Are you a stereotypical metalhead?
-
Monday, May 22, 2006 7:17 PM
I'm certainly not. When my friends ask me what I listen to and I show them while driving in my truck, they look at me like I'm insane. I'm a drumline/band nerd and hang out with such types mostly, but I also have "preppy" acquaintences. I don't have long hair, or wear band shirts all the time...mainly because my high school has a dress code forbiding everything but a collared shirt and jeans (don't get me started) and I look strikingly average. I also hunt or fish damn near every weekend. I assume there's many more like me in here...could be interesting to see what kind of people we have in this here forum.

If I was *still* a stereotypical Metalhead at 35 years old, folks would have a different name for me - loser.

My school has a dress code as well, but we're limited to a specific uniform. We do have days where we can wear whatever we want and I'll break out a band shirt and baggy jeans. The only thing I can think of that makes me non-stereotypical is the fact that I listen to a wide variety of metal, from death to power, and in between. Most of the metalheads at my school stick to either Thrash or Power Metal, while I like that stuff, in combination with Prog, Death, and various other types that combine all types.

Same here. During the Grunge era(Or as I call it, the dark ages), I was always wearing a Black band Tshirt (Metallica, Slayer, Morbid Angel, NIN, etc...) with jeans and occasionally combat boots. That was part of the reason I went to Military school and I'm now in the military, so I can't really "Look the part" as far as long hair, facial hair and all that. I can't wait to retire so I can grow the mullet that I always wanted.

Definitely not a typical metalhead. Most days I wear semi-nice jeans and a polo shirt or just a plain Gap shirt and I keep my hair buzzed most of the year.

Yes, right down to the Lynrd Skynrd and Metallica t-shirts, black hi-top tennis shoes and crazy tight jeans. Now really, how many of you fools believed THAT one?? I am not the typical anything.

I'm an Earth Science teacher... sooo nope! I've got a short/clean haircut, I wear polo shirts. I surf too... so my baggier surf clothes look kind of "skaterish"... but certainly not metal. My dorky shirt and tie to work every day dont really fit the metalhead bill either... If my students could only hear my rocking out to some STRAPPING YOUNG LAD or DILLENGER ESCAPE PLAN or some PANTERA.... yes they would probably question my sanity and be VERY surprised.... I love that. On another note... do those of you who do not look like typical metal heads get the most surprised reactions from people when they find out what music you listen to? "Dude you look like you listen to Coldplay and Dave Matthews Band... I cant believe you listen to that kind of music" So just because I listen to metal I have to wear all black, have six piercings, long hair and a full beard? (Not that there is anything wrong with that) Appearances can be decieving (And I love coldplay and dmb by the way too...)

I have the long hair, and I can proudly say I used to be one(ripped jeans, metallica t-shirt, shit-kickers) but now I tend to dress more casually...the long hair never lies though

I was until I cut my hair. Now I'm just short haired white trash. We managed to get our 64 year old substitute teacher rockin' out to DT one day. He liked it too.
Unlike the rest, I'm actually this much of a jerk in real life.

I've gotten many "dude, you look like a Backstreet Boy and like you listen to Reggaeton, electronica and coreographed pop!". Until they get in the car and have their preppie eardrums blasted away by Opeth. Nope, not stereotypical. I appreciate the luxuries of fine clothing and comfortable wears. I wear band shirts often, but I also frequent the skate and 'fine polo shirts'. Jeans or baggy pants are a constant though.

I have a mop-top/jewfro and a goatee, but I'm always in a plain T-shirt with jeans or Khakis, or a hoodie if it's cold. It's an interesting compromise, actually, because people actually suspect I like Progressive Rock before Metal.

Well, I do listen to some metal and prog metal, but im definitely not a metalhead in the first place. I generally dont like bands with no variety as i find so many of the metal bands play basically same sounding songs over and over again. I wear my DT shirts quite a lot, and have a lot of pride in the bands i like though..

I somewhat am I always wear band shirts and I'm considered an outsider because I'm not well liked at my school. I'm known as the "music/drummer" guy at school but I don't get drunk and listen to hair bands on VH1 Classic and I don't go orslaughter sheep then f*** them then burn down all the churches in the surrounding area I'm more along the lines of the listen to kickass metal and learn how to play it metalhead

I'm just one of those kids with short hair who wears random t-shirts and other clothing which don't co-relate at all and are pretty random in nature. In the end, I'm horribly unfashionable, but not really a stereotypical anything, except maybe dirty greaseball.
Let's work without theorizing, it's the only way to make life bearable.

I have long hair. I wear band name T-shirts only occasionally on those days I'm mostly at home and not showing myself among too many people. I have no spikes, chains or other metallic gadgets. I like black colour, but I often were white, grey and light brown. I don't like shiny colours. I like to go to metal pubs with my friends and band members - even those dark holes full of nastyness, people with everything black with those spikes and shit, where really extreme music is being played on really crappy speakers. We just like to go there from time to time, probably just to remember our young and wild times when we were REAL metalheads. So, that's me. I think I still am a bit of a metalhead and I like it. I don't think I'm very stereotypical though.

Not really, I used to be when I was in high school, thats where I was struck by the heavy metal music, so I was pretty fan of it. But now 22, I just dont feel like getting long hair and wearing all black clothes. I just have a casual style per say, loose jeans, a band t-shirt once in a while you know....but I do love metal to the end, but I dig other kinds of music too, so in terms of music Im pretty open minded.

Most metalheads I know don't have longhair anymore. They're just a bunch of perpetually drunk and arrogant fratboys, sporting tribal tattoos and overpriced Hot Topic clothes, spouting an endless stream of racism, homophobia, and illiterate ramblings. Of course, that's half of suburbia in the Mid-west.
Good? Bad? I'm the guy with the gun.

I was about 10 years ago. I had the long hair, the faded blue jeans, and the vast array of faded metal concert tee shirts. I still have the shirts, and the jeans are now a little more fashionable. But I have short hair and dress a little better.

I really haven't changed much either, I still mostly wear jeans and t-shirts. Often times concert shirts and even *gasp* tye dyes. I could care less about fashion that's for damn sure. I meant the whole "stereotypical" thing - i.e. leather jacket, studs or spikes (well not too many guys wear those any more do they?), boots, tats, piercings, etc... I think I would just feel ridiculous.
And all the science I don't understand It's just my job 5 days a week

I would guess not because everyone is shocked when they learn I listen to metal. The overwhelming response is "I thought you listen to Phish and stuff like that!" To which I reply, "I do!" But I'm sure some days I look like a metalhead. I dont really have a set style; one day I'll wear nice jeans with a button-down shirt, the next day I'll wear ragged jeans with a Slayer shirt, and then the next day I'll wear shorts and a road race t-shirt, so I imagine it's pretty hard to pin me down on any one category. But even though my hair is pretty shaggy right now, everyone says I'm too happy and nice and outgoing to be a metalhead.

ORIGINAL: thorbahn ORIGINAL: Govt_Property with jeans and occasionally combat boots. One of my pet peeves is definitely people who wear combat boots..me being a soldier myself. Why? Theres just.... no logic behing that. I wear combat boots because they are comfy and I can wear them at work! I love my Polish Riot Police boots! Amazing in a gig too! Protects the toes like nothing else I wouldn't consider myself a stereotypical metalhead, but defo a metal head. My hair is long, but usually tied back in a bun, I wear baggy black jeans/green or black cargo pants and the obligitory "obscure" (read: Opeth/DT/PoS) band t-shirt.
I can't take the staring and the sympathy, and I don't like the questions,
"How do you feel?"//"How's it going in school?"//"Do you wanna talk about it?"

my typical image. long hair, goatee, big nose, PRS Polo shirt, khaki pants, and these shoes http://www.3ride.com/images/products/shoes/orc_van_blk.jpg .. not really a metalhead image... people usually think i listen to all the popular punky stuff... thrice, thursday, my chemical buttsex, fall out boy, yellowcard. and whatever else the emo kdis around here listen to.

I used to sport the early 90s/ late 80s metalhead look... i had me some black cowboy boots with chains and metal toes and yes, a considerably long mullet. Along with jeans that now look like they were a bit too tight and long sleeve untucked shirts over a black tshirt (think the Take The Time video)... Sadly, that look was embraced by tex-mex type bands during the grunge era, during wich I went with the baggier jeans, untucked plaid shirt and combat boots... These days, I'm letting my hair grow out, and because of work I'm required to dress semi/formal, yet I'll always be wearing some sort of black shirt/sweater/polo shirt/tshirt, jeans (torn ones on the weekends usually) and blue-suede hiking boots. You wear your metal in your soul man. The outside is secondary. I have spoken.

i spose "typical" follows a certain trend no matter what decade... Long hair (wether mullet or all one length), band tops and attitude hehe beards are more 90's where as leather and chains is more 80's along with tight jeans which is 70's to 80's

I am a stereotypical me. lol I guess if you saw me on the streets I'd be pretty nondescript. Usually wearing a (good) t-shirt and jeans, sometimes I bust out the polo, or in summer i'll sport the khaki/denim cargo shorts.....I guess I almost dress like a stereotypical prep/jock. I like American Eagle/Aeropostale/Old Navy, and I rarely, if ever, look like a "Metalhead." That being said, it never seems to surprise people when they ride with me and I crank the Pain of Salvation or DT or Opeth or Tool or Porcupine Tree (ok, maybe not so metal there) or whatever it is that tickles my fancy for the day. As a matter of fact, my friends have a running joke about me listening to Spock's Beard....Oh well. Occasionally I'll bust out the Incubus or A7X or Coldplay, and I've even developed a tolerance for rap in small doses. I guess I try to be diverse in my musical tastes, but sometimes I find it hard. Ok I'm rambling now...I feel like I'm in one of those Radio Shack commercials with the red chair. Next!

I think I am once again. I stopped being one for like two years, then Opeth came to town... I bought every single t-shirt (excpet the gilry one) And I started wearing them a lot. Theb I started buying more and more... Now my main wardrobe consists of Opeth and DT shirts. I guess I will be for a few years, I really like my band shirts, no matter how improper they are . I do dress casually very often, but I can't deny I mostly look like a metal d00d.

I never could grow my hair long, and these days I wear a very short buzz cut year round. I call it the wash-n-wear haircut. I haven't worn a concert shirt in over a decade (anyone else remember when that's the ONLY place you could get the shirts and you wore them like a badge of honor after the show?). Just not really my style anymore, I guess. Plus it would be hard to explain the Cannibal Corpse shirt to my 5 year old, and it would make the 2 year old have nightmares.
I never submitted the whole system of my opinions to the creed of any party of men whatever in religion, in philosophy, in politics, or in anything else where I was capable of thinking for myself. Such an addiction is the last degradation of a free and moral agent. -Thomas Jefferson, letter to Francis Hopkinson, March 13, 1789

No way! Ballet (pointe) for 14 years, band geek(marching band) in highschool (flute and pic), competitive dancing (jazz, tap, modern) nationally and internationally (US Dance team). A nerd: as in I love to stock up on notecards and highlighters they make me smile Just going to Staples for back to school supplies makes me happy and all those new books ahhh!! Weird I know but hey what can I say? Besides being introduced to many different music styles from dance and band classes my dad was always playing classical to disco and my mom...she likes the rock. So I got Classic rock likes from her...Led Zep, Styxs, Boston (which is where my name came from), Journey, Pink Floyd "The Wall" , and Rush was her favorite and on the way to be dropped off to dance classes all those years I guess it seeped in. Then about 3 years ago my "ex" introduced me to DT and I went to a concert with him in Boston on April fools day 04...I was completely hooked. He is gone but my love for DT lives on! I have since gone to 2 other DT concerts and even took my mom to Gigantor...we had a blast. She and I saw Rush last year too. I also like and have seen AvengeSeven Fold, GodSmack (Boston locals), Def lep, Nickleback, Three door down and others. I like to support local artists too. I don't have the "look" as I am 5 2" 120lbs blonde and blue eyed. I can't find concert shirts to fit for reg wear so I just use them as night shirts. I typically dress up for concerts but you will find me in the pitt rocking out. I just don't like how big guys think it is funny to lift me up and move me around like a rag doll....but it has landed on stage once and right in front of a body guard. He reached up took me from this huge guy and said hey little lady why don't you stand right here in front of me worked for me, front and center. So from now on I get one of my biggest guy friends to tag along. Most people think I am a top 40 girl...yeah some of it I will listen to from time to time but my love is rock and that is what I listen to daily......some good music and some notecards = happy girl Amanda
Be nice to me, I could be your nurse one day!

Check, a Tool shirt for every day of the week course I do have a handful of other shirts including my 8v world tour shirt :) Call me old fashion but It's comfortable to not give a shit about what I look like as long as it's comfy it's wearable for me.

I don't think I ever was a stereotypical metalhead. I never had really long hair and I was never one for wearing bands T-shirts, torn clothes or dressing all in black. The closest I came to the "metalhead" image, probably, was by having my left ear pierced...

ORIGINAL: yessurf I'm an Earth Science teacher... (Not that there is anything wrong with that) Appearances can be decieving (And I love coldplay and dmb by the way too...) Well, I am a lawyer so EVERYDAY I wear a suit an tie. So no. But I get weird looks at record stores when I'm browsing the metal section. Also, when people get into my car and get a full blast of Pantera, they always look very surprised. I like to secretly put INTO THE PIT (live, played by Halford) and blast it at full volume whenever there's a newbie at my car .

Nope. I'm a clean cut black guy with a shaved head who normally wears a tucked in polo shirt and khaki pants... no one would guess that I own and still enjoy all the early Cannibal Corpse, Slayer, Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, Maiden and Carcass albums...and much more. Looks can be VERY decieving. When I was in my early teens, I DID sport a 1990 Doug Pinnick style 'straightened hair' mohawk. I always dressed in black and wore a Slayer, Megadeth or Metallica T-shirt.

To add a story in the theme of "Wait, you listen to WHAT kind of music?" this happened to me the other day in my apartment complex. I get a slip from UPS that I have a package waiting for me at the leasing office. I go in there and tell the girl I have a package. She goes back to the room and starts digging for it. Leasing Agent: "What is it?" Me: "A CD." LA: "What is it?" Me: "Um...A CD." LA: "No, I mean what kind of CD?" Me: "Music." LA gives me a blank stare. Me (shocked I'm being investigated for my damn package): "It's by a band called King's X. I doubt you're familiar with them." LA: "What kind of music is THAT?" Me: "It's hard rock." LA: "Oh...(pause)...And you can listen to that? Like...regularly?" Me (totally dumbfounded at her blondness despite having dark hair): "Uh-huh." LA: "Oh...ok....well, here you go." I don't really know what I look like I listen to, but apparently it's not metal.
