In case anyone cares and has been waiting for this thing for the last couple of years like me... it' s available for pre-order now at The Laser' s Edge. If you do pre-order it, they promise to have it in your hands on or before release date. Pretty good deal.

The album is simply amazing, much much better than the first one. I love every minute of it.

I have the first one, and unfortunately it bores me to death every time I listen to it. I literally have a hard time staying awake while it' s playing. I doubt I will be buying the 2nd one.

Got my copy of this yesterday. This is an amazing CD. I never really liked the first one, but this one blows me away. Of course having Hackett, Bruford, AND Matheos can' t hurt.

Happened across this thread and wanted some input!!

Don' t even remember when I did it, but I downloaded Muttersprache a while back and the other day, was looking for something to drop in the Winamp player. Listened to it for the first time and.... DAMN, I was blown away! Can;t stop listening to this tune!

Any Gordian Knot fans - how is the rest of that album? Is that from the first one?

                            Any input would be appreciated!
                            Thanks!

Muttersprache is from the 2nd CD. The rest of that album is amazing, although Muttersprache is the heaviest tune of the lot. The first disc is a bit mellower, but also very good IMO.

Vocals? There are no vocals, with the sole exception of a few " aaaahs" during one track on the new album.
And I like it that way! :)

Muttersprache - the main riff is SOOO dream theater, sounds like the end of Scarred. But the songs are very different. Alos hear some Cynic in there (which is to be expected) I can' t wait for this CD to come out.

Strange. Sean Malone has stated only a few milliom times that people expecting a album or even a song in the vein of Cynic will be very dissappointed.

Although I can' t help being reminded of the song Circles by Cynic as well. It' s not on focus, but MP3' s of that song can be found on the net and it' s definitely worth checking out.

Acrually, Circles is not a Cynic song.
It' s a song by Portal, a band formed out of the remains of Cynic.
                                        Here' s the line-up:
                                        Aruna - vocals
                                        Paul Masvidal - guitars, vocals
                                        Jason Gobel - guitars
                                        Sean Reinert - drums
                                        Chris Kringel - bass

There' s no Sean Malone there.
This song was from a demo (the only demo) Portal recorded, it wa snever officially released on CD, too bad, because there' s some really good stuff on there.
I knew a link a while ago, where the full demo was donwloadable, but it' s down now.

Thanks for the info. I really didn' t know that. I just recognised the guitar styles, the vocals and the awesome drumming of Sean Reinert, so I assumed that it was indeed a Cynic song as it said on the site where I found the link.

BTW, not all Cynic material features Sean Malone, you know. Tony Choy used to play with Cynic before Malone joined. I really prefer Malone though. He' s the Jaco Pastorius of death metal. Well not only of death metal, but some of his bass parts on Focus really remind me of some Pastorius parts.

Acrually, Circles is not a Cynic song.
It' s a song by Portal, a band formed out of the remains of Cynic.
                                            Here' s the line-up:
                                            Aruna - vocals
                                            Paul Masvidal - guitars, vocals
                                            Jason Gobel - guitars
                                            Sean Reinert - drums
                                            Chris Kringel - bass

There' s no Sean Malone there.
This song was from a demo (the only demo) Portal recorded, it wa snever officially released on CD, too bad, because there' s some really good stuff on there.
I knew a link a while ago, where the full demo was donwloadable, but it' s down now.

the Portal cd is actually pretty good, if not almost completely different. i really dig Aruna Adam' s voice. on one track (i forget which) she did this really sweet synthesizer solo, almost reminded me of a Kev Mo solo. anyway, i found it on the net. you might be able to find it on WinMX.

and it appears that this is now their official website, which is pretty much the cynical sphere website. the ' Veil of Maya' website was their official site.

oh how much i yearn for a 2nd Cynic album!

Emergent is so good it' s almost scary. I doubt there will be a better album released in 2003.

This album is so amazing it' s scary. So dark and beautiful and so composed. I don' t think there' s a wrong note anywhere while keeping the live setting and energy. A work of art!

I' m still waiting for my import copy of " Emergent" to arrive, but I' ve just read an interesting piece of information from Sean' s site regarding the overall theme of the CD:

                                                    Possible spoilers!

" It' s been interesting to see some of the initial reactions - those who have spun the disc once or twice and posted their reactions as compared to GK I. As usual, the opinions run the gamut, from elation to boredom, but so far it seems the larger compositional structures present within and between the songs have gone unnoticed, but this will take time and repeated listenings. In fact, I don' t have any expectations per se that people will notice them, rather, a curiosity to see to how many levels deep listeners will be able to go in order to find some of the connections. Here' s an easy hint, Arsis and Singing Deep Mountain share some obvious connection, and that connection creates a loop of sorts from beginning to end of the disc. Here' s another: the German word for " Brook" will reveal an important relationship to the motif in " The Brook The Ocean" . Also, if you listen very, very closely, after the third phrase of the opening section, there is something far off in the background (strings) which contributes to this structure as well. And those are just a few of the obvious ones...perhaps in the coming weeks I' ll post some of the constructs (you can find many more hints in the CD artwork, embedded in the subtle layers of the booklet.)"

The German word for Brook is " Bach" , for those who don' t know. Not very surprising, considering that there was a Bach piece on the first Gordian Knot CD.

Also, does anyone know what the bonus track on Cortlandt is? This too sounds like Bach to me , but that guy has written sooo much stuff ...

the album sends shivers down my spine.

I finally got my copy of " Emergent" this afternoon, and have had a chance to spin it once.

Wow. I repeat, wow. I' ve been waiting for this CD for about two years (yes, it' s been that long since the first Quicktime " teaser" trailer was posted on Sean' s site... back when the release date was " Spring 2001" ), and even I wasn' t expecting to be so moved by this piece of art. If I could play/compose/record at 1/10th the level of Sean, I would die a happy and fulfilled man.

                                                              ORIGINAL: Kyo

Also, does anyone know what the bonus track on Cortlandt is? This too sounds like Bach to me , but that guy has written sooo much stuff ...

The Cortland " hidden" track is indeed Back - specifically " Three-Part Invention in D Minor" .

I' d simply like to say that " small" artists (in terms of sheer distribution numbers) are very much deserving of recognition. Support them by purchasing, and not simply downloading (although I now realize you' re in europe, and that many distributors there have pushed back the release date to properly promote it).
