DREAM THEATER SCORE - coming 8/29/06!

just got my copies of the cd and the dvd....my cd came with 2 disk 3's....and no disk 2....anybody else experience this?


As for the DVD and the cd(at least disk 1 which is all that i have heard so far)....absolutely amazing....Mike, you and the gang have once again out done yourselves.....i am so proud to be a DT fan and happy to see you guys doing well.....hope you sell millions of copies!!!!!!

As for Mike you always go out of your way to please your fans and it is much appreciated ...thanx for all u do!!!

Ordered the DVD Today...

Just got back from Best Buy with my copy (they didn't have the cd though).  Now the real challange will be setting aside a good few hours to watch it.

'tis intermission for me. what a great show!

I've got the dvd on pause. I grabbed some dinner, now I'm checking in on the forum.

Soon I'll wash the dinner dishes, then finish disc 1 and onto disc 2!

Afterwards I'll retire to my room where I'll spend the night listening to the cd and doing unlady-like things.

Got the CD and DVD delivered by UPS today from CD Universe, now I only have to wait till tomorrow to see it. Cant' wait!

I thought that the mix rocks hard as well, but there's just a tad too much reverb/live vibe to it IMO. And at places it sounds pretty "boomy" and well reverbed. But that's just me I guess.

 

First watch of the DVD...I'm FLOORED.

The logistics of putting something like this together must have been daunting. Hats off to Mike for all his hard work.
I wish I was there so this is the next best thing.

Labrie has switched to a condenser mic for live perormance, maybe that has something to do with it.  I know its a fancy mic and all, but I would think that a condenser will pick up a lot of sound from the PA and the other instruments.  That could account for the extra reverb.

Anyone know if this could be the case?

It's not just James. It's the whole sound that sounds "too live", if you know what I mean.

I wonder whats going through the minds of some of those older orchestra players.  I'm sure this kind of a thing is new to them. I wonder if they have even heard of DT?

I know it's been said other places, but I wanted to put in my 2 cents about the band's performance.. especially James. All 5 of these rock Gods were on their A game that night. I don't think I've ever heard James sound as great live as he does on this DVD. This is his best live performance ever, hands down - IMO. Also Mike, JP, JM and Jordan were top notch! I know they always are, but it just seemed like they had a nearly flawless night. I say "nearly" because if I don't, someone will come back and point out something they did wrong. I just didn't hear it at all. Just a fantastic performance. Quite possibly inhuman.

Im trying to think the order I want to watch the dvd in...The actuall concert first and then the documentary leading up to it or vice versa. People who have seen both, got any recomendations?

I watched the documentary first. Then, the rest of the extras. Then, the concert.

Finally had to force myself to take a dinner break after "Raise the Knife"... so hard to yank myself away from the dvd!!!  By gawd this concert is fierce, exquisite joy!!!  The guys look and sound pumped and THE FANS....................

This DVD has a special something that just makes me feel good.  I loved it.  I was there that night, and seeing this dvd I felt like i was seeing it for the first time.  It's weird,  I only remember feeling like i was part of something special.

Video wise, LaB is superior since it looks as though it was shot with high definition 24p cameras.  That gives it the film like quality.  Score looks like 30 fps video, not quite as impressive.  I think the sound mixes are comparable.  But the one thing that makes Score stand out is the performances by everyone.  James = good god!

THIS IS INSANELY GOOD. I don't care that the orchestra isn't spot on perfect, Overture and all of 6doit have just been had a lump in my throat all nite. It was worth every second of the wait...I'm diggin' it. Thanks again to Mike and the boys.

Oh, and wtf was that guy in the front row..white shirt, perfect hair? He's hot!

Ya know, technically that may be true... but the video look to me is so intimate and engaging.  Plus the fans freaking out makes "Score" more viscerally satisfying IMHO.  Fabulous.!

This says pretty much every thing I came on here to say.I just gone done watching it too (waited for the wife and kiddies to go to bed so I could watch it in peace with the surround sound blasting).I enjoyed 6DOIT and the instrumental section of Metropolis (one of the few parts of the mp3.com spoiler stream I didn't let myself listen to beforehand) even more than I thought I would.
 
One question/small complaint - Did anyone else notice Jame's voice sounded a bit weird on Solitary Shell?It had a sound to it like someone took an eq and boosted all the high mids and highs.It had almost an AM radio kind of tone to it.It sounded like it had a lot more reverb/delay on it than on the rest of the show too.Anyone else know what was going on there?Maybe a possible problem with his mic? 
 
Anyway,great dvd.Blows Budokan out of the water in every way except picture quality (I really like Budokan's "movie" look).

Both were shot in HD by the same production company...the only difference was that the film crew was American, not Japanese....I heard Portnoy himself tell this to Eddie Truck backstage after 4/1.

I also seriously doubt LaB was 24P....there are way too many crane shots that do not go out of focus....shooting in 24 Frames is not something you can just do without practicing the camera move first because everything needs to be flawless...movement in 24 Frames shots can get out of focus very easily....one of the reasons shots take soo long on movies to set up....it may have been 24, you never know.

im pretty sure its 24p, it looks almost like film, and we know it wasnt film so the closest thing would be HD 24p right? As for the focus thing, i would thnk that if there's enough light and w/ the right lenses/aperture you can shoot in 24p and have nice crane/jib shots without having to worry about focus too much. I helped a friend shoot a video in 24p and it had a lot of jib shots and there were really no focus problems at all. I love the look of Score and i really dig the really wide angle lenses used on some of the crane shots, and yes iMO the "video look" is more "visceral" while the 24p is almost clinical in the sense that it makes you feel like youre watching a film rather than a live concert, but darned if LAB didnt look oh so beautiful anyway

So many moments w/ the orchestra made me tear up like a little girl

There is a poster by the name of Bob S. that claims to have worked on both LaB and Score.  Very insightful stuff from the video side of things, but yes 24 p for both.

There is a lot more in depth info in the thread, check it out.  It's a good read.  I wonder if he is a poster here as well.  My take:  I like both looks of both DVD's.  I think the very clean more brightly lit look of Score works for the intimacy of having the orchestra, and the venue.  I think the film look, darker more rock show of Budokan is perfect due to how large the venue is.

shredi knight: YES!  I noticed this immediately. Sounds weird. Something is definately funky with this.

I was curious with some of the close up shots of JP during the end of Octavarium, during the guitar runs, they had a few close up shots and you can see him flipping the pick in his right hand, sort of turning/rotating it as he played.

Wonder if that is just him regripping or to fight fatigue but it sure looks like it adds a degree of dificulty to his game.??
