I would love to see a side project featuring Steven Wilson, Mikael Akerfeldt and Mike Portnoy. All they would need is to grab a bass player. Think of the possibilities. Who else would love to see this?

I doubt that if Wilson and Akerfeldt were to work together they would choose MP as a drummer. Didn't SW say he didn't like DT's music very much?

ORIGINAL: drumline I'm not sure if I'd want Wilson and Akerfeldt working together.... Both parties have stated that they're going to do a metal side project together at some point. Its not a question of if, its a question of when. ORIGINAL: Stud Cantrell Who are Wilson and Akerfeldt? Quick, get this man some Porcupine Tree. Steven Wilson's probably the single most talented musician in the business today. How many other people do you know who are in 5 bands (plus some original solo stuff) and they all sound COMPLETELY different. And I'm not talking like MP is in DT, LTE, Transatlantic....those are all rock/metal bands. Porcupine Tree, No-Man, IEM, and Bass Communion all are very very different styles. Only Blackfield sounds kinda like the Tree. ORIGINAL: Flabergastedtony I doubt that if Wilson and Akerfeldt were to work together they would choose MP as a drummer. Didn't SW say he didn't like DT's music very much? SW said he wasn't a fan, but he's definitely freinds with the members of DT. JR even did keyboards on the acoustic blackfield tour earlier this year. SW has said that he likes and respects MP, he just doesn't care for the style of music that DT plays. And MP is certain a fan of SW's, so I don't see the as being completely out of the question (although I don't see it as terribly likely, either).

SW sang the vocals on Shutdown by O.S.I. And Mikael thanked MP and Dream Theater in the Ghost Reveries booklet, so it doesn't seem he doesn't like him.

I'd love to see MP working on a metal project with Akerfeldt for sure, Sean Malone and Mike Patton, even if my dream was MP with Dimebag Darrell (R.I.P.).....

If MP ever does a metal project, I would love it to be something really, really old school. Just balls to the wall thrash/heavy metal.

A Wilson/Akerfeldt/Portnoy would be cool but I read on the Opeth site that Akerfeldt was now excellent friends with the mad genius Devin Townsend : Akerfeldt/Townsend/Wilson/Hoglan with MP on the Cowbell drum solo : now we are talking !!! I would love to hear Devin Townsend's voice produced and recorded by Wilson ! Imagine vocal harmonies with Akerfeldt, Townsend and Wilson : that would be pure bliss !

ORIGINAL: headup13 Portnoy Akerfeldt Malone Gildenlow For one, if Mikael does a metal sideproject of this sort, SW *will* be in it. So give up on the lists that don't have him in it. For another, Gildenlow is completely out of place on that type of project. I can't think of two more polar opposite metal singers than Gildenlow and Mikael. (And for the record, Mikael is far better at it)

This isn't probably the best forum to say this on, but I think The Man looks a little out of place in that trio. Yeah he does a lot more in DT than must drummers out there, but look at the other two guys. Wilson and Ã…kerfeldt are freaks of nature. They are both the complete masterminds in their bands, writing pretty much all the music themselves. MP, being a band drummer, would be sitting in the background making some cool drum parts. I for one would like to see some one-man show freak behind the drumkit. That way, the project would be some sick ego battle between the members. Throw in Gildenlow for that matter too. And maybe some Les Claypool. yep, Wilson/Akerfeldt/Gildenlow/Claypool/some virtuoso drummer

I'm still not sure on the bassist, Claypool is a good start, but definitely keep Gildenlow out of it.

The one that is, arguably, the complete mastermind behind most of the band, writing a good chunk of the music with JP, making all the setlists, producing the albums? Cause if you're talking about a different Mike Portnoy, then your comments make sense. But if you're talking about Mike Portnoy from Dream Theater, well, you're wrong. He's a perfect fit with those two.

When MP worked with Kevin Moore on OSI, he compromised a lot....almost working as a hired gun (and his parts where chopped down, but that's another story). I would think that trio would probably work very well. MP has the old school metal influence, and SW and MO have the current metal influence. EDIT: and yes, PT toured in support of Dream Theater during the 2000 metropolis european leg. don't remember if it was the first or second.

that is definitely good news...the only thing I'm wondering is what it will compare to. I mean you hear the metal in both Opeth and PT..and then Mike brings his creative side to it...let's hope it comes out with an original slant..not sounding highly like PT or Opeth or DT for that matter Kyle

All parties are very creative. I'm sure it'll be original sounding. Take a look at all of SW's sideprojects--They're all very different. MP's projects are all pretty darn different sounding too. And I hope all three are involved in the writing process, cause they're all so good at it. Mikael is especially good at making riffs. And SW will of course have to produce the project. He's the best producer in the music business.

This will rule. If they tour, I will go nuts.....

Information is not knowledge. Knowledge is not wisdom. Wisdom is not truth. Truth is not beauty. Beauty is not love. Love is not music. Music is the best.

ORIGINAL: Portnoy I haven't read through the rest of this thread (I'm at the airport getting ready to leave for Helsinki!) but the title caught my eye as I thought perhaps something had been leaked/announced ... I think leakage might be a good possibility. Maybe this "HomerJ" works on the inside Mike. Be sure that Mikael and Steven are the only ones around next time this topic surges.

As long as they don't record in Ithaca & get pizzas delivered to the studio. (Yes, inside joke). Also, kudos to HomerJ for somehow scooping this. Too bad you didn't have this kind of insight prior to Chicago in 2002.

I apoligize for displaying such a high level of ignorance. But would someone explain to me with details who Mikael and Steven are and why they are so applauded in the forum? ^1000. Sorry, but I too would love to share the joy. I know they are from Porcupine Tree and Opeth but more details on what exactly they do.........please!!!!!!!!

@ Sacrificed Acid: You should probably drop by these sites... http://www.opeth.com http://www.porcupinetree.com Mikael Akerfeldt is the guitarist, vocalist and composer in Opeth, who are a "progressive death metal" (for lack of a better term) band. Same with Steven Wilson on Porcupine Tree (just add "producer" to the list). PT are a prog-rock band more in the vein of Pink Floyd or, to name a more contemporary example, Radiohead.

ORIGINAL: squatch41 Also, kudos to HomerJ for somehow scooping this. FateSpeaks would be the original scooper in the post I brought up to possibly give credence to HomerJ's fervent wish which was unsubstantiated at the time. Credence that kept the topic up until MP saw it and verified stated scooped rumor. Don't bother to thank me though, I do this without expectation...ahem. (brushes something off shoulder)

^^^ Jeebers thanks a lot stratomailer. Sounds amazing already. I wonder how that would work out if they are both guitarists though, and vocalists, I presume no keyboards. Thnx!

Funny that I had to hear about MP responding in this thread on another forum (the VUK forum actually) but I rushed over here to see if it was true and... oh God... I would buy the trash that the studio takes out on the day Portnoy, Wilson and Akerfeldt record in it!!! DO THIS PROJECT NOW!!! (everything is never enough )

ORIGINAL: matcesa I'd love to see MP working on a metal project with Akerfeldt for sure, Sean Malone and Mike Patton, even if my dream was MP with Dimebag Darrell (R.I.P.)..... MP had that dream also, Dimebag (R.I.P.) was the original idea for guitar in LTE but MP/Akerfeldt and wilson will b amazing can't wait ot hear it b/c im a huge fan of DT,PT, and Opeth (as we cna all see by my upcoming concerts lol)

Holy crap, the man himself has confirmed that it will someday happen, now i can't wait. Maybe this will become his next side project after the 8V world tour, unless perhaps he actually decides to take a well deserved vacation. In any case i'll be sure to get it the day it comes out.

When we published the MP interview in which he revealed the plans about the project, it just exploded all over the internet. I've lost count of the numbers of MP-related (and not related) forums, and I'm glad and surprised of the impact it had. Suddenly we got hundreds of mails, all asking about the project. Kind of cool, really...
