I need to wipe my entire drive including the Root Directory' s.

Anyone have any suggestions for some good and free utilities?

Do you want your files shredded or do you just want a clean slate to play with?

If you want a file shredder, I' ve got a few on a CD around here (somewhere). I could probably send one to you. For the life of me, I can' t remember the names of any of them, since I haven' t used them in a while, but I' ll get back to you on them...

They can still find those files?

but I' d like to know how to find files that have been erased. It seems to me if they didn' t get erased your HD would clog up?

Cuz I' ve sure lost shit I' d like to retrieve.

they' re there, just not part of the file tables.
but they' re physically on the drive...until they get written over by something else.

so if you really wanted to get rid of ...evidence...
you' d run a couple of low level formats in addition to gettin a prog to write 0s over every part of the HD.

....look for a prog called SpinRite, i think. itll scan the HD for the stuff thats there, but not " there"

I like DeBug. It removed all partitions and gets the drive ready for Format.

You can download it from Dells website. Do a search
                  http://support.dell.com/us/en/search/kbadv_search.asp
on Dells Knowledge Base website for " debug"

The program will create a bootable diskette.

Boot from the disk and run these commands.

From the A:\> prompt, type the following commands and press the <Enter> key after each command:

                  debug
                  -F 200 L1000 0
                  -A CS:100
                  xxxx:0100 MOV AX,301
                  xxxx:0103 MOV BX,200
                  xxxx:0106 MOV CX,1
                  xxxx:0109 MOV DX,80

NOTE: Type 80 for the Main hard drive - HD 0, or type 81 for the Second hard drive - HD 1

                  xxxx:010C INT 13
                  xxxx:010E INT 20
xxxx:0110 (Leave this line blank and press the <Enter> key)
                  -G

The message, Program terminated normally, appears.

Press the power button to turn off the computer.

When the computer starts again, the hard drive must be partitioned and formatted.

You realize during the install of redhat you can just tell it to wipe all partitions off the drive right?

I was just going to say that. Linux uses a completely different filesystem (ext2/3), so I don' t think you' ll have to worry. Unless you' re already using linux on that machine, but even then you can still format it from the install.

Well, the install was a success, but for some reason it' s not accepting my login attempts.

If you still need to kill the drive, use a util called Wipeout. Just do a google search for it, its free. I had a drive that had an older version of linux on it and even though I deleted all partitions, created new and formatted the disc like 3 times, I could start the machine and the Lilo boot screen would come up an start loading a kernal. Wipeout will kill it good.
