm not talking about the new LIFETIME record. Instead, I'm talking about a much younger, less traveled band by the name of KADDISFLY. You may have heard about them in 2005 when Hopeless put out their ambitious but inconsistent album Buy Our Intention; We'll Buy You A Unicorn. The follow-up to this record, Set Sail The Prairie, was originally scheduled to come out a month ago, but in an attempt to put in the necessary time for the disc, they instead decided to release a teaser called The Four Seasons EP, an EP that contains a b-side and four tracks from the upcoming full-length (now scheduled for a February '07 street date).

From what I can gather, the band's sophomore album will be split up into four sections that represent each season here on planet Earth. Therefore, each of the four songs on The Four Seasons represents, well, just that. The grandeur of this plan sounds all fine and dandy, but from my point of view, the music is what matters the most with KADDISFLY. While the band meddled a bit in progressive rock, pop, indie, and even hardcore with their earlier tracks, the songs on The Four Seasons EP show a band that has taken a drastic approach in renovating their sound toward the progressive. Still quite long and multi-structured, KADDISFLY's tunes are driven with a flood of keyboard notes and mesmerizing/forceful guitars, not to mention a hefty rhythm here and there. While this isn't so much a surprise, there's no doubt that some of the techniques the band uses in these few songs show a keen improvement. The band's vocalist, as well, has improved mightily as he pushes the songs forward both with commanding, high-pitched vocals and subdued crooning. At this point, I'm convinced not to waste more words on this EP as the full-length will assuredly deserve more than a few paragraphs. All in all, The Four Seasons EP showcases KADDISFLY at their best, and I for one can not wait to hear the final results of this brief endeavor."

                                                              Even Pitchfork:

Portland, Oregon's Kaddisfly returns with the Four Seasons EP-- a prelude to their second full length Set Sail The Prairie-- which will be released in early 2007. This new music is a decidedly more advanced and mature musical effort that offers a sampling of what’s to come in 2007. Kaddisfly had undergone many changes since their signing to Sub City/Hopeless in 2004. Becoming a full-time band, relentlessly hitting the road, honing its musicianship on stages with myriad bands. This was what Kaddisfly wanted, worked for, and achieved, admittedly sometimes the hard way.

                                                                        http://www.skylinepress.net/review335.php

Their cheery and carefree song development is a clear sign of how devoted they are to making fun and enjoyable music. Ambient post rock scores amplify as their music surpasses the simple popular song and goes for a more prolific and everlasting feel. Believe me the names aren't just for show as each song has a title all its own that follow the words for each individual month, and both the month and the title play pivotal roles in how the song sounds. I love concept albums that are formed around solid and monolithic subjects. It is clear to see that time went into this as every note and racing melody is blueprinted for that exact spot and wasn’t meant for any other place. Let us not forget the talented vocals that add to the over all picture, as they are a force of nature and spread their kindness and rage across the project. Let the guitars not be forgotten as they also add so much in sonic charges and melodic waves.
I was simply amazing at the changing sound that I was hearing through out the album, it was almost like a compilation that many different bands had complied to put together, but it was all the incredible range that Kaddisfly represents. The catchy beat-fest that is "(Junio) Campfire," which streams together a woven tapestry of rich story and beauty for us all to see, is a perfect starting point of the album. June's warm and growing nature comes through the song and reenergizes our spirits. As we turn to the wildly different "(Desember) Snowflakes" we notice a cold and rigid exterior that relapses from solid and unmovable to a still and echoed somber. Much like the unforgiving storms of winter that gives us whipping winds and blank snow canvases for our creative nature, the song has contrasting personalities that guide it and make it so unpredictable. Another surprise would be the April month song "(Sì Yuè) Clockwork." A collection of tricky and technical fountains of fluid sound pour from the pickups and litter the street like newly moistened rain drops that hit and spread themselves out over everything. It truly puts faith that there is still some thinking going on when artists make albums.
I see a lot of song titles that are filled with their own self righteousness and that don't mean anything besides "what sentence looks cool enough to make people believe that we know what we are talking about." This album's core and musical impact is so far reaching that it is almost hard to give it just a few paragraphs of thought, as so much more can be said about how great and innovative it is. Intellectual titles that have thought placed upon them are constantly placed in the album and aren’t there to shock and awe but rather stand as a direction of where they went with it. Their music is much the same, as it plays to its own tune and doesn't follow the beaten path. And just forget that I talked about the track titles so much, this album with its outstanding guitars and percussion mixing with its crazy vocals, become a classic. Such a conquering and in-depth album is sure to act as a new benchmark for many new artist's ventures. Believe me, Kaddisfly's showers bring listeners musical flowers.

They are going out on the "Take Action Tour" soon (with mostly bands I really don't care for, and the tour doesn't hit my town), which I guess the album will be available for pre-order for $6 .  Otherwise, March 6th ain't too far away
