Just got back from Best Buy with my copy (they didn't have the cd though).  Now the real challange will be setting aside a good few hours to watch it.

Yeah, what is up with that?

I couldn't get mine yesterday. I could only go out at 10 pm last night, and the only store open was Borders, and they only had 2 in stock, and they were both sold.

The first set was pure eargasm. I can't remember when I heard something that impressive last time.

The second set wasn't quite that great. The orchestra souns horrible without the band, and even some moments with the band sounded a bit bad. Fortunately Sacrified Sons, Octavarium and Metropolis sound fine. And the Grand Finale of Six Degrees is also amazing.

And this version of 6DOIT has now entered the ranks of A Change of Seasons imo.  A fantastic dvd reminding me of memories from an amazing night.

I just read this here and wanted to second that feeling.  6DOIT was the first track I went to both on the CD and the DVD because I remember just about jumping out of my skin that night when the orchestra started with the overture.   I remember thinking at the show, "Hey, they haven't played this part of 6DOIT this entire tour.....WHOA!  THAT'S A STRING SECTION!  HOLY SHIT!"

The entire song though absolutely now ranks up there with A Change of Seasons as maybe my favorite song of theirs.  And to think, I've gotten to see them do it beginning to end live twice now - just like I'm sure some of you other NYers have as well.

I stayed up till 1:45 in the morning watching the entire thing (& I had to get up for work 5 hours later).  My reaction to the whole thing...

This just made me even more sick that I was unable to catch a show on this tour, let alone attend this show.  The video was great (even though I loved LaB, I perfer video to film), the sound was FLAWLESS!

Everybody was indeed on their A-game, especially James, who was almost entirely note-perfect.  The orchestra, what else can I say, definately an awesom way to end their 20th year on a bang.

The bonus material was great.  Despite the fact that I thought the band doccumentary could have been longer then an hour & could have been a LITTLE more in-depth, I thoroughly enjoyed it & would show it to anyone who was interested in some background info on the band.

Like Kevman said earlier, this is one of those moments where you just sit back, crack a smile & remember why you love this band so much.

Here's to 20 more great years!

3rd time around watching it. The sound is unblievable and all produced in 5 months .
Disc two confirmed my feelings with how the music industry interferes with the creation of music.  The industry almost took the future away from DT. Lucky Mike stood up to them. Anyway it's time for the 4th viewing.
Outstanding concert. Thanks

To those of you who were there -- when did the curtain go up revealing the orchestra? I didn't notice an obviously huge roar while they were playing Overture, so I am assuming it went up before they started?

This DVD is AMAZING! I wasn't expecting it to be this good. I wasn't one of the people creaming in anticipation the past month or two. I was at the show and loved it then. But the DVD of it is great!

If I would have spent $500 for just a DVD of the performance of 6DOIT it would have been well worth it.

Is it just my disc or does the DVD pause for a second at the 13:23 mark of 6DOIT (during the beginning of War Inside My Head)?

Just watched it tonight.

I particular, I have to give kudos to whoever mixed and mastered the sound.  Absolutely STUNNING sound quality on this one (and I'm an absurdly picky audiophile here, so coming from me this is high praise).  Everything was mixed just perfect, and the drums and guitar in particular was recorded wonderfully.

DT discs of late seem to have bad layer change location. i cant understand this. most movie dvds can "schedule" the layer changes on scene changes. and some concert dvds schedule the layer change in between songs.

why is it that on DT dvds, the layer change is in the middle of the song.
Trial of tears in budokan and now it seems in between 6DoiT.

Perhaps bad timing, manila. I don't know how much time they have to work with the layer change, but maybe it was tight and it was impossible to place between songs?

Aaaaghh, had a big reply and my session timed out! Oh well, the short version:

Didn't care for the CD version of Score. Haven't seent he DVD yet, but I thought the energy was completely lost and for some reason they tried to make a live recording sound like a studio album. Also why in the world cut out JLB talking in between songs? That's WHY you buy a live album, to feel the interaction between band and audience!

Thought the orchestra sounded blah. I'm sympatetic to many reasons why this could be: Money, lack of rehersal time (again, money), and loss of aspects of sound in a recording process. But I still can't help but think that not only did the orchstra play lackluster, but the orchstration was baffling as well. With SDOIT, you can basically just ask Jordan for the MIDI files, and then cut and paste, right? A few additions here and there, but really it should write itself. But, ugh, all the inner harmony was gone. All the color was gone. Even something like "Goodnight Kiss", which has no excuse not to sound BETTER in orchstral score, gets killed by silly instrumentation and arrangement. I have no idea how this happened, and I know it's easy to say "I could have done better myself" when yer sitting at a computer, but I can't help but listen and really think so.

Damn...

What else can I add about this DVD that everyone else hasn't said about it already? I guess just some personal highlights:

-Another Won FUCKING ROCKED! I remember when they pulled this one out and played it here in Phoenix... I thought it was kick ass then... but the version here is just phenomenal! And if the note James held at the end didn't make you stand up in your living room and cheer out loud, then chances are you may not have a pulse. On that note as well:

-James LaBrie himself... I know people have been echoing it quite a few times, but his performance here is the best I've ever heard on a DT live video. Under A Glass Moon, Afterlife, The Spirit Carries On... James brought his A-game for this night, no doubt. Three cheers for the Canuck!

-Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence was mindblowing... the Goodnight Kiss / Solitary Shell section of this song always made me teary-eyed, but the having the orchestra playing along with the band for the transitional part made it that much more emotional...

-The Sea of Lights during The Spirit Carries On ... what was I saying about tear-jerking emotional moments? Wow...

-Raise The Knife...I have to admit, I was bit skeptical about this one for the setlist. I always thought it was a cool song, but I never really felt it was a strong enough track for an album, or strong enough of a track to be included on a 20th Anniversary DVD... I take that back after having watched them peform it here. In fact, this version blows the original right out of the water.

-Metropolis w/ The Orchestra - 'Nuff said.

Oh, and I gotta agree with Shadowfax on the mix... excellent job, especially on the CD too... you can pick out all the instrumentation pretty clearly, even the strings on the orchestra as well. Great job for such a short window of time!

All in all, I give this one 6 Ass n' Balls out of 5.

Score is unbelievable.

Now, was anyone else surprised or just intrigued by the SOFTNESS of the Continuum??  I always thought it was a hard shell, maybe fiberglass or some kind of hard plastic, but it looks like a stretchy pad of spandex or something.  I know its a small aside but I thought it was interesting.

In any event, it sounds great, the band sounds great, JLB sounds just as good as I remembered him being that night, and overall the dvd is solid.

I got my copy of the cd and dvd in the mail yesterday afternoon and locked myself in my room to watch the concert straight through (of course with a 15 minute pause for intermission).

Now, if being there at the show (front row keyboard side, you can see me during About to Crash and a lot of other parts, not the least the end of the show when Jordan is shaking that guy's hands, I'm right next to him to the left of JR)....if being there wasn't enough magic and enough amazingness, this dvd just rounded out the end.

Sound - incredible.  Video - incredible.  Set - appropriate and a great setlist.  Performance - perfect.  James LaBrie - Awesome fucking vocalist.  JP - amazing.  MP - amazing.  JR - amazing. JM - amazing.  Orchestra - orgasmic.

Six Degrees was the highlight for me since it was the first DT song I ever heard and probably my favorite "epic".  This night was just magical...the vibe in the audience, spirit carries on!!!!!!!

This DVD chilled me right till the end, it was great and imo far better than LAB for a couple reasons.  LAB was a great dvd, however, I feel that the camera angles on SCORE were more intimate and you can really see the band play their asses off with the shots they took.  It was great being able to see the guy go around the drumset, zooming in on JP and JR and JM hands and being able to see them playing their amazing solos and really having it put them in the spotlight for that time.

The audience was amazing...I keep remembering looking out that night during Spirit Carries On and getting shivers in my spine from all the lighters, cell phones, the hands swaying, everyone singing their asses off to end the first half and then everyone screaming when the curtains rose for the second half...

Absolutely no complaints here - I can never get enough Dream Theater.  Thank you Mike Portnoy and of course, the rest of the band, for all your hard work in a orgasmic culminating show and an equally orgasmic DVD/CD live set.

The orchestra sounded a bit out-of-tune to me at times, especially towards the beginning.
I wonder what the reasons might be for this - maybe they did not have an opportunity to tune to the concertmaster as is standard practice for an orchestral concert?
Does anyone who was in attendance, sitting close to the stage, have any idea if this was done, or would they have tuned up backstage (subjecting instruments to temperature variation, etc, on the way to the stage)?
I'm also curious about how much prep/rehearsal time the orchestra had, and how the orchestra was composed.  Had they played together regularly before, or did they come together for this gig?
Too bad they didn't quite nail it with their performance, but having the orchestra was a fantastic idea.  As someone with a strong appreciation for classical music and orchestral performances, I really enjoyed hearing DT play with the orchestra.  Great stuff...
I would be cool to hear Symphony X do it with The Odyssey one of these days...

Score is incredible.

I rushed to Borders on Tuesday to get it, only to be frightened when I couldn't find it.  I asked someone to look, and they had *ONE* copy of each in stock.  Jesus, I can't believe only having one copy of ANYTHING on a release day.  I'm sure DT could sell even better if they were stocked.

maybe it was a world class band, being together with a non-world class orchestra. did you notice that the orchestra's name is "Octavarium Orchestra?" which kinda suggests that it was just put together for this show.
Its not like "The New York Philharmonic" or "The New York Symphony" (if any of those two exists anyways) which is an institution and wouldn't allow their name to be changed.

Unlike Metallica's S&M, which was with the "San Francisco Symphony" and not the "Load Orchestra"

as you may have said, it might have been the lack of money.

Overall, it's a good DVD Mix is awesome! I personally like the Budokan setlist, "film look" and directing more though. As always, DT was flawless in Score. Orchestra with Metropolis was the best IMO. Keep up the good work DT!

PS. I will need to check it out a couple more times for it to sink in...but it's first impression is good!

After watching the dvd, and of course paying attention to what I like to call the "nitpickers delight" such as the differences between LaB and this(cine look in LaB, setlist, orchestration arrangements) and this is what I have to say:

LaB was in support of Train of Thought, obviously, which was a dark heavy album, so the feel of this release was definately the Dark and heavy side of DT, with a few softies in there and Score, which was in support of Octavarium and celebrating 20 years, had a range of soft to heavy, but mostly keeping it mellow and smooth the entire way through. I Walk Beside You, Innocence Faded, The Spirit Carries on, Six Degrees(the most part), The Answer Lies Within, Sacrificed Sons, and Octavarium(I, II, and V) represent the softer more melodic side of DT.

Overall, this is a great DVD with a great Setlist, the orchestra was a bit rusty at first but they opened up and kicked ass.

I definately recommend this for any die hard Dream Theater fan, and for those who don't necessarily prefer the heavier side as well.

I haven't managed to watch the whole DVD yet, but I just can't get over the awesomeness of the fact that JLB sounds as good on this DVD as he sounded when I saw DT in Wolverhampton last October. I don't even care if there were overdubs because I saw this show live and I KNOW that JLB was singing exactly like this (if not even better).

I can't describe how happy I am to have a DVD of this truly STUNNING performance. Hats off, James.

I know I am kinda late with this BUT YESTERDAY I FINALLY GOT SCORE!!! My aunt finally arrived from the States and gave it to me as a present from my other aunt in Miami

Last night I popped the discs into my home theater and started with the documentary and then the show. The sound is really amazing, so clear. Regarding to the video quality, it is indeed clearer than Budokan(As someone else said Budokan looks more like a movie while Score has like a warmer and clearer look), wich I liked better, but still score´s its awesome and really adapts to the venue and setlist.

The looks and plays awesome as always, La Brie is the best in the DVD IMO. Jordan playing with all his stuff including analog keyboard was great to see. Myung and Petrucci playing around in Octavarium was nice to see, Myung´s lines on Another Won were just . I really dug petrucci´s solos, the feeling that he putted a lot of feeling in them. Mike was too fucking pumped, the man was just hyped jumping, singing, tossing and playing around with the sticks without missing the beat, he looked like he was having a hell of a time. And last but not least, I liked how the whole orchestra melted with the band serving mostly as a background element to enhance the sound.

So yep this is an awesome dvd.. My favorite of the band right now. Despite the discs came loose inside the plastic wrapped box, and a minor scratch (it didn´t let me play IF since the first chorous and the first half of SS) that I managed to remove without affecting the dvd at all, its all good.

Gotta go for a 2nd run

I hadda bump this; it just seems the Score appreciation threads are fading off page 1 way too quickly.

SilverKraken, that seems to be a common finding. I bought my copy at the local Best Buy and it too had a disc loose in there (fortunately no scratching though!)

I got to thinking about the whole "James vocals were totally re-done/pitch corrected" issue. I'm thinking even if MP wanted to completely overhaul JLB's vox, the funds ($$) simply wouldn't be there. That shit is expensive on a large scale. DT is not a large band with huge amounts of $ to blow (although I'm sure they do well). I wouldn't be suprised if there were minor 'fixes' here and there though. And sure... James' vocals seem to have a lot of the wet removed or not present in the overall sound, but that doesn't indicate they were re-done.

Okayyyy,

Just cuz I've seen this mentioned a few times.. and there's really no topic about it; this is in in regards to the look between Budokan and Score.

.. now, I read before that someone said Budokan was filmed in 24p (24fps) and Score in 30fps... but that doesn't explain the difference in looks. Infact, both were shot in 24p. 30 frames per second looks like butt. If you want to see what that looks like, get out your old VHS camera. 30 frames looks terrible. Its the standard in the US for tv but even most tv is switching to the HD format or atleast 24 frames. Yes, it does give you that more cinematic look and feel like the movies. Most importantly, it gives you a smoother feel and look on motion. If you saw anyone move in 30 frames.. it looks terrible. Like bad home movies.

The big difference is the quality of the camera. It looks like Budokan was shot in HD and possibly down converted to standard definition.. which still looks infinitely better than standard definition. Score was not shot on such high end cameras. Not to say that Score looks bad, but that's why there's the difference in the looks. Budokan is very sharp, Score has a warmer feel. Besides, some of the cameras were definetly a DVX... atleast the stuff doing the crowd shots. At the end of disc 2's documentary.. I was the guy jumping in the grey hoodie [very last shot long shot].. that camera went right by me. I'm a film major and I use that camera all the time. Its a great camera, but visually nothing compares to it like HD.

Sorry for the long rant.. but its been eating at me for days.

The song Octavarium elevated itself to a classic prog tune for me with the infusion of the Orchestra, along with Jordan's slide guitar playing.  I'm loving what appears to be a subtle Steve Howe/Yes influence ala Relayer (~To Be Over) right when the song starts to take off, in combining the orchestra and the slide guitar.

It goes without saying that 6DOIT as a whole was probably may favorite part of the show.  The beginning is very classy and majestic.  Seeing the orchestra integrated in the song so often adds much value to the presentation of this Epic.  So many memorable sounds and moments.  Too much to articulate.  It was a great move in making at a 41-minute, 1 track song on the DVD and CD.  How it was meant to be represented, imo.  For me, this version of 6DOIT is the 21st century Days Of Future Passed with an edge, and then some.

Innocence Faded was another highlight.  Love the riffing, vocals, and that Drama-esque keyboard sound at the end.

The Root Of All Evil was total thunder and pounding insanity to hear and experience.  Among the most intense moments I experienced at the show happened there, esp. when the heavy guitar started.  Perfect way to start any show (or A Fortune In Lies or As I Am of course).  Somewhere along the way this became among my favorites, and has great staying power in that respect.

The orchestra in Sacrificed Sons takes the song to another level for me.  Many ominous moments here.  This version for me is an improvement over the studio...same with Octavarium and the orcehstra.

I've got CD, but not yet the DVD. Still waiting on it cause it hasn't been released here in Aus yet.

At which point in UAGM did JP drop out? And for how long was it? They obviously did a good job in relpacing the missing part because I havn't noticed a thing yet. I want to know so I can listen to the exact part carefully to see if its at all noticable. Also, did it just drop out from a technical fault? Or did the lead/wireless/whatever he uses just fall out or something?

Sounds so great! Love TROAE. Brilliant opening - so energetic, and really gets the audience going.

Another Won has become a favourite!

only problem i have is the audio and video aren't in sync :| it gets worse towards the end.. dunno what's wrong, is it the player or what :/

i didn't watch disc two yet..

Do you have the DVD in PAL or NTSC format?
My Images And Words Live In Tokyo/5 Years In A Live Time DVD has the same problem, probably due to the fact that it’s NTSC format. This is why I ordered Score in PAL format at Amazon.com UK. It arrived today and guess what… they sent me the NTSC-version!!!  So far every .com store in Europe I checked (except for Amazon UK) is selling Score in NTSC format. After what happened today I’m starting to think Score is not available in PAL format? Someone (Mike?) PLEASE enlighten me on this matter???

After watching Octavarium two or three times now, and especially the cartoon on the bonus disc, i can't get it out of my head. I really start to dig it more and more. Today alone i watched 8V on Score and listened to it twince on the studio album

At first i had to get used to it, because it's a more softer DVD compared to the other ones. But i like it a lot and it starts to grow on me more and more. I'm a drummer, but i love the finish on JP's guitar in RTK and 6DoiT

Score is most definately not 24p. When I was capturing still shots I had to correct the interlaced tearing. Also it doesn't look like 24 either.  60i IS the standard in US and a lot of reality shows shoot in that format. Most primetime drama/sci fi shows are indeed shot at 24p and have pulldown added to play at NTSC standard of 60i. BUT even 30p looks different than 60i. 30fps does not look bad like you say, infact I believe Startrek: The Next Generation was shot on film at 30fps. Score doesn't look like it was shot in 24p or 30p but rather 60i. The cam on Mike's drums looks like the Canon XL-H1 or XL2 (but I've been told by some one who worked on it that it was shot in HD which would rule out XL2) Also rules out your hypothesis that DVX's were used, unless it is the HVX which I haven't really looked into much.

even if its shot on 24p, if its then formatted for ntsc you will see interlacing on the still shots. Ive shot a couple of short films and a video on an XL2, in 24p and after exporting it to DVD it comes out as interlaced video :dunno:

Yes if you make the DVD in NTSC, but the DVD format also supports 24p and 30p. If the video was shot 24p they should have mastered it to 24p on the DVD.(you can actually fit a bit more video in that mode.)  Either way it still looks 60i to me.

Whew. Finally found a copy last night. After visiting about six different stores locally (Best Buy, CD World, Coconuts, Circuit City, Barnes & Noble, Target) I called the FYE at the mall and they had one copy, they held it for me behind the counter and I picked it up last night.

Haven't watched yet, promised my bro-in-law I'd watch it with him since he had to miss the show.

For the record, L@B was shot and edited 1080/60i then converted to 1080/23.98psf to give it the filmatic blur. Score was shot and edited 1080/23.98psf Then both were down converted to NTSC for DVD. All SD NTSC DVD  playback at 29.97i the progressive is a playback function only. NO DVD's are authered in progressive formats. With Blu-Ray or HDDVD that's another story.
As far as the "look" of the two shows, this was a directorial decsion decided before each show was shot. L@B was to have a more "movie" look while Score was to have a more "you are there" look. As far as the cameras, Score actually had much higher quality cameras used.

i havent had the problem because i have an SD tv set, but my friend has an HDTV setup with an HD dvd and he complains that there is tons of "macroblocking" on the DVD and looks very "compressed" . while L@B looks awewsome on the same setup.  any thoughts on that?

it looks beautiful on my SD big screen though, so i cant complain.

I was the guy jumping in the grey hoodie [very last shot long shot].. that camera went right by me. I'm a film major and I use that camera all the time. Its a great camera, but visually nothing compares to it like HD.

Sorry for the long rant.. but its been eating at me for days.

Thanks! me and my frien were disscussing this, but didn't understand all the technicalities. You described them exactly how we perceived them.

Then how do you explain the fact that you can fit more video on a dvd set to 24 progressive than 60 interlaced? When I shoot 24p advanced and then edit it on a 24p timeline and take it into dvd authoring software and set the dvd format to 23.97 mode, then how can that not be mastering to 24 progressive? What happens is that the dvd plays at 24 progressive and adds 3:2 pull down to make your tv happy.

I searched for this on the Forum but I couldn't find anything answering this question, "Did anyone find any Easter Eggs on the DVD?"  If so, post them.

Yeah, if there were an easter egg with footage of the Radio City Rockettes doing a kickline in front of DT while they play "The Mirror", I'd definitely like to see that...

After this show, Another Won And Raise The Knife shot up to among those of my favorite DT songs.  All the heavy songs played at RCMH hit the mark in a big way for me especially.  I had only heard Another Won on a few boots of the March 2006 shows, so I was still becoming familiar with it.  Raise The Knife is a really strong song musically and lyrically.  I hope both are played more often also in future tours.  Related to Another Won,  I now have all the Demo Series CDs from YtseJam, and have to say I really listen to the demo versions more than the studio version now.  The core of drums, guitar and bass really brings it together in those demos.  Love that edgy sound i.e. WDADU and demos.  Very happy these demos are on CD.

I was listening again yesterday, closely to the lyrics... and it struck me how fitting it was for the band to mark 20 years with the song.  It's a statement on their commitment to the collective vision they have as artists and a reminder that compromise to the industry's fickle whims is out of the question.  Bravo!
Baldrick, what begins with "Come here" and ends with "Ow"?

Wow thats all I can say.  I kind of questioned the track selection (to myself) when I heard the set list.  Well fuck a duck never mind my question (to myself).

Just sat thru my first view & listen thru on the computer and I must say can't wait to watch on 5.1 surround sound.

Great DVD Mike & Gang.

Got mine this week. I love it. Unluckily the manufacturer had f**cked up the second dvd (bad printing) but the disk itself plays fine. I`m such a perfectionist, you know.

Overall I`m very happy with it. Thank you MP and DT.

I haven't bothered to read through every reply to this thread but as far as  my DVDs are concerned they were "scored" literally. I got mine through CD Now and while the CDs were fine both DVDs were - well fukked.
The first disc came away from the centre holder during transit and has a lot of deep scratches in it . I've got a few glitches from that but it was the second disc that really stunned me. I was 53 minutes into the doco and it starts to miss and skip, image degradation - the works. Then it just stops dead - trying to fast forward, stop anything doesn't happen - you have to eject it from the machine to get it going again.

Then when I try and access the bonus material any one of them sees the first scene come up and it again just locks up - anyone else have these problems.

Both my disc1 and disc2 have been destroyed. turned cloudy and has not been readable.

Its an R1 copy.

Rhino has given me  a replacement for Disc 1 but after some time, it also turned bad!

Are there others who have experienced this?
